Will Arsenal ever spend £20m+ on a player?

Who is Arsenal's most expensive ever signing?

I've seen that Jose Antonio Reyes (£17m) was, Arshavin is (£15.8m), Sylvain Wiltord (£13m) is in the frame too!

However, the true fee of any player that signs for Arsenal is never truly revealed. It is a secret. Not even Arsenal know.

So those figures I have written after the names of players are just rough guides really. Not stone cold Steve Austin guarantees.

Despite not knowing the true cost of these players the fee involved is quite high but I doubt any of them have reached the £20m+.

Reyes, perhaps, could have due to the clauses in his contract but he missed paella so much he went back to Spain.

I ask though; will Arsenal ever spend £20m+ on one single player?

I doubt it because Arsene Wenger begrudges spending 20p over the top. Even his Sun newspaper.

Players don't come cheap these days. Ask Real Madrid. But to buy top, top, world-class quality you have to be prepared to spend big dough and Arsenal don't.

It would be majorly exciting to see Arsenal have splashed a lot of money on a top name but we know it isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Wenger has his ways and I'm glad he isn't prepared to dig Arsenal a financial grave but maybe, just maybe, a big money signing is what the club, and Gooners need.

It will send a signal of intent out to the world of football. And to us.

I'm not saying Arsenal should spend money just for the sake of it but when I see Liverpool spending £17m on a full-back to improve their team it does make me wish Arsenal would loosen the purse strings a little.

If we need to spend big money it has to be for the right reasons. Obviously to improve the team first and foremost.

But while the likes of David Villa, Franck Ribery are being linked with moves for stupid money to Manchester United, Chelsea it kind of makes me miss those days when we were linked with them.

Keep it Goonerish...............

I can sell myself for just 10M GBP

one day we will because inflation will mean £20m is not a lot! But I think the next manager will spend £20m pretty soon after he joins. wenger does not need to.
Arshavin was our most expensive player because he was def more than £13m for wiltord and Reyes never reached £17m or anywhere close to that. I understand he cost us around £10m in the end due to his relative failure.

David said...

So you'd prefer us to be spending £17+ million on the likes of Glenn Johnson, rather tahn unearthing quality like Clichy and Sagna for the price we have done?

Anonymous said...

16 mil for Bent, trust me the rate of a transfer can be deceptive and if he is worth 16 mil i think we should be spending 200mil to find a player worth playing for us.

FFS Wrighty7!

You goin all spoilt baby on us coz the scousers are spunkin £17m on an average ENGLISH right back???

Wow, surprised at you dude... Thought you were better than that...

Who knows if we'll spend £20m on a player, but whining about wanting us to simply coz other teams are, aint the way to go mate, IMO...

I know its boring n shit, coz its the close season, but....pffft

I seriously doubt there's £20m in the kitty anyways at the moment. We'd need to seel 1st and I guess there's one name that could recoup that amount, more or less aint there...

Goonerchef said...

What makes you think Wenger reads the sun? haha

Anonymous said...

Only because of inflation!

Wrighty7 said...

Spike and David,

I don't mean it like that.

I dont want Arsenal to spend big money just because other teams do but it would make a change to spend big money to imrove the squad if it has to be spent.

Liverpool has identified that Johnson will improve them and are willing to pay the money.

Last year Arsenal lost out on Alonso because of £2m.

wrighty i would love it if he did spend 20m+ this summer, especially if it were on someone like benzema but my head says that itll never happen!

Anonymous said...

"of course, but not while wenger's in charge"

Because our new manager will have a MASSIVE pot of money which wil MAGICALLY appear at his feet as soon as he arrives.

Of course...

Spike said...

Wrighty7;

Fair enough, fella. But we dont know we didnt sign Alonso for £2m tho, do we? And then we signed Arshy for a lot of cash coz Wenger thought he'd strengthen the squad didnt he? Even tho, some of that cash may have come out of this summers kitty...

I think its more to do with what funds are available thatn some inate tight-fistedness on Wenger's part... But, I realise, Im in a shrinking minority when it comes to views like that!

And, IF Wenger read's the Sun newspaper, then I say he should be sacked tomorrow!

Wrighty7 said...

It would be surprising Pritpal!

Wrighty7 said...

@Spike,

You could be right mate.

We will never know because we hear so many confusing things come out of the club.

One minute the board say we can spend £30m is Wenger wants to, the next we are skint!

Anonymous said...

It's not the amount of money you spend it's the quality you get for your money. Sagna cost half of what Johnson does, that does not make him half the player. Do you think he would be any better if we paid twice as much for him?

Anonymous said...

I don't think Wenger was ever after Alonso, in fact, Alonso was an inch away from signing for Juventus with the Barry deal collapsing over 1 million here or there, not us haggling over 1 mil for Alonso.

Anonymous said...

Seems like every big club apart from us uses Gameshark nowadays. Not cool:(

Wrighty7 said...

Nooooooooooooooo!

But if we wanted someone to improve the squad then sometimes you have to spend big money to get that player!

Why is everybody so obsessed with HOW MUCH MONEY we SPEND? Isn't a quality player the most important regardless of his price tag?

I know that most of the time buying a quality player will cost quite a lot but we should be talking about WHICH players we want, not which PRICE we wanna pay for a player.

So while a Ronaldo, a Messi and a Kaka are unrealistic at the moment for us, we are still capable of buying quality players for next to nothing. That's what Arsene does well, and that is why we are still amonst the Big Four.

Anonymous said...

I don't see how wishing your club would buy an established and amazing player is seen as stupidity and being spoilt like Spike and David are saying. I'd like it as well, I know it's not gonna happen and as long as we keep signing players like Sagna and Eduardo it doesn't really matter but I don't see what's wrong with being excited and hopeful about a player like Villa playing for your club is wrong.

Anonymous said...

but I don't see what's wrong with being excited and hopeful about a player like Villa playing for your club*

I wasn't supposed to write "is wrong" at the end of that paragraph.

Melo to arsenal for 18m? I think wenger is after him. It could be true.

Anonymous said...

I've never quite understood what a "signal of intent" achieves or buys for the club.

It seems to be some mythical state of nirvana or something, but so far I really cannot fathom what purpose this would achieve other than to make a particular sector of fans happy and buy them bragging rights.

Somehow I can't see that translating as any sort of business case:

AW: hello mr bank ,manager, could I borrow several squillion pounds to send out a "message" to the "football world"?

Bank damager: eh? what's wrong with renewing your cellphone contract then with one of those sms packages?

Just doesn't do it for me for some reason...........

Arsenal - Yes.
Wenger - No.
It will only be when Dennis Bergkamp takes over in 2011 that Bergkamp will splash the cash.

peter hill wood wont allow 20mill to dissapear out of the accounts, not until like the year 2150 when even a sun newspaper costs £450 and 20 bensons are like £23.99, even a futuristic eboue will be costing about 18mill when we dare to let go of 20mill

Anonymous said...

wenger will never pay that amount of money for a player simply because he doesnt beleive in it.

the reason why he buys players cheap is because he thinks NO player is worth more than 20mil.

so he just shops at the car boot rather than shop at harrods to get what he needs.

even if david villa declared his love for arsenal and said he would join no other club than us wenger still wouldnt pay more than 20mil for him.

he rather pay 5mil for some kid from france or africa and try turn them into a new villa.

it will never happen while wengers in charge.

dont expect any big signings this summer either. wengers been in charge long enough, we all know how he works. we will see new players but dont expect to see 20mil here and 15mil there. it will be more like 5mil here and 9mil there.

and we all know wenger will bealance the books. he always has done. he spent a wad on AA in jan so expect to see a few players leave before anyone comes in.

Anonymous said...

The real problem is not paying £20+ on a player. Noemally at this stage you are paying for the potential. The real problem is paying over £15 for a player who is older the the £20+ player and had 2 good seasons (bentley spring to mind for some reason - starts with a hatrick and finishes with his last game of the season in november and Bent - my dead gran could have scored THAT GOAL...lol, veron the list list can and will go on. but the truth is that £20m+ is for players at 20/21 that suplid clubs want to pay.....

AND WE ARE not suplid (just poor spellers).....

Anonymous said...

Pointless question. We can't spend what we haven't got so no we wont buy anyone for £20m and nor do we need to.
You don't need to spend a fortune to get quality; Clichy, Vieira, Henry, Freddie, Bobby, Sagna, VP, Eduardo, Overmars, Petit, Lehmann, Gilberto...i could go on.

We didn't lose out on Alonso because of £2m. We didn't have the money to get him and we were not in for him. He was close to signing for Juve, it was pure speculation linking him with us just like 40 other players. Don't believe all you read.

I am not even sure Arshavin cost Arsenal 15.8 million. I think it was rather from 10 - 12 million.

Anonymous said...

The author of this is a jackass.

Anonymous said...

i understand your view. but here lies the problem. if wenger to spend 20+ millions, the player must be a star. just say, wenger interested in villa and willing to spend 20+ millions on him. now the most tricky part is, player like villa surely attract interest from other big clubs who can easily outbid arsenal. real, barca, milan, chelsea and man utd can easily bid for 40m. we can never win if a bidding war start on star player. that's why wenger work so hard to always do transfer negotiation in discreet maner. we were lucky because other clubs don't enter war bid when we sign arshavin because they can easily outbid us. unless the player himself wholeheartly wants to join arsenal, then maybe we got a chance. still, if wenger can only go as high as 25m while real can offer 40m, the club don't care about his player's wish to go to arsenal, they want extra 15m real can offer. see the logic now?

I think this idea that we missed out on Alonso for the sake of a couple of million quid started on ANR, where Myles likes to pretend he is all-knowing and has contacts at the highest levels within Arsenal when in fact he's generally guessing like everyone else. Even if we were interested in Alonso, of which there's no proof, his sale was always going to be conditional on Liverpool signing gareth Barry. When Barry didn't sign, any deal for Alonso was off. Unlike us, Liverpool weren't going to leave themselves short of experience in midfield.

I think the Arsenal way of living within your means will become the rule rather than the exception as the recession bites and credit becomes more expensive. One day we'll thank Wenger and the board for their frugality. Remember what happened to Leeds, Southampton etc etc.

Last but not least, you can't just buy success. Just look at the Spuds.

Wrighty, i don't think we need to spend big money to get the best player and winning not based on money. beside if the club spend big money they'll be in big pressure from the fan to win trophy.
I would LMAO if Real Madrid didn't win anything next season.

Anonymous said...

We need to but Lorik Cana or Felipe Melo and thst means we mighthae to spend 20 mil or more bit its necessary if we wsnt to win anything this season and keep our best players.

Anonymous said...

For those Arsenal supporters whom really care.

Fact: Wenger says we are not far behind Man U

Fact: Why are we more points behind them this season gone than season before?

We can make up all reasons, injuries, not spending, poor luck, poor form early season, selling players, no plan b etc...

Wenger has pulled the rabbit out of the hat before, but I really think we are in big trouble because, if Wenger rates a player I dont think he is going to get them on the cheap because of the market place. Tottenham, Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man U are going to spend.
A wise man once said "you cant keep fixing the house on the cheap, it will catch up with you when you least exspect it".
If we dont compete with wages no one comming to us and therefore we will fall behind.
However, lets see whom we sign this summer then we will know for sure what's installed for the gooners! Up da Arsenal.

Haldire said...

It's quite clearly evident that high spending does not equate to success. Just ask Man City.

Sure, sometime you may have to stretch your budget a tad to get the players you want, but I think this is where Wenger has the upper hand on the majority of other players.

In my mind's eye, I can see Wenger flipping through his little black book that comprises of every single player in the world. Hahahaha. Just kidding, but seriously, any high-profile player linked to a big club; Wenger probably knew about them before they hit it big.

Look at Sagna and Eduardo. Classic examples; relative unknowns, both cost under 10 million each (which is rare, perhaps for any player, regardless of position in today's market)but would you have anyone else in place of them?

I think we will. Our low wage bill and transfer fee's are because of our current situation.

If the club made 500m profit then they would have a 250m wage bill and a 200m transfer kitty.

Once the stadium is steeled not paid for but really under way. And the Highbury development is sold we will have a lot of money to spend. We pay 25m a year in loan fee's to the Bank for the two developments. That eats our budget down.

The difference with other clubs is they either have outside help or just seamingly ignore it.

Liverpool, can no way afford to spend 17m on a right back.

No chance.

COME ON THE GUNNERS

I think that when Arsene goes for a player... the club tries to get more cash by making the player more popu tryin to get bigger clubs attracted to them (Sakho.. His Agent talking about Man Utd) Therefore there becomes a bidding race, and Arsenal dont have the financial power to cope. I think this is the reason we cant get some of the players Wenger wants.
Plus Wenger is well known for his talent spotting so therefore the selling club puts there price up and Wenger cant get the players this way either

Anonymous said...

Cant see it happening!Apart from Cesc,Clichy, sagna, we couldnt recoup 20mill for one player, Song,Eboue,Diaby,Walcott,Rosicky,Senderos all worth about 5mill a pop, Weve bought cheep an badly over the last 3yrs apart from Arshy. Why are funds such a skidish issue at this Massive club!

It is farcical that whilst the rest of us are going through a recession and struggling to make ends meet, football transfer fees and wages are going through the roof. I read an article the other day which said football clubs’ takings have gone up 26% over the past year and wages up by an average of 23% (or may have been vice-versa, can’t remember). This is a ridiculous state of affairs. However, it is up to us as the fans to do something about it. The number of times I read people on here having snidey little digs at each other for not going to the game is ridiculous. The point is, the premiership “Sugar Daddies” (Man City included) are not in it for the good of the club. Whilst they will shell out an initial outlay to improve the team, eventually they are businessmen and are going to want to see a profit. The whole thing creates a vicious circle. The top players keep demanding more and more money, which results in the clubs paying it to keep themselves at the top or to catch up. This leads to demands getting higher year on year. The clubs have to make the money back from somewhere, so there goes another couple of quid on ticket prices, 50p on your half-time pint. Whilst the fans keep paying it, the clubs will keep increasing prices and whilst the clubs keep paying more, players will keep demanding more. That’s the market economy for you. The only way we can do anything about it is to refuse to pay these prices until they get the message. A lot of people say “what’s a couple of quid more, it’s one less pint before the game”. Some people are at the stage where they can’t afford to buy a pint before the game. Soon it will be they can’t afford to go full stop. But clubs and players will keep on and on pushing that barrier. It’s simple elasticity of demand. Players will keep demanding bigger sums until the clubs simply are not…. willing to pay those sums anymore. Hence clubs will keep increasing their prices until it gets to the stage that the fans aren’t willing to go anymore. Using subtle tricks like Glazer’s mandatory cup ticket scheme along the way. At that point, we’ll have reached the stage where the working man is priced out and most of the tickets go to corporate idiots with more money than sense anyway. Unfortunately, the football fan as a captive audience is sowing the seeds of his own downfall. If we don’t like how this thing is going, it’s up to us to stop it by saying enough is enough. I have been offered a season ticket at O.T. but am not prepared to commit such a large sum of money with probably more to follow. I go to about 8-9 games a season usually, always ensuring it is within my means and never buy anything from the ground/megastore except the very occasional half time beer. I will cheer the team to the rafters when I am there, however, am not willing to have the p*** taken out of me. Unfortunately, it’s one of those strange contradictions that the real fans, the ones who have the most right to moan about the players and clubs taking it over wages and salaries, are the ones who are basically helping to perpetuate it. /RANT as I’m starting to do a Rafa now.

We got Arshavin for a reported 16 mil, Zenit valued him at 20 mil, and I gaurentee you that after next season he will be worth over 20 mil for us. I would rather Wenger by top quality for cheap and sell them for more, after we get the use out of them. Just like Henry, Overmars.

The problem here is people are starting to panick cause we haven't won anything in 4 years. Keep the faith people!!!
