Are Things Really That Bad?

Oh the despair! The agony! The torture!

On a serious level are things really that bad?

Blimey the way some people are going on I'd have thought that the world was just about to end.

Of course yesterday was frustrating and disappointing but take a reality check!

We have just lost to the champions, worthy champions at that, on their home turf. No disgrace for anyone.

In fact, I'm proud of the way the boys played and proud of the fact that Chelsea, the champions, completely changed their usual pattern of play just to deal with us.

How often do you see Chelsea put ten men behind the ball, for the most part of 90 minutes, at home? I guarantee you will not see them play like that at home again this season.

At the end of the day, in my opinion, Arsenal are the better side. Yes, I said it, better than Chelsea. BUT, and there is a but, Chelsea are miles ahead of us tactically.

Obviously Arsene Wenger needs to learn how to beat Chelsea again, he used to be able to, but I really think a big factor in the defeat was the choice of players available.

Don't get me wrong, I hate to use injured players as an excuse, but we lacked a cutting edge and I have no doubt that had Cesc, RVP and Walcott been available we would have won yesterday.

The game was made for van Persie and especially Cesc Fabregas. A game where you have so much possession needs a cutting edge. Those two would definitely have provided that.

Things aren't as bad as they might seem and Arsenal are certainly not as bad as people are suggesting!

The title isn't decided in October. True, we aren't in the position we'd like to be but I'm sure we will still compete for the championship.

Look at it this way, things could be worse. We could be in Liverpool's position.

Keep it Goonerish......

I agree things aren't that bad but I guarantee you we will be miles off winning the title which is tediously depressing!! Suddenly I live for the CARLING CUP!!

Sad reality check really

Wrighty, where have you been, so nice to read something about Arsenal that I agree with. We were far better than Chelsea for long periods, if we play like that when they come to the Emirates we will win, of that I am certain. The size of RVP would have made a difference yesterday, I thought Diaby was excellent although you would have thought that he lost us the game if you listen to the media. Fabregas was a big miss along with the Vermaelen. Keep up the good work, I only wish more bloggers were like you. I enjoyed that game as much as I can enjoy watching Arsenal lose!!

Anonymous 21:45.....not miles off really....I suggest you turn off the negative commentry and watch rather than accepting the poor judgement of the poorly scripted commentators.

Thanks mate.

I hope to be back more regularly now!

I've been well off the pace lately!

its not so much just yesterdays defeat as 1 point in 3 games. the sunderland draw almost felt the worst of the three games though WBA was poor.

I agree that we miss RVPs cutting edge in games like yesterday but I am worried for him with all these injuries. I just hope he proves me wrong.

we are not that bad obviously but just no where near good enough to win the league or europe. people are depressed because NOTHING has changed from last year or the year before etc and sadly we all realize that it isn't going to change any time soon. we are competing with spurs more than we are chelsea, that is a fact and is utterly depressing.

dan said...

realistically we have issues all over the pitch, the goalies, the whole defence, lack of cover or to take over from song who is playing terribly, the lack of width and poor crossing for chamakh, the 4 3 3 doesn't suit our players, too many of them are too average, too lazy and too overpaid. we are just about a top four team and nothing more. peoples resignation to chelsea's superiority to us just sums it all up. the mighty arsenal have truly fallen.

Glad to see Arsenes mum is still well enough to do her blog, your a fucking embarrasment mate

yea things are looking up BIGTIME we got a professor as manager who relieves us of a reported £6 million a year for constant failure the french mafia taking up residence at london colony and not an earthly hope of a trophy coming anywhere near n5, unless of course it ends up at spurs
there is a reason why wenger was plying his trade in the j league, its because he is a shit coach who signs useless players, squalli@@@@ included

Bossed the game, but didn't happen

Drogba's heralded for the goal but that ball couldve gone anywhere. 2nd goal - same thing. great goal but his next 10 shots like that will hit row z

Wilshere man of the match

Nik says,

Wrighty, things might not be that bad, but when you cant put the ball into the net after 18 attempts you have to question the ability of some players and their finishing abilities. Its one thing to have 55% posession every game, but another thing to actually make it count.

It just seems every year we fail against our biggest rivals. Is it coz our players are terrified of Drogba, Rooney etc? Maybe some players need to have a seat on the bench for a while (Arshavin,) or worse still, frog marched out of the Emiates.

So much was made of Chamakh when he signed for us. Maybe he's not getting the service he needs or our style of play doesnt suit him.
What about Vela? Why not give the fella a chance in a 442 formation with Chamakh and see if that combo bears fruit for us. I dont mean trialling it against Chavs or Man U, but it just looks like Wenger plays this 1 style and if it doesnt pan out the way we want it to, he's stumped for ideas and cant change our style on the run.

Our defence seemed to be unlocked too easily as well. Maybe its time to play a 4-1-3-2 against the bigger teams we tend to lose to and leave Song very deep in defence.

Questions must be asked of our players, coaches and manager. Something has to be done, and done fast.
Oh, and come on guys, theres no need to get nasty personal with each other. Afterall, we do support the same team and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

GUNNERS TIL I DIE!!!

Do you get paid to write this drivel you sad paid up AKB.

None so blind as those that shall not see.
Do you 'write' such shite just to get a reaction.

Yeah, we know things are not that bad......if we do not wish to win the title. 1 point from 9 is not good enough if you want to win the title. Realistically, our best hope is in the cups...if we are lucky to avoid chelsea and a place in europa league. I am also worried about the Walcott/RVP injuries. They are of no use to us if they are always on the 'sick'. Makes me remember 'sick note' darren Anderson of 'Spuds'

@ 22:31 comedy is my chosen subject
now do you think wenger would be good enough to coach FR TEDS over 80ies priests to victory so as TED would not have to kick bishop Brennan up the arse
maybe he could sign cygan for that game, he would not look so slow among them

Anonymous said...

to be honest mate they are pretty grim at the moment... for a few years there wasn't a ground we could go to, or team that we could play against that i didn't think we were capable of beating whereas now, we need teams like chelsea to have an off day, for us to have our first choice 11 available and to have a stormer for us to be in with a shout of winning... Honestly wrighty did you really believe that we were gona take anything from stamford bridge before the game? i know i didn't, it was more hope than expectation, and has been for some time, 1 win in something like 16 against chelsea for me in unacceptable... You can't create a culture of success at a club like ours, and then bitch and moan when the fans are unhappy that's the trophies and success dry up... Oh and as far as saying it could be worse look at liverpool, to be honest i couldnt give a rats ass bout the pool, its mildly amusing, but in the entire time wenger has been at arsenal, we've never bought beyond our means, so to assume paying more than market value for some world class players to replace some of the average players we have at the club, will leave us in a posistion like liverpool, leeds portsmouth is ludacris... especially as the teams that are struggling finacially at the moment are doing so because of the people who bought the clubs not have enough cash to sustain it, and having to continually rely on extensions to loans taken out against the club... neither of which is any danger of happening at arsenal...
Just seems like we are no longer a contender, but an also ran, a team that threatens to win trophies and achieve success but for various reasons invariably fails when crunch time comes...
For once im glad there's an interlull, gives our players and managers some time to regroup

I applaud you for speaking out on these premature fans. Chelsea where rattled and it only due to our luck we lost. Imagine these is in fact second strings team yet we gave them scare right up to Alex free kick. I am so proud that at last something magic is happening with the Kids.

Some players are not up to the plate but we should be proud of Wiltshere, Jet and Fabianski. While Diaby, Song should really take a real good look on themselves for exposing us to much. People may blame Nasri but believe those two players are a big let down and we need to sort it out sooner.

In all it first time we played Chelsea despite losing that I was not deflated at all but proud. I have got tired of Le Grove, Arseblog whinnings and despite being critical of Wenger I doubt I could even manage a five a side team let alone Arsenal. I hope most of these fans move to other clubs, they simply are not worth it. There millions of Arsenal fans all over the World who see hope against greed that has affected football to such extent.
When we do win it sweet cause it like watching real footbal not manufactured or negative like Mourinho or Even Manchester United. Winning in Style or with dignity like Spain in the World cup is far better. Let hope we win something cause we losing ground completely with Citeh now on horizon. Few players should be bought to cover holes in the Field.

Well said Wrighty. It wasn't, a perfect performance but it was a pretty good one and on another day Drog,s back heel would,ve gone wide, Kozzer would not have missed the open goal and Cham,s header would,ve been the winner.
Yet the sense of doom emanating from some comments is staggering. I hope our players don, tbread some of the blog sites out there, because afterbworking so hard and playing so well, to then read the crap that some people spout... Well, they must just think they are utterly c
Lueless about football.

Sure, things aren't really that bad considering Arsenal is a club fighting for a CL spot year after year, on a shoestring budget, with a forever young and potential team playing good football.

However, it's a damnation if we consider Arsenal as being one on the richest club in the world, with one of largest fan base in the world, charging the most expensive season ticket prices in the world. It's a damnation for such a club to be forever in a second tier, with no ambitions to go beyond the CL spot, with no hope of beating any top teams.

A consolation point is, we are in a better shape than Liverpool. As to ambitions, at least Spurs are trying their best and we should give them credit for that. Really, I don't know what our best means.

You are either completely blind or insane, I just cannot work out which. We are a better Team but they are better tactically??? Get you're head out of the sand (or Wengers backside!!!) They are streets ahead of us as always, and as soon as you and other akb's realise this and stop with this dilusion that Wenger is all knowing and that our side is constantly showing that it does not have the quality IN DEPTH that Chelsea, Utd have and that City and dare I say it Sp*rs have been building since Redknapp took over. With this blindness to the truth nothing will change until one day you will wake up to reality that we aren't really good enough to win a top honour with Wengers policy as it is (with the boards backing). How can you honestly say "I'm proud of the way the boys played" my god man we LOST and apart from the first 5mins and a missed Chamakh header in the 2nd half Chelsea just played us! We pass pass pass until the move breaks down and they hit us on the break, the same thing that they do every time we play them..... Wenger on the other hand has the team play the same way every time and fails (2 wins from 17 attempts now and 6 defeats in a row...our worst ever run against Chelsea in 100 years! Sure Wenger is setting records alright!

How many times did we see this happen ?!

Wenger says it's not deja vu , i say it was ! i clearly remember our match against them last year @ the bridge , with Arshavin as our lone striker , couple of golden chances in the first 10 mins or so , all wasted , then boom ! , a cross from CASHLEY and Drogba just finishes it the exact same way , with a backheel.

Wenger needs to change the way he thinks , you can't keep losing and then come out and say " today we have proved that you can play well and lose " ?!?!?!, i mean pal , that's not what the fans want to hear , fans who have been waiting for a trophy for freaking five years now !!!

I'm truly convinced now that Wenger's training tactics are not that good anymore, why you ask?
I'll tell you that from 22 cross during the game , 4 ONLY 4 of them were good , that's statistically proven. I mean football isn't only about running and running and passing 150 passes to score @ the end , i admit it , i LOVE the way arsenal play , but i also hate how we can't control games anymore , we play against Sunderland or West Brom. to have them dominate the midfield ?! If we ARSENAL can't control the tempo of the game , then who are we?!

I just hate the fact that this team would get really bashed if they played against the old arsenal !

The fact that we've been building a team for the last 7-6 years , only to have the same things happening over and over again every season is just depressing !

urghhh the pain, it just sucks , tough luck gooners

I agree that we were not very bad, but I also differ with you a little bit.
1) The missing players' excuse is very valid this time around because we were playing the best team in the league. So we needed our best line-up to beat them.
2) Wenger had his tactics right (given the choice of players he had). Before the game I was calling for two holding midfielders (Song AND Denilson) to combat the great Chelsea midfield, but to my surprise our formation worked very well against Chelsea.
3) The goals came from two outstanding individual displays by Drogba and Alex. Add to that two errors by our players.
4) We don't play teams of this quality more that 4-6 times a season.
So I think that we are in a good position if we get Fabregas and Vermaelen (for another 25 games each), RVP (15 or 20 max. if we're lucky) Walcott and Bendtner (20 each). With a moderately healthy squad we should get 1st or 2nd in a major competition this season.
I chose to beleive.

The past couple of seasaons I have been furious at some of the inept displays we have given when losing to Chelsea, Man Utd etc.
On Sunday I was quite proud of the lads and just felt extremely sad at the result which did not represent a fair return on their gallant efforts.
I know it is history now, but if Van Persie, Fabregas and Vermaelen had been playing, then we would have won this match and we and the media would all be singing a very different song right now.

The concern for me is as follows, I think Wenger is a good man manager and has a great eye for attacking talent; however, he is a weak tactician. When he became the manager of Arsenal he "revolutionised the game" and we reaped the benefits of applying his new management methods on a team that had been relentlessly drilled on the tactically aspect of football by "1-0 to the Arsenal" George Graham. We were so ahead of the competition that his tactical skills were not exposed until this core of players left the club. Sadly, other teams have caught up and are now exposing our tactical weaknesses. I beleive we need a defensive coach that complements Wenger's attacking instincts and a couple of experienced players (who understand tactics) to strengthen the spin. Sadly, I hear a lot of Arsenal supporters say the same thing and I don't beleive the wisdom of the crowd is wrong. Wenger, being Wenger, unfortunately will not change his mind. In some respects Wenger's career to-date reminds me of Napoleon Bonaparte (who achieved greatness and then failed gloriously because he would not adapt or change). I beleive Arsenal do not need a benevolent dictator any more and things need to change. I'm not advocating revolution, what I want is evolution. I just hope that the price of change is not Wenger's head because despite his faults I still beleive he can deliver the sustainable success we all crave.

I find it ironic that the negative parts of the Arsenal blogosphere think that those who try to be positive and actually support Arsenal Football Club, are actually killing the club by not recognising the fact that we're "shit".
They seem to think that if all supporters moan and stamp their feet, then we will suddenly start spending vast amounts of money and start winning the league every year. The juvenile idiocy of this idea is laughable in the extreme.
Grow some balls. Support your team through thick and thin. Man up.

Anonymous said...

Not far behind but well behind when it comes to winning the league.Fans are angry at the bullshit that comes from Wenger about this team being good enough,1pt out of 9 tells its own story. No disgrace to lose to Chelsea but no team with ambitions of winning the title loses at home to WBA.When i see Fabianski,Clichy Song and Diaby in our starting line up my heart sinks. We need a keeper a DM and a back up striker because Vela is just a joke and Chamakh is being run into the ground

Anonymous said...

There was a stat in the second half which said we had 62% of possesion.Who cares. We could have had 90% possesion.Chelsea were tactically better than us.And that is Wengers biggest failing. We play the same way v Chelsea as we do against Blackpool. Its going to be 7 years since we finished above Chelsea and that will continue unless Wenger gets a team together who dont fall apart against the big teams

Anonymous said...

No no no, things aren't that bad. We're a fodder club and let's accept that fact. We can't afford to buy any players above the bargain prices and let's accept that fact. We won't win a thing in the next 5 years and let's accept that fact. The best we can hold onto Cesc Fabregas is this season. So what? It's an illusion if not derangement to think or even hope that we are a title contender. We have to accept that no matter how bitter it is. And please don't forget to fork out the monies to pay for the most expensive season tickets in Europe. So what? It's our club we have to support until we die.

Jazbo here,

Wrighty, I've said it before and I'll say it again, we have some of the worst so called "supporters" in the entire league.
Where were these stupid tossers before Arsene Wenger arrived at Arsenal, do they remember the previous dross from years gone by?
when Arsenal were no more than a midtable team of limited ambition and support.
I just wish they would piss off and support Chelski and the Spuds.

The game against Chelsea was was a watershed for me it proves that we are going in the right direction and that we don't have to fear anyone, don't these muppets understand what just happened???
we bossed money bags Chelsea in there own back yard, made them play with ten men behind the ball, they won because of two freak goals!!!!!!!!!!!
and we were missing the whole spine of our team!!
Could any other team in Europe have done that to Chelsea, I rest my case.

Anonymous said...

And we lost again. Who's the Muppet?

jazbo time you booked yourself in for a bit of rehab again, good man there u go, you should be out by xmas

i have been an arsenal fan for about 2 1/2 years now i and i get most of my viewing pleasure purely from the style and manner that arsenal play their football in. If we win or lose against the man u's and chelski's, i don't look to deep into the result. Arsenal still is always looking to pass the ball around and play football in a skilled and technical manner rather than resorting to long balls and such. Gooners!

all the people that don't want to support the club because of not "winning silverware" whatever the heck that means should be ashamed. When we play partisan during the midweek their fans were singing when partisan was down, until the end of the match. this type of fandom seems non-existent for many arsenal fans that i find online.
