The English Media. Xenophobic or Arsenalphobic?

Let me start by saying I hate divers.

I hate Tom Daley, I hate the entire Chinese Olympic diving team and I hate the biggest diver of them all, Gareth Bale.

There is no question that the S*urs man is the biggest 'cheat' in the Barclays Premier League. Bale has had 4 yellow cards this season for diving alone. That's 3 more cards than I received for my 30th birthday.

However, Bale says he isn't diving, just trying to avoid injury. So that makes his simulation all right then.

Perhaps after the uproar created by Santi Cazorla's dive yesterday, and it was a dive, the Spaniard should use the same excuse.

Now I don't like the fact Cazorla went down like he had been clubbed with an imaginary right-hook from Mike Tyson, but after the way many outsiders (not Gooners) have reacted to it then I think if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Diving does my head in more than a migraine but after seeing the likes of Gareth Bale, Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young get away with it regularly, and nothing hardly being mentioned about it, I think the reaction to Santi diving is a bit over the top.

Many Arsenal fans didn't like it, and rightly criticised little Cazorla for doing his impression of Bambi on ice, however the usual overreaction from the English football media pisses me off.

Over the years I have often wondered whether the media in England are xenophobic or just plain old Arsenalphobic.

When Eduardo 'dived' a few years back against Celtic, in the Champions League, the reaction was astounding. At one point I genuinely feared for Eduardo's life. I thought he was going to be lynched with Alan Brazil at the forefront of the lynching. The lynching bastard.

This reaction was way over the top. More over the top than a Stoke City long ball and I wonder if the media would have acted the same if it was Wayne Rooney, the media darling, who had done the diving.

When Arsene Wenger was interviewed yesterday the interviewer put the debate about Cazorla diving straight to the gaffer. And Wenger, as usual, answered.

However when Wayne Rooney or Ashley Young do their Tom Daley impressions it seems to be brushed under the carpet. I may be wrong here, but I, with my own eyes, have never seen Alex Ferguson questioned about it.

Luis Suarez is vilified for his play-acting. Now don't get me wrong, he annoys me for doing the things he does. But had he been born in Liverpool, had the name Lewis Smith and played for England, would he get slaughtered as he does?

Going back to Gareth Bale, again, he has been booked 4 times for simulation this season. An outrageous amount of yellow cards that if someone had picked up over a period of 5 years they would be branded a serial diver.

Bale has picked 4 yellow cards this season alone for diving yet isn't vilified a quarter as much as Cazorla was yesterday. In fact, on Match of the Day a while back, Bale's diving was laughed off. Seriously I haven't seen as much laughter since I saw Lee Evans live in 2011.

This persecution against overseas players has to stop. It's double standards and hypocrisy to laugh off Bale, Rooney and Young's play acting yet destroy foreign players for doing the same. It's not fair.

As I've said many Arsenal fans were annoyed with Cazorla yesterday. On my twitter time line I only saw a handful of people (myself included) who didn't condone it.

My reasoning, however flawed in my deluded state it was, was say I don't care he dived because I knew what the media reaction would be. After all, Cazorla isn't British, he is a foreign player who plays for Arsenal. The worst kind.

Lets not forget Santi Cazorla, that diving foreign cheat, stayed on his feet against Sp*rs, when fouled, to set up Arsenal's third goal in our recent 5-2 victory over them. I seem to remember Bale diving in the corresponding fixture last season to earn a penalty for them.

Diving is cheating. Easily as cheating as John Terry or Ashley Cole on a night out. But when a British player does it its okay. Don't sweat. But them bloody foreigners....

When Bale dived last week, Hansen branded him as "theatrical". You must realise that Johney foreigner brought diving to England and British players never do it!

What are you talking about? Bale is a foreigner! I don't really get your point, all I'm hearing is whining.

Hi cousins, I'm an Arsenalphobe from N17 and I'd like to point out that everytime our Gareth goes down he gets loads of stick and quite rightly so. Arsenalphobic yes, although we're all warming to you more the worse you get, but xenophobic, no. x

Arsenal have had much worse divers before. Don't act like your club is so innocent.

You obviously haven't bothered to look at the incidents as 3 of the bookings contact was made. Stupid article with no thought going into it. A bit like our transfer policy

It's xenophobia with a Manchester United exception. How many times did Van Nistelroy dive in his Utd career ffs, and yet, despite being around at about the same time, Pires is remembered as the diver of the era, and I think he only dived once, maybe twice.

Bale was vilified by fans and the media over the past fortnight despite it being proven that he was fouled for his two recent cards.

So firstly the media aren't just picking on you and secondly you're happy to believe the lies when they're made against us trying to deflect from the fact you had to cheat to pick up 3 points at home.

This sensationalism won't hide Cazorla from the criticism he deserves and I believe that Wenger is man enough to accept that. Shame about you lot though...

Sounds like you may be suffering with paranoia...
The whole world are out to get me!!!

Im a spurs fan but I do agree. I think the fact that Cazorla won a penalty didnt help. Gareth bale gets caught and booked and it seems justice has been done, which is how it should be. You are right, there should not be any difference. I remember Owen doing it against Argentina in 98 and was almost praised for it so we have no right to attack cazorla or suarez (albeit that i am generalising here). We show bias, which is damaging while we try to fight diving and racism. I dont think it should be up to the media at all to decide, the F.A. could approach all incidents retrospectively and punish these actions. Cazorla nor Bale are bad people, they decorate the league, but lets have something we can be proud of and punish all dives.

The media love Arsenal and cannot get enough stories about how great Wenger is and how Arsenal can win the title every season

PS Bale has been on the receiving end of challenges far worse than Shawcross on Ramsay and if was a blatant penalty in the Arsenal/Tottenham game last season (indeed a red card should have been given to the defender)

You need to be objective

Good article. The media just love using anything to attack us with.

There is definately an anti-foreigner bias at play here. How many times have we seen Rooney and Gerrard dive over the year only to be told by english pundits how english players are not just copying the (dirty) foreigners and its now just part of the game?

The last 2 bookings for Bale were proven to actually been fouls
Where as Corzola was a blatant dive in the box to con a very weak referee
The man has the best seat in the I tire stadium and with the decisions like that it makes you wonder what he is actually seeing
There is no getting away from it Arsenal are rubbish and need to cheat and to get a result at home against an average side
I would be more worried about that, because stronger refs won't be fooled by such blatant conning
But want do you expect from a club like Arsenal when there i tire exsisance is based on cheating and backhanders

Three of Bale's bookings were for incidents where the ref thought he had 'dived' as he went down 'theatrically', while running at pace, but shown to have actually been fouls.
Spurs fans don't like his theatricality.

Whereas your little Santi went down from virtually a standing position when NO contact was made. Oxlade-Chamberlain should have been penalised for a foul before your second, and Mertesecker handled the ball in the area. So you shouldn't have got either of the penalties you shouldn't have got either of the penalties you did get, you got off with a penalty you should have conceded, and Bale has been booked for being fouled - what is it you are whinging about, again, exactly?

Muggy article, from a muggy fan of a muggy team!

This isn't a personal attack on Bale.

Although I admit I've used him a lot as an example.

Mainly because he is British and NOT from overseas.

I dare say had he come from Spain then he would be getting a lot more stick then he does.

Absolute load of sh*te.

Typical bleating gooner,Millwall have taken the `noone likes us` chant, face it, noone does, now youre in a mid table scrap with the bin dippers its all bad.

When you played the far more attractive Spurs, and Ade got sent off, who was it rolling around on the ground, clutching his face(not the affected leg)....erm...Carzola??

Bale , unfortunately, although superb, does seem to be heading down the Ronaldo route, and I hope he gets it out of his system.

Arsenal need to accept, they arent what they were.
