It should have been Xabi Alonso not Ryan Giggs

Is Ryan Giggs winning the PFA Footballer of the Year a sick joke?!

The geezer has started twelve, yes twelve, Premiership games this season! How does that merit such an award?

Giggs has been superb over the years but I get the sneaky suspicion that he was only crowned PFA Footballer of the Year because it has eluded him in the past and he is in the twilight of his career.

I applaud his loyalty to Manchester United. Not many players stay at one club their whole career. Surely though he should be awarded for this at the end of his playing days and not given Footballer of the Year as a token gesture. Doesn't this take the shine off the award a little?

The winner should have been Xabi Alonso. Regular readers of this blog will now how much I rate the fella. He is absolute class and has played out of his skin this season.

Somehow even being named in the Premiership team of the year has eluded Alonso too. How?? Maybe I see a different game to others.

Its a shame that Arsenal have no players involved but I expect next season to be different. In fact I reckon that a certain Russian maybe right involved.

And I aint talking about Pavlyuchenko either pal!

Keep it Goonerish.................

thats the whole thing about this season - no one has stood out. It has been very average. I would have given it to Vidic or Ferdinand.

Everyone goes on about how great the premiership is but just look at the players that is has lost over the last few years...ie. Bergkamp, Henry, Zola, pires, etc...its seems to be all pace and physical now. Gazza was right when he said its sad to see all the skill being drummed out of kids.

Alonso hasn't been that outstanding so for you to come out with yet another stupid post about him winning player of the year comes as no surprise.

Keep trying.

It's all a popularity contest, and Xabi Alonso is pretty much a bellend, so the entire premiership hate him, so there was never a chance of him getting enough votes to even be nominated!

I reckon it should have been gerrard just ahead of alonso if liverpool were to win the league, and Ferdinand just ahead of Vidic and Rooney is Utd were to win the league.

Really don't get the voting so early, how long does it take to count votes?!

Must have seen the majority of the scousers games this season and pretty much every time Alonso's been outstanding.

Torres and Gerrard get the majority of praise but he's been their most consistent player this season.

Can't really understand why so many Arsenal supporters don't like him. With Barry still being linked to Liverpool I'd love it if we made another move for him. He's a proper Arsenal player and there's no one in the prem with a range of passing as good as him (including Cesc who has a better eye for the killer balls)

Joppa, your comments are beginning to bug me mate. Leave it out.

Giggs win is a joke. Walcott's started more games than Giggs and he's been injured most of the season! Have to disagree with alonso though, Gerrard has been the sole reason for Liverpool's title push.

Alonso has been so consistent and so reliable, that's the most admirable thing. But the way he can completely control a game (except against both Arsenal games)will never be recognized. I really like watching him work.

If the voting was done mid-february then I'm really surprised van Persie is not ahead of Torres in the forward role. Torres had barely played upon till that point.

It should been your bollocks chopped off at birth wrighty not ryan giggs

Joppa sounds like a deeply jealous little twat. Why doesn't he just sod off to another site, the mug!

Joppa Road said...

lol...deeply jealous...haha..not that just cannot believe how dumb, passionless (just have to visit the Emirates to see) Arsenal fans have become in general and I don't give credit to people who call Ian Wright a cunt when he is one of out greatest.

I am not a Wrighty7 sicophant (spelling). If he write a good piece I will praise it, if not I will put another point of view across. Don't like it then moderate.

I hear what you're saying but isn't this the players own award? That is, didn't Ryan's fellow pros vote him this one?

Clearly the majority of them think he's suitable. Also clearly, it's more of a "lifetime achievement" kinda thing this time around. Fact is, who else would you vote for? I think Alonso has been good but not award winning.

The PFA awards just lose all credibility with their choice of Giggs. It doesn't put the players in a good light - as we always thought they're a bit thick.

compared to torres rvp is a 1 footed joke

Passionless arsenal fans???? Anyone who was at anfield for the Liverpool match would tell you otherwise, we stood for the whole match even after it was announced for all arsenal fans to please sit, like 3 times!!! We stood And cheered for the whole match, a he'll of a lot more than the home fans

Giggs won the award only because the media made the most noise about him. Actually not sure but I think Fergie mentioned his name as a PFA candidate a long time before the nominations even came out. The award is given more as an apologetic one. For me no one player has really stood out and the major flaw of this award is that the voting is done way before the season ends. This needs to be changed.

UYS, WHY WAS NASRI NOT NOMINATED FOR YOUNG PLAYER???????????????????????????????????????

AGBONLAHOR LENNON EVANS RAFAEL IS THAT A JOKE?

NASRI HAS PLAYED BRILLIANT SCORED GOALS AND GOT ASSISTS FOR A TEAM FIGHTING FOR 3RD PLACE.

Completely agreed re Giggs, quality player, model professional but what the fook has he done this season. This does take the shine off the PFA award , even as a Liverpool fan i would have no problem seeing Giggs get a separate award honoring his achievements throughout his career but winning the player of the season award this year must even ring a bit hollow with Giggs himself. Complete token. Why not give it to Scholes next year even if he were to hang up his boots in the summer.

And lets be honest here the fact that united had 5 players in the PFA award lineup again is a bit bizarre. United are top of the league so it is right that they are adequately represented but how the likes of Lampard, Alonso etc fail to make nominations suggest that the PFA certainly have their favourites!

I would also just like to say I can really see Arsenal being a big threat next season, if they can go out and bring in one or two top signings, ie a quality centre half.

away fans tend to be the true fans...they are excused.

Sick of all the media bias towards Man U. Football is becoming a joke. The refs are clearly bias towards the bigger clubs.

How many times this season when Man U have been losing or playing bad has the ref come along to help them? Blackburn away, Spurs etc This is deciding titles. All that crap about evening out.

And look at the last few weeks with Arsenal. Clear handball by numb nut Bendtner and doing his best to get the first goal chalked off. Yet the ref gives no pen. The other week v Wigan, a clear sending off when 1-0 down yet we get away with it.

I strongly agree with you .. as a Liverpool fan I thought Xabi Alonso was our player of the year .. I'm afraid that everything Sir Alex Ferguson command , the FA can't refuse it .. thanks for your honesty

It really is very simple -

the award is voted for by the players

xabi alonso has had a brilliant season, but is a dick, and the majority of premiership players dislike him, so would never ever vote for him.

Anonymous said...

yes, it is simple, the votes go in in January, so it means Jack! its clear to see Gerrard should have probably got the award, but as the votes go in in Jan, as if the season finishes in Jan, what a farce! anyway, congrats to giggs for the sentimental trophy, i bet he even feels a wee bit embarassed for receiving it. not his fault.

Xabi alonso?
Sure hes been good but i duno.
Over the season Torres has been by far the most impressive player for me, when hes actually played.
I duno, given their defensive record, I would have thought giving it to vidic would have been reasonable. Even tho hes made sme mistakes since.
Gerrard and Lampard have both been superb IMO, gerrard more so recently (and it pains me to say it cos I really never rated them!)
Overall tho, nobody has really stood out, apart from torres over the season.
Giggs getting it is just sentimental garbage. Hes been average for most of the season. Great pro, had a great career, but it makes a mockery of the award really.

fellaini should have won young player hands down
first year in the prem, played a lot of games, scored quite a few goals, been a real handful.
AND hes actually young enough to be considered a "young player", unlike ashley young (almost 24!)

Anonymous said...

nah - ireland was head and shoulders above the rest and should've walked young player, though fellaini should have been nominated, along with nasri and denilson

IrishGooner, your legs must be killing you to stand up for a "whole 90 minutes". The Kop do that every game. Liverpool fans away from home never sit down.

When I see Arsenal fans on their feet at the Emirates all game, I might actually take your post with a bit of credit.

Just because you stood up for a while in a 4-4 draw in what most people say one of the best atmospheres in world football doesn't make you somehow a demi-god.

Wrighty7 said...

Joppa, I have no problem with you leaving comments mate its just the little digs you have that annoys me.

I think my Uncle Aubrey who plays for Clapham Common Rangers FC should have been nominated. After all, he'll come closer to winning the league this season than any Arsenal player.

"The Kop do that every game. Liverpool fans away from home never sit down."

You'd think Liverpool fans would behave better at away grounds, considering the lessons of the past. But they obviously prefer to flout the regulations which were insigated for for safety.

the media stinks of man u bias so its bound to effect the players...good one joppa even i think the referee have given way too many decisions in our favour..thanks to which we beat liverpool in cl last season..oh wait

ryan giggs..?! lol wtf

joppa you're a twit. If you actually bothered to watch liverpool play before passing judgement on alonso, you wouldnt be saying that. I wouldnt say alonso is my choice for player of the year, but he certainly deserves it more based on his performances this season which atleast merit a place in the PFA team. Nicolas Anelka??? You've gotta be kidding!! The pfa team formation is too rigid. Wrighty, even as an Arsenal fan, I cant begrudge ryan giggs this award. Its just so late that it actually takes the shine off it for him cos it looks like a token more than an award right now.

I wonder what the odds are for arshavin to win pfa poty next season.

Adebayor should have got player of the year for conning all us gooners, the manager and everyone else,by tripling his wages and then doing SFA for most of this season :)kelsey

Good post this Wrighty, Ryan Giggs only got that award as he is coming to the end of his career... Which some people may think is fair enough.... But its just another point that proves the FA and are so far up Uniteds arse they couldnt lick a fanny if it was put in front of them...
