Arsene Wenger Could Save Fernando Torres

I know many people reading the headline of this article will probably think that I have gone completely crackers.

Damn, a little part of me even thinks so too.

But there is another part of me, deep down, that truly believes that Fernando Torres would flourish at Arsenal, under Arsene Wenger.

Its true that Torres hasn't exactly set the world alight since his £50m move from Liverpool to Chelsea last January.

Going by his recent standards he probably couldn't set a candle alight.

It could even be said that the Spaniard has flopped in a massive way.

However, I still think that the Chelsea striker is still a top, top class player who is just at the wrong club.

There is a saying that form is temporary and class is permanent.

Well, I would agree it seems that Torres has been out of form since 1843, but he can still show flashes of the form he showed when he first appeared on our shores.

The man may appear past his best but can he really be washed up at the age of 27?

Especially when you take into account that strikers usually peak between the ages of 28-32.

I honestly feel, that if Chelsea are really offering him out for £20m, that he will make a great signing for someone.

Arsene Wenger would be ideal for Torres. He has proved in the past that he can rejuvenate players who appear out-of-sorts.

Not only that, Arsenal's style of football and system is made for someone like the Spaniard.

It's been said that Robin van Persie wants Wenger to make signings of intent and bringing Torres to the home of football would make a big, big statement.

Arsenal need another striker. In fact, we need another striker more than Frank Lampard needs cake.

Being labelled the highest costing flop in football known to mankind must be hurting Torres inside.

He will have a point to prove that he is not finished. He is at a club where the manager, and even his team-mates, seemingly doesn't want him any more. A club where the football doesn't suit him.

Arsenal should make that £20m move. We are geared up to create chances for the strikers.

Torres, and Robin van Persie especially I'm sure, would love it if the Spaniard pulled on the red and white shirt.

Nah, he's shit.

Great idea. He's a class player in a classless team. Its the old square peg in a round hole syndrome. Our fast paced attacks would suit him...

Rightly said W7...I do believe that Torres @ £20M will be a huge steal for us Gunners...He will flourish at the Emirates...Go get him Prof!!!

Torres has played well whenever I have seen him this season. He's in the stage where, as Wenger would say, he "needs a goal."

I'd take him

@ Paul,

Liverpool were hardly laden with class, except perhaps when they had xabi alonso. Torres would quite consistently collect long passes, control them somehow, and then score despite being faced with 2 centre backs. He stopped doing that for liverpool after his injury, and then chelsea bought him and he still can't do it. It's possible wenger could bring him back to some degree, but I don't see any reason for us to spend £20m on him. The price is only so high because of his name, not for the way he's playing.
The way things have gone for him remind me very much of how arshavin has nose dived at arsenal after doing so well for the first few months. Would you pay 20m for arshavin now?

he's been at the top for nearly 10 years now. most atheletes have only 10 years at the top level before declining. nothing to do with age, more to do with general wear and tear of the body.

there are some genetic freaks like giggs and bergkamp who can play at the top well into their 30, but even giggs has modified his game to adjust for his physical decline, and bergkamp's talent was never his physical attributes.

you have to ask yourself whether torres' technical abilities (finishing, positional sense) are good enough in their own right to compensate for the declinei n speed that's a given after all his injures.

I think Dempsey would be better value for money. With Le sulk going and drogba outta contract in may, the chavs want strikers.
As others have said, he's not as good as the EC 2008 with spain.

completely agree wrighty, i'd snap him up in a heartbeat. it's said podolski wants to move abroad aswell, do you feel we have a shot?

TORRES TO ARSENAL GREAT NEWS
MR WENGER GO FOR IT. TORRES IS YOUR ADMIRERE :))
AND YOU CAN TURN HIM INTO WORLD CLASS STRIKER AGAIN

Anonymous said...

Sorry, while Torres was a great striker at Atletico and Liverpool initially, I believe that his injuries have slowed him down and now he is just not up to the demands of playing for a top quality club.

I do not believe that Arsenal can afford to take the risk of getting him for the price that Chelsea would demand.

The story is complete and utter bollocks, anything to sell a paper, and the fella who broke the LIE,never gets a story right anyway..

@Pritpal

I think Podolski is making the right noises.

Whether that is a ploy for a bigger contract or he really wants to come I couldn't say mate

Anonymous said...

Torres, is that you @21.01??

Anonymous said...

oi ur right i think 20:01 comment is torres!!! maybe torres broke this "lie"

Anonymous said...

what if wenger gets torres and podolski? maybe he'll play podolski on the left, torres upfront and robin on the right, or even in the advanced midfeilder role.... it all dreams

Anonymous said...

Brilliant if Torres did join the Gunners but i dbout if we would match his wage demands, he must be on 150k plus per week at Chelski.

Anonymous said...

torres is cuptied by chelsea so not this january cos we need another striker for next february and podolski, damiao, giroud, neymar are the only reasonable choice.

Anonymous said...

Torres is class and would be a great signing. Perfect fit for him and the Gunners.

Anonymous said...

Torres would be a class buy the way we play would suit him

Anonymous said...

super like!!!! but will that be a dream for us aswell??!!

Wenger could save Torres if and only IF wenger's is going to bid for him at that given price 20m..I think wenger may even reduce the price in which Chelsea are not going to agree because they loose in a big way concerning Torres..I pray that wenger should buy torres..¤

Signing Neymar would be HUGE.

i has been a fan of torres for 8 yrs now i know what he can do ,winger is only one to save this innocent soul on a pressure of 50 million pam, while gunners will be the team to rehabilitat him come to me big striker

Ok.......simple question : forget the price, just go on 'merit', list the following 3 in order of your preference : - Benzema, Podolski, Torres ?????

b4 being wooed by fellow spaniard benitez at liverpool, torres had been for long associated with a move to arsenal. but you know how much benitezas prepared to flush for a player(s). i think torres still has got it in him at 27.only probem is chelsea's style which appears slow and winding. torres would suit us with our relentless attcking game. he would surely provide a viabvle alternate to pvp as a goal threat of note.at the moment we lack such cover hence without rvp's goals we would be nowhere near where we are now. plus side too is hi spremiership experiencce. at liverpool where he had onmly gerradr to supply the ball to him he was superb, why not at arsenal where there would even be more assist players -gervino, rvp, walcott?

visionary said...

wrighty, there has 2 be a reason why torres was a failure at pool for his last year there and now at chelsea also. its a NO from me

Sultan Lalani said...

Van Persie was the same.... having problem wid injuries but look at him now... M sure if Torres can play in the Spain National team along the likes of Xavi and iniesta.... he can play the same way at Arsenal... still 20 million for the out of form striker looks a bit steep though.....

Anonymous said...

I think Torres has the right attributes to play and fit in well at Arsenal. At Liverpool under Dalglish and at Chelsea, he has beeen asked to play too close to his own defence. He is a striker and should be left upfield and if he can get back to full fitness, he could recover his goalscoring talent.

This assumes that there is some element of truth in the story....seems very unlikely to me!

Anonymous said...

Arsene Wenger can turn any flop into a superstar!!!

Anonymous said...

I'd rather Podolski as he's in far better form and would easily fit into the Arsenal team, either playing on the left wing (instead of Gervinho or Walcott) or as deputy for Van Persie, but I certainly wouldn't be complaining if we could get Torres for £20m. Still think he could turn the corner and be a top striker again, although I doubt he'll ever reach his previous heights.

Anonymous said...

a part of me wants to see him as a #gunner but is it a gamble worth taking cauz v already have 3 striker of which 2 of dem never seem to score (chammakh n park)n then u have theo n gervinho who really dont help ease the goalscoring burden of RVP(dont get me wrong, they both assist RVP a lot n thats gud but v need aonther outright goal scorer) i hope v get some1 more like benzema or pato or some1 who is a proven player who still performs

Anonymous said...

Yes, you are right. He is a top class striker still. But i have doubt, AW will spend 20M for one player even if he is a best in the world.

Anonymous said...

Striker? Demba ba is the one we need!

Anonymous said...

Torres is on 150K a week at Chelsea! He'd have to take a significant pay cut if he were to play for Arsenal

ExiledGooner said...

Leaving aside the fact that Wenger would never pay that much - 20m, plus agent fees and wages, more like 30m + in the first 12 months - why would we want to sign someone that has basically lost his mojo? Ok, granted Wenger may coax more out of him but that is one huge fecking gamble! And then someone talks about Demba Ba...the same Ba that 2 clubs didnt sign due to him failing a medical. that boy is good, but he is also one knock away from being out long term.

All up for a bit of speculation but reading through various blogs its like someone has had a jizz attack with Football Manager or something!

Anyway, loving your work Wrighty...peace out.

I have think of those before, tot i'm alone. 20mill is to much for us, how about loaning him out..torres in chelsea just like messi in the argentina team, it will not work.
It was a waste that one of that argentina boy chooses inter instead of arsenal, if had he choose arsenal, then it will be a big benefit for his country team.

Anonymous said...

Trust me, Podolski is all we need. We already have Walcott, Gervinho, Ox, Ryo, Arshavin and Benayoun out on the wings. Up front we have RVP and Park(I'm leaving Chamakh out). I'd say we need 3 players for each position and Podolski would fit in nicely. Moreover, Torres can only play that one position, and that position is RVP's and no one else's. Podolski can play anywhere up front.

Bringing torres to arsenal is an amazing idea, not only are we in need of new strikers but also it'll help get robin to extend his contract.20m isn't such an expensive price coz the mans got the class.

Chelsea have a very straight forward way of playing and torres has that extra spark which can't be used at chelsea but can be exploited at arsenal.

Torres should have joined Arsenal instead of Liverpool. From Memory his transfer fee was a mere seven million at the time. Now he`s been priced out of the market through greedy owners.

Anonymous said...

No thanks, £20Mil for an over rated, cup tied has been. Can't see it myself when Wenger can spend £10 Mil on potential. If Torres does turn his game around we'll only get a season maybe two.

He was never that good anyway, just had a lucky year once!

Anonymous said...

Torres used to be one of the very best strikers in the game. And I believe he still is. The lack of confident has hurt his performance badly. But I have been telling my friends for the entire season that Torres should come to Arsenal in January. WE need backup for Gervinho when he is of the the african cup. And I believe that if any team in England can get Torres back in scoring form, it is Arsenal. So go get him Arsene!

Anonymous said...

Im not sure Chelsea would sell him to us. Im not sure we could give him the salary even if they did.
Arsenal to spend 20ml would be really out of their comfort zone even if it was excellent value.
Cant see it happening only if it was a loan till the end of the season.

Anonymous said...

Torres @ circa £20m would be a steel for Arsenal, but you have to wonder if this is just another one of the newspapers fabricated stories and would Chelsea be willing to sell their striker to a rival?

Anonymous said...

Well, torres was a great striker b4 but do u guys rily tink wenger shuld nt sign. Here is what i think:torres won't get 2 arsenal and start scorin immediately,he would stil be tryin hard to get bak 2 hes form. The kind of striker aresal need is one which would easily adapt 2 arsenal's style of play, start 2 score and beliv me torres is not dat striker caus he wil need days, week, months, season or seasons to adapt and remember it is never gud 2 gamble at dis time of d season.Arsene wenger shuld pls get either neymar or damiao not torres

leitrim gooner said...

there are lots of strikers out there i think torres's best days are behind him and the wages his big name would commandc would not be worth while. not sure about podolsky either great for germany but not prolific at club level and at 20m not so sure. what about jelavic at rangers cheaper maby offering us somethig more physical than the other two not cup tied either but benzima is my favoured choice will put away alot of the chances we create

Anonymous said...

Torres declined at Liverpool, failed at the WC with Spain (the best team we've seen for many years) and has lost his place at Chelsea, despite more than adequate support and team-mates around him. it would be nice to think Wenger could succeed where Dalglish, Del Bosque and AVB all failed but i think you might be selling them all a bit short. the obvious conclusion, however unlikely, is that Torres has lost his edge.

Anonymous said...

Cannot see this happening although when he was at Liverpool I thought Torres was just about the best striker in the world.
I do believe that Wenger could work his magic and Torres would be back to his best again, however :-
1) I do not think Chelsea would sell him to their nearest London rival
2) I do not think Wenger would pay £20m even for what could actually be a real bargain

Anonymous said...

I agree with those saying that wenger could rejuvinate the player and that he might fit into our offense well. i also think that at 20m he is still priced above what he would produce. if we have 20m for him why not spend 5-7m more and bring in a REAL star who isn't in need of a pick-me-up. we're in position to make a run at the title and champions league with the sanga, gibbs and wilshire coming back soon and i think a class poacher type is what we need.

the nice thing about van persie's form is that the purchase of another striker would mean we give us the luxury of resting the dutchman for champions league and latter stages of the fa cup. no torres guys let's be realistic and patient and go after a winner.

Fernando Torres is Andriy Shevchenko Mk II... Some players peak early, look how many games he has played in his career and he is only 27. He was kicked black and blue at Liverpool and one injury can change your career, look at Rosicky!! He probably has the knees and ankles of a 35 year old due to the amount of operations footballers have... Lukas Podolski remains the likeliest signing but I think he will go all out to sign Mario Gotze, he knows he's missed the boat with Eden Hazard as he did with Kaka pre Milan and C.Ronaldo pre Man Utd!!

Anonymous said...

Given the risk, he is wortth about £5 - £6 million. At that price, yes, give it a try, but at £20 mil, no way.

Torres would not do well at Arsenal, system would not suit him. Needs an intelligent Bergkamp/Gerrard type playing just behind him feeding him passes through the lines. He'd be awesome at Barcelona, but wasted with a deep lying midfield and with dimwits like Gervinho and Walcott either side of him.

Anonymous said...

Ha ha. You guys are funny.
We are more likely to sign a £5 million pound French or Afrian player.

Zero chance of signing anyone good
