Mikel Arteta, The Biggest Panic Buy Since Petrol

I hope everyone out there who described Mikel Arteta as a panic buy will stand up and apologise profusely until Tottenham Hotspur one day win the league. In other words, you'll be saying sorry for a long time. Maybe forever. And ever.

That man is a complete class act and the fact that he was even acknowledged by some as purchase of panic not only insults him but it insults me too. And my family. Even my cat was pissed right off.

I would describe the hysteria, amongst some, when Arteta signed for the club as bad as when people were rushing out buying petrol in a state of panic last week.

The truth is Mikel is an unbelievably talented footballer who constantly lives in the shadow of Cesc Fabregas and that is not fair on him. Especially when a lot of people seemingly didn't want to give him a chance to prove otherwise.

It makes laugh more than seeing Harry Redknapp having a twitching episode when I read or see that Arteta is no Cesc Fabregas. Of course he isn't. And he wasn't bought to replace Cesc either. Arteta is Arteta and I am grateful for what he has brought to Arsenal.

And I am not basing this assessment just on Arteta's performance yesterday. He ran the show by the way. I have always believed that he would be a fantastic acquisition for Arsenal and even wet myself a little when he signed in the most dramatic of circumstances.

He has been immense for us all season long and it is evident that he brings the best out of the players around him. Especially Alex Song. His calming influence, and simple yet effective style of football, is a joy to watch at times.

Unfortunately Jack Wilshere hasn't had the opportunity to play alongside Mikel, due to his injury that seems to have ruled him out since the Dinosaurs ran amok on the Earth, but when that day comes we Gooners have a lot to look forward too.

Is it a credit to the strength of the Spanish national team that Mikel Arteta doesn't really get a look in. The Spaniard would get into most international sides but the fact is, unfortunately for him, he plays in an era where this Spain team, despite a lot of them being mugs, is full of world-class midfield players.

That's not to say that Arteta can't force his way into that Spanish squad at least. And I doubt he would turn into a mug if he did. His game has improved even more since joining Arsenal and he seems to be getting better with age. Like a fine wine. Or Jennifer Aniston.

How he was ever associated with being a panic buy was beyond me. Perhaps if he had cost Arsenal £20m instead of £10m then the words would never have been linked with his name.

The fact that he was bought on dead-line day may be a factor I suppose. But that is the only logical explanation I can think of. However I didn't see Robinho described as a panic buy. He cost £32.5m though didn't he?

Arsene Wenger has bought a player, with plenty of Premier league experience, to the club and has been proved right again. Of course, he gets many wrong, but Mikel Arteta is one of the signings that even the doubters must now admit they were wrong about.

One thing for certain, in my eyes, is that Mikel Arteta is no panic buy. I'm gutted in a way that he didn't sign a couple of years ago. But he has always been on Arsene's radar and we had been linked with him for years until he actually signed for us.

Whatever the case I'm glad he is a Arsenal player. I always felt he was an Arsenal player wearing the wrong shirt and now he proving all those who didn't believe in him wrong. But do they admit that?

He was a panic buy. Just because he scored a few goals and is a good player doesn't mean he wasn't. You're thick.

Arteta is one of the key few premier league players who can change a game in seconds. not only does he score crucial goals he wins mid-field battles and passes well.long live Arteta, long live Arsenal.better than Torres

Cesc said...

We, as fans, are the thick ones in truth.

We all assumed he was a direct Cesc replacement. In fact, Arteta has replaced the 'Denilson' position in the midfield 3, the deep lying continuity player. The role that Wilshere played last season.

Ramsey and now Rosicky have played in the slightly more advanced Cesc position. I would expect Wilshere to challange there when fit also.

Arteta has been our Xabi Alonso.

haha. @ 'Anonymous' @ 12:08. Pot-kettle-black. You wrote 'you're thick' to the blogger and then corrected yourself with the wrong spelling of 'your!' Moron!

Secondly Arteta was NOT a panic buy. An excellent, established premiership player who we have been linked with for 2 seasons now. I was excited when we signed him, excited now. Last minute yes, panic buy no!!

Even if we tend to sign messi ull still here the same comments coz so many people does not like any arsenal signings.shame on them

You're so right, er, Wrighty. (Should that be 'your so right'? LOL.) Back in the gloom of that deadline day it was the word ARTETA popping up on the BBC site that made my heart beat faster. . .then the disappointment of the usual 'deal off' stories, until he finally signed. He was a class act for the Toffees and he's been a class act for us. He may not the best summer signing (that's The OX) but he's been by far the most valuable and he's made the biggest difference to our season. Pleased for the guy, too, that he'll fulfil - touching brain and other bit of wood - his wish of playing regular Champs League football. And who knows, maybe even a Spain call-up?

Good post Wrighty.

2pistolz2cannonz. Very good game yesterday thought the midfield three were outstanding Arteta was good but Song and Rosicky were also amazing Rosicky is like a new player absolute diamond have to give Wenger credit for the team selection. Walcott i thought had a good game against cilchy an yossi was fantastic an should be a sure starter for the next games. We battled hard for 90plus minutes proud off the lads

GREAT BUY ...ARTETA ADDED VALUE TO ARSENAL.
SOMETIMES HE HAS UNDERPERFORMED AND ARSENAL LOSES (LIKE @ QPR)BUT THAT JUST SHOWS U HOW IMPORTANT HE IS TO THE TEAM.
AT EVERTON HE PLAYED AS DEFENSIVE AND ATTACKING MIDFIELDER, AT ARSENAL HE IS MORE OF A MIDFIELD ANCHOR PARTNERING SONG BUT ALSO BRINGING IN THE FLAIR.

I never thought he was a panic buy. i relivied when arsenal finally signed him. but i disagree with 1 thing you said in this aryicle and that is he ran the show yesterday he was good but it was song who running the show throughout

He was a panic buy because he was not on the original list of players to buy I believe, but has done really well for us.

Cheers Kim

I think he was abit of a panic buy but who says they cant be good ones also its worked out very well.

Just throwing something out there Wenger has sadi the team has grow the last 2/3 months is this any way related to Arsihvan not being at the club????

If you look at City and Balotelli lack of being a team player has brought down the whole dressing room. I'm just wondering the fact that Arshivan wasnt much of a team player was this affecting his teamates hence now he is goen there seems to be more togetherness????

the circumstances and poor handling of cesc/na$ri's departures were clear factors in the purchase and saying otherwise would be naive, particularly because wenger has long admired the 'princely' spaniard. if he had joined when we still had the aforementioned duo i think last year could have turned out differently but let's not live in the past. no one is saying that he is not talented but the environment that brought about his move to arsenal rightly raised a few eyebrows. 'panic' is a strong word but let's face it, signing him 2 years ago rather than the last day of the window would have resulted in a different reception. i've always been a huge fan and am just glad that moving forward we will have a formidable midfield when jack (and hopefully m'vila) gear up for next season.

Totally agree with what Cesc said.... said...

Arteta isn't doing very much more than Denilson was supposed to do, really and probably Denilson might have similar skills, similar haircut, similar long range shooting, i don't know the comparisons go og and on.

Why it didn't work out for him and yet Arteta could come straight in and be just that little bit more forward-looking and just that little bit more savvy defensively, maybe a bit more self confident ad be one of the season's successes is quite strange - but if Sao Paolo can find £4m or so I'd be quite happy with the swap.

I hope everyone out there who described Mikel Arteta as a panic buy will stand up and apologise profusely until Tottenham Hotspur one day win the league. In other words, you'll be saying sorry for a long time. Maybe forever. And ever.

class

i always liked arteta even when he was in everton ...he is a very hard working player

Arteta was a panic buy first and foremost. However, was a considered panic buy if you get what I mean. He's been excellent but to deny he was a panic buy is a bit snooty. BUT that doesn't negate from the fact that he is sheer class.

denilson is not a defensive player thats why it did not work out so well for him

Yossi was superb yesterday and every time he puts on the shirt a true professional considering he is a loan signing at a very mature age who could easily not bother turning up. He must truly feel at home in the north of london. Well done Yossi and thanks for the work rate.

Panic buy?? Yes & No. YES maybe because it is on the deadline of the last day of transfer window after loosing Fabregas & Na$ri in midfield. On the otherhand he can not be consider as a panic buy because he cost us only 10M and not 20M or 30M and do not forget the more important one, if he was a real 'panic buy' the board would have never never deal with him on his salary, that is reduce his salay from 70k/week(everton salary) to 60k/week(arsenal salary 'big four team please')on the last day, but if it was a real 'panic buy'and our board have done that ""MY GOD"" we must sack them because they are simply mad.

Good article, until i read Jennifer Aniston...WTF...hehe...J/K

I always have been an admire of Arteta and i was very happy to see him sign for Arsenal. he is technically very good which suits arsenal style. Its shame when some people thinks and compare him to CESC. They are different types of players. my opinion is when i watch him play he looks like he player for arsenal for more than 5 years.
ARSENAL 4 EVER. (MIRON.S)

WTF is a "Panic Buy"?
All of a sudden a new word gets dropped by the media, and we gooble it up.
Come on people, wake up!

Anonymous said...

He was a good panic buy. If we had bought when he was in his prime we may have been champions in one of those past seasons.

Wenger is thick. Wrighty is thick.

All this talk about Denilson made me have a nightmare about seeing him in an Arsenal shirt again, argh!!!

jen said...

LOL!

Mr No-Goal-Ponny-Tail is a panic buy!
just because the media did not sense wenger was buying Arteta does not means he was a Panic buy....

in this case, arsenal held the news well, before the price hit the ceiling....

wenger=wise man

He was a panic buy. Just becase he scored a goal does not turn him in Henry. He is a panic buy that has worked out, but a panic buy nether the less

Way too many people jump on the media band wagon in this country. How well arsenal have done is contrary to the crisis the journalist mugs reported. Shows what they know. Makes me laugh the media agenda against arsenal and the love in with tottenham. Don't understand that, why back a club that hasn't won the league in 50 years over a club that changed English football and broke numerous records along the way

Anonymous said...

IF arsene had been after arteta for a while hes hardly a panic buy is he.

Arteta has been quality this season as well

Anonymous said...

I think he was a Panic Buy.

But I also wanted to sign him for the last 3 years, I thought him and CESC in midfield would be AWESOME!!!

We will never know,

I am very grateful for the panic buy!!!

He is a fantastic player and I agree about filling the denilson position, arteta can defend as good as any midfielder in the prem!!!

LOOOOOL how can someone call the blogger "thick"? i guess there are Spuds in disguise lol and it makes them happy to call people thick and waste just like themselves ha.

Anyways, Arteta is giving us more than what Cesc gave us in his last 3 seasons. You can shoot me or call me thick. i just said it and will say it again. There are some games we wouldnt have won with Cesc and Na$ri in the team. Arteta is a fighter and full of energy. He seems to love playing for the Arsenal and who doesnt? we are lucky we have him and long may continue. I just feel sorry for Wenger once Jack is back because then he will have Song, Arteta, Rosicky (the new Rocky),Rambo, Coquelin and Jack to choose from and let not forget Diaby.

For Arteta is a resumption of the heart not a mere say. Who ever sees a widow cry then spit out a loop? Wegner buys the heart not the way the world would think. May Arteta find success in his career. Long live the true Arsenal bloody lads.

some thick guy says he's a panic buy cuz he wasn't on the original shopping list. how do you know who were on the list? have you seen the list?

Anonymous said...

wonderful piece, but let's clear the air on certain things here. a panic buy may be referred to as one made in the last minute to salvage an impending disaster. our start to the present season was an impending disaster. losing 8-2 to man united, and 2-0 to liverpool was an impending disaster. jack was out injured. our mid field & defence were in shambles. players were bought in the last minute to help salvage the situation by strenghtening the weak areas. it paid off, and we're all happy cos they were good buys. now, does that mean arteta, benayoun, mert, and santos weren't panic buys? they are, and are the right panic buys.
