I actually feel sorry for Aston Villa fans in a way

I can't actually believe that Gareth Barry has signed for Manchester City. I thought he wanted Champions League football?

Plenty of Aston Villa have come on this blog over the last few months, especially when the race for fourth place hotted up.

There was plenty of banter and plenty of people getting above themselves. Despite the former I actually feel for Villa fans at the moment.

Gareth Barry has lied to them and I have to say I'm surprised that Barry has opted for a move to Eastlands but I shouldn't be.

Most footballers these days only say what they think supporters want to hear when the truth is that they are only interested in lining their pockets.

Barry saying that the reason he has moved to Manchester City because they are a club going places will not wear with Villa fans and it doesn't with me either.

He has gone there for money. That is obvious.

I understand Villa fans being frustrated with him and I don't doubt that he will get a rough reception on his return to Villa Park. He will deserve it too.

Last summer we Gooners had to endure Alexander Hlebs fibs when the real reason he wanted to leave was because he prefered the ice-cream in Spain.

Perhaps if footballers were a little more honest we fans would understand their actions a little more.

If Hleb had come out and admitted his arsehole went because of Eduardo's injury and he wanted out of England because of the situation then I would have been a little more understanding.

Instead he hid behind the ice-cream excuse and that didn't wash with me. Everybody knows that the ice-cream man round my manor does the best 99's in the world.

We will have the same with Adebayor this summer. He will say what we want to hear whilst engineering a move to Beyonce, sorry I mean Milan, at the same time.

I suppose I shouldn't moan and should just accept footballers the way they are. The honesty and loyalty of the old days are gone. Instead replaced by celebrity's earning money by the bucket load.

And I think that is a shame.

Keep it Goonerish..........................

I'm a villa fan and Barry going has made me feek sick. Fair enough if he had gone to you lot or Liverpool but the fact of the matter is he is 28 and wont get champions league with city for at least another 2 years when he will be past his best. Barry you plonker. If he'd stopped at Villa he would have become a legend. Instead, now he is going to be lambasted by Villa fans and Man City will only get another couple of years from him at the top level and he will become a squad player on £90,000 a week.

Good post Wrighty

I was astonished to see that he was getting a medical in Manchester when I woke up this morning (here in the states it was still morning when I learned of this)

So much for Champs League football huh?

As for Ade, he looked so average this year, but still had a decent goal count, but he's so wasteful and anonymous at times, it's frustrating. I just hope he doesn't go to Chealski

well to be honest it is about time that someone challenged the rags and the rest of the big four, and bBarry is only being honest, as Villa cant move forward like City can.

mate im a villa fan and fair play im glad its not just our fans that are thinking wtf has he gone there for and it can only be for the money.

Clear Sleeve said...

Wonder if they'll still give him a testimonial? ;)

I've lost all respect for him, he could have been part of a top team, instead he decided to go for more money. As if he needs more money anyway, he's set for life!!

Money over ambition... it's so sad.

If I were you I'd be feeling sorry for myself. Gareth Barry would have improved your team immensely. As it is, it's Man City who will improve, and if I were an Arsenal fan, I'd be worried about falling out of the top four, losing the Champions League money, and being left with a very expensive stadium I can no longer afford.

As for Gareth Barry going for the money, if this is the case, then Aston Villa should hang their heads in shame. If all it would have took to have kept hold of our longest-serving and best player is doubling his wage, then why didn't we do it?

No, the truth is that Aston Villa will be nothing more than mid-table also rans next season, whereas Man City have every chance of finishing in the top four, and above your lot. The money he's being paid is just a nice bonus.

True i'm a villa fan and just think its wrong what he done i would of preferred if he went to on of the big 4 to play in the champions league but to go to man city and to say he can see them going places its just unbelievable.Man city ain't even in europe next season he's just a money grabber and that the only way man city can get players even robino thought he was going to chelsea till he got off the plane and he was a manchester with sparky there waiting for him he would of not gone to city but he thought he was going to chelsea and he wanted to come to the premier league so bad.and good bye to that mo. ney grabber barry.

Villa fans should be happy in some ways, cash for a player with one year left, a pretty good fee if you ask me.Man City can buy who they like but based on previous buys they have no clue how to build a team, they are a mismatch of fair players with star fees.Money talks but this is a mistake for him, they can spend 200mil this summer and they still won't make top four, i like Villa, they are sensible and improving and them and Everton are the real contenders for taking fourth from us or whoever may be fighting for it, Man City are nothing more than a joke.

Perhaps Liverpool intend upon keeping Alonso and Arsenal weren't interested in his fee or the wages.

In fairness City have a chance to crack the top four whereas Lerner came out and said there will be no major investment in the squad and they intend to become self-sustaining, like Arsenal. However, for Villa to compete they need a dominating center-half, a better backup than Guzan, two top fullbacks a wide midfielder and a striker better than Heskey.

Whereas, City are willing to buy whoever and pay whatever it takes to break into the Champions League. Spending on a top striker, center back and squad midfielder better should put them on their way - but they'll likely need a new manager as well.

Finally, City seem to have effectively doubled his wages. Knowing that he has three or four years in professional football - who can blame him to taking the money. If someone were four years off retirement and a competing firm offered to double their wages, how many would stick around...?

As an Arsenal supporter can't say I'm too bothered. Barry is only really at his best in a 4-3-3 playing in front on a holding player on the left. When paired with another midfielder, he requires a defensive partner - so in short, he is not the ideal partner for Fabregas.

Bring on Senna or bring back Flamini!

appreciate the sympothy Wrighty7.No top 4 teams came in for Barry so he didnt have much choice,he is an excellent player for a club like Villa but he has a massive opinion of himself. When Villa were 4th he was making comments that if we failed to qualify for the CL he would be off,I get the feeling he didnt want us to qualify and he was our captain,no wonder we finished 6th.No matter how talented when a player feels the club should be honored to have them they expose themselves as a bad player.

yeah im a villa fan too, and appreciate this post by wrighty7.
it is a relief to see other clubs and fans as shocked as we are...

i cant beleive hes gone to citeh!

if he had gone to arsenal, liverpool or chelsea (or even to an extreme, everton)

i would understand as they are all in an around champ league places.

i only say everton as they are more likely to ever get champ league football than man city.

city must be the only team in the world who could spend 80 million, have robinho and still end up behind fulham!! and not even in europa!

Great article. I know we villa fans and arsenal fans had our disputes towards the end of the season, but i really do wish you well as you try to play football. Gutted about barry, i hate the media claiming that he's been loyal and so on. The truth is he hasn't. He's tried to get out every opportunity he has had. He wanted to go to pompey, o'neill stopped him. Then liverpool came in. O'neill stopped him. Then finally he gets his move. These are the only three clubs that have shown an interest in him. If he'd have gone to liverpool then fine, he wants champion's league footy. But the fact that he has gone to one of our rivals in the challenge for the top 4 sickens me. We have been lied to, that is a fact. He said he'll only ever leave villa for a champions league club. This shows the lack of loyalty in football nowadays and it sickens me. I'll certainly be booing him at villa park next year. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Anonymous said...

I'm a villa fan and initially i was distraught when he left as he was my idol and he was the best passer of the ball in the villa team...saying that he tried to engineer a move last summer and it failed, since then he hasn't been the same player, a distinct lack of interest was obvious! Villa bought him from Brighton as a 17 year old as part of a deal to take Michael Standing to Villa Park. At the time no one had heard of Barry, not even Villa, and Brighton said if you want Michael Standing you need to take Gareth Barry too, so as we wanted Standing we paid the extra £70k for Barry...since then he progressed as a Villa legend all because of Michael Standing who ironically is now his agent (after early retirement)...So Barry has prospered because of Michael Standing so now as his only client Michael Standing will now prosper from a big money move to Man City. I think Barry thought; "Liverpool or Arsenal won't pay £12m for me now and i might be too old for them in 12 months when i'm free so i'll jump ship for a lot more money and say i'm joining someone ambitious" - As much as i hate Barry right now, i kind of understand him in a way as he is virtually tripling his wages as he knew one of the top four weren't coming for him he might as well move. I just hope then Man City don't fail in first half of the season and suddenly axe Hughes, bring in a new manger with new players to buy in Jan and then Barry is on the bench..It's world cup year and that would knacker him and i think (despite being slightly biased) England are a better player with him in the team...if that does happen, and it is possible at Man City then Barry will rue this day forever...

Fair play on you Gooners for finishing 4th, we had out best chance and blew it, i now only fear for us as it'll more competitive and we've just lost one of better players...come on the villa!!

I fully respect you for writing this article, it's nice to see that friendship is not lost in football.

As for Gareth Barry, I have lost a hell of a lot of respect for him. As the season wore down I was expecting him to move on, and would have fully appreciated his desire to move to the likes of Liverpool, or your club Arsenal.

What I don't understand, and what has really angered me, is that not only did he move to a club with no European football, but felt the need to differentiate between Villa and Man City by saying City are 'going places. As far as i'm concerned he is no longer a Villa legend, and has become a sap who gave into money.

I hope both he and Man City crash and burn next year, and not only will i take joy in having 6 points from them next year, but will also be booing Gareth 'sell-out' Barry every step of the way!

I forgot to mention...i wouldn't have minded him going to a team in Champs League...!!

Santos have confirmed they want to bring Robinho back and have said that if Man City don't attract big name players and give Robinho the chance to fulfill his life long dream of World Player of the Year they will be taking him back...lets hope he leaves City and leaves Barry scratching his head....

what a load of tosh written by some of you villa fans 'oh I wouldnt mind if he had gone to a big four' what kind of ambition is that? No wonder he wanted to leave that is small minded thinking from a small minded club.
Dont hate us at Man City cause we are doing what the big teams have done for years and that is spend spend spend. And Arsenals fans its your place we are coming for your club is falling apart and everyone wants off with a 13million transfer budget I am not surprised.
Face facts people your teams cannot compete with our financial clout - does it hurt are you hurting right now? ;-)

hats off to the arsenal fans who agree. im a life long villa fan (although i have always had a soft spot for the gooners) and the news today shock and left me sick to the bones. barry has always been a god like player to me and this news feels like my wife has just cheated on me and moved away with another man!. i had excepted his move away for champions league footbaall, and wished him all the best with arsenal, liverpool or chelsea but his choice of man shitty and disrespect for villa who made him the player he is today has proved football is loosing its heart to money, and its sad. Barry all the worst to you and hope that you have just made the worst decision of your life! p.s all the best to arsenal in the champions league next year!

Wow, your insight into our club is incredible. I'm sure Wenger is quaking in his boots at the thought of Man City... ;)

These City fans make me laugh. They have spent an incredible amount and gave it all the biggun about finishing in the top four at the beginning of last season, but in the end where did they finish? 10th weren't it? pathetic. Complete joke of a club. Without a proper manager your team will never achieve anything and instead remain the butt of all jokes

He should be cause 13million does not buy a lot and your team of 'babies' as that idiot Evra put it are not cutting it. Your team needs a revamp even a blind man can see that - pathetic gooners go and find a Villa fan to cry on his shoulder boo hoo hoo ;-)

Arsenal are a big club and expect to win things, they have done in the past so they have braggin rights, villa are slowly trying to build a unit to compete with the best, no rush job though we are trying to emulate 'kids of united' but i fear it may not be possible in todays game. Man City however, aren't exactly too big of a club, got some Arab owners who just want success FAST, if they don't get pissed off soon enough with lack of silverware i can assure their high profile players will...when either of them scenarios happen you will be fucked!! You will see various manager go through eastlands in the next 3/4 years i think...high wage bill and an owner who doesn't care about football or Man City...I pray this happens so you gloating Man City fans can do a Leeds and fall down the leagues...

I can wait for european football next season....!!!

Shut your manc mouth Marvin. The facts are that your Arabs would drop City like a shot if they thought there was a chance of buying The Arsenal. Get that into your head son and realise that they are only there for the short term until a BIGGER club like Arsenal comes on the market. Do you seriously think that Arabs of that calibre would be satisfied with your little provincial town of manchester (notice it does not even get a capital letter from me) and not have aspirations of being in control of London's jewel in the crown? Of course they would, and North London is only a few miles away from Belgravia. Your Arabs know that they are at a second rate club and city with no prestige. Imagine how they must feel having to fly up all their contacts from London every two weeks and entertain them in your little toilet of a club and city. It's only a matter of time before your little fantasy is over, Marvin.

Who cares ?? life will go on, good player, served us well, Defour is 8years younger and twice the player, should be signing within the next 14 days. Shame Barry won't be in South Africa next year though, Mark Hughes won't pamper him and pat him on the back every ten minutes like MON, then his head will drop and all the genuine City fans will wonder why they bought him.

What about TH? didn't he lied to us too? then why do we still love him? Arsenal is no smaller club than Barca.

This is football and GB has done nothing wrong. Wait for city in the next 3 years and you'll see them playing CL football.

Billionaire owners have changed the face of football. football is not the same again! its demoralised. Its so weid, the faces of clubs, move becauase to be honest, Money in these times is really a big factor.

The face of Milan is Kaka, and if he can be moved then any1 can be moved. Billionaire clubs have let the prices of players gon e sky high. Now we see that buying the best youth and bringing them through wil lbe the best thing.
IT takes years to master, but now barcelona youth is best in the world, second is arsenal. ITs hard to go in a market nowadyas, cuz as arsenal is interested then 10 other temas go on the chase. So just buy young loan them, and slowly make world class players out of them.

wrighty, interesting post and although i too hate all the bullshit from players, i reckon its the lesser of two evils. if hleb had said why he really left it would have had a detrimental effect on the arsenal. kinda how arsenes comments on his players get annoying but you know he doesnt always mean it; its just for the media and its for the best. adebayor gave an interview where he did actually admit that all footballers were in it for the money, did you catch that one? 99s are shit they dont even cost 99p anymore. its all about twisters

For the fan like us, that's really suck but good luck to Barry. If he wants to play in CL with Man City then he is just wasting his 2 or 4 years over there as they still need time to compete with top 10 clubs.

city have no chance of finishing above arsenal next season. i wouldn't be surprised if they start brightly, but they have no substance as a 'team'.

consider how far ahead arsenal finished over city during a BAD season. try not to forget the previous year we were right up just behind utd and chelski at the end, so if you think arsenal are going down you're mistaken.

we've had rosicky and eduardo out for fucking ages. where would city be if robinho and wright-phillips had been out all season? relegated.

As a villa fan im glad he's gone.

I read an article last night about barry and petrov being in the same team is a bad thing.

both like to attack, which leaves a big gaping hole in midfield where teams run straight through and our defence cant cope.

Petrov is immense and much better than barry i reckon. we've lost nothing tbh.

he was going anyway so why grovel about it?

Lets get in a big central defender, midfielder, another striker and thats our squad done.

what o'neil has allready, he doesnt use. maybe he should start thinking about more than just the same 11 every week. I feel this gives sidwell and Reo coker a chance to shine, even maybe gardner.

At the end of the day even those players arnt enough so we'll have to buy someone new like i said.

Anonymous said...

city will never be a big club. they have no plans. they're just buying players everywhere. we won'see them in the champions league don't worry. it is just an arab with lots of money and wants to get anyone without thinking about a team. u heard that he is buying p'mouth too??

I'm a Villa fan. My verdict is - good luck to him. I'm surprised he's going there and have doubts as to how successful he'll be. But come on - he's stayed at Villa a long time. I don't think he can really be accused of disloyalty at this point. He can do what he wants. Lots of cash. Why not! Good for him. He'll probably do better than Vassell. City have a chance of finishing above Villa, but I wouldn't say it's likely (next season at least).

In general people seem to be taking this all as a chance to have a pop at Villa. I don't think that's really fair. Hopefully we can sign an effective replacement and be right up there again.

The salient point isnt why he went to Citeh. City put in an offer. Why didnt Arsenal?
