I love Gael Clichy. I think he can be an amazing left-back.
A couple of years ago I even thought he was going to surpass Ashley Cole and become the best left-back in the world.
In fact, I even believed Clichy could have become the best left-back I've ever seen in my whole entire stinking existence.
So what has happened?
For some reason in the last couple of years he has appeared to go backwards and not pushed on with that potential he has shown in the past.
He seems to have a major error in him at least once a game. Sometimes we are punished when he cocks up, tonight being an example, and at other times we get away with it.
I don't think there is anything wrong with his ability. But I think there is a slight problem mentally perhaps. I'm not saying he is mental like William Gallas or Britney Spears but he must suffer from some kind of mental block at times.
Clichy seems to get a rush of blood to the head and he loses concentration at crucial times. Either that or he is worried to kick the ball out of play in case he busts a spectators nose or something.
I'm not trying to kick a man when he is down but his mistake was just basic. And that is embarrasing for someone who plays football for a living.
If this was just a one-off I'd keep my mouth shut but he has done it so many times in the recent past.
Cutting out these mistakes can put Gael back up there with the best of them. Ability-wise there isn't a left-back in the world miles ahead of him. He isn't far off the likes of Ashley Cole in that respect but his errors will always hold him back.
Arsene Wenger needs to do something. It isn't just down to Gael Clichy. Get someone in to help and advise him. And the rest of the defence too. Because if not these mistakes will continue to haunt us.
Step forward Martin Keown on a full-time basis and not just part-time.
Keep it Goonerish..........

Clichy was dog shit yet again!! How many time does he lose concentration???? You cannot make mistakes like that at this level. Gibbs deserves his place. Same old same old....will we ever fuc"""ing learn!!!
Hi Wrighty
Have to agree with you, by now he should be able to judge whether its in the teams interest to break someones nose. Love all your excuses for why he wouldn't just put the ball out but as you say tonight it cost us. Shame
To answer your original question...never! He is a clown of the highest order.
And he can't cross the clown. That cross for the song goal was a fluke. One in 300 attempts.
Hate to say it but he's nowhere near Cashley in both attacking or defending!!! He's miles behind. Even Gibbs is a better defender than that liability and probably a better attacker.
Clichy? More like Clisheet.
Hi Peaches,
it's just the basics to be honest. I mean, even my 7 year old niece would kicked that out of play!
Wrighty.
Your right
You are spot on,Clichy was good enough in stopping C. Renaldo more times in his track a couple of seasons ago when most LB got turned over. There must be a reason why he is sliding backwards on silly basic moves,AW has to unravel the mystery.
With all the opertunities Clichy gets to cross the ball and can't seem to manage a decent ball, how much better would we be with a left back that could
wrighty, glad you highlight the deficiencies in clichy's game, unlike other bloggers who either cannot see the problems or refuse to comment. keep up the good work
"Will Clichy ever learn?". Never is the answer. He's Arsenal's weakest link. He can't cross and he can't defend. He's got pace and can run all day. But his real contribution is few and far between.
"Will Clichy ever been dropped?". Never is the answer. Arsene is notoriously loyal to his player.
"Will Arsenal ever win anything?". Never is the answer.
he was by far our best defender up until then
too many changes at the back today, sagna ahead of eboue for away games
sagna shaktar
eboue newcastle
it would have sured things up
i could see the reasoning behind Kos as he just back from injury
If i had to pick one player to be back from injury in this game it would have defintely been Song tonight we missed him
cilchy tries to dribble the ball out of defence and when attacks he just tries to pass the ball on his first touch.. he should controll the ball look in the box and then cross.... not jus cross like a fool
Fun fact: Clichy has assisted 2 goals and scored 1 in the passed three years. TWO ASSISTS and THREE GOALS? Terrible.
Clichy is awful in attack and error-prone in defense. He is not in Ashley Cole's class. To complete a night of full-back ineptitude we had the useless Eboue parading his total lack of defending skills.
Our manager can find find talent but cannot develop defending talent. In fact, he has no interest in the subject and as long as the Bob Wilson's of this world support Wenger no matter what then nothing will change.- Ramgun
Hi, great article, I cited it in my guest piece for DEFENSIVE MINDED about Clich's shortcomings - see it here: http://defensiveminded.wordpress.com/2011/03/02/guest-article-gale-clichy%E2%80%99s-defensive-shortcomings/
Again in the League Cup final he was guilty of ball watching and almost cost his team a red card and penalty as a result. My article was written before these events but as you can see from my examples, he's done it before.
Its just farcical if the reports are true that Whinger wants to hold on to Clichy. I'd love someone to run some stats on how many goals he has given away over the last two seasons. He is a liability and a headless chicken. Take the £7m Mr Whinger. And just for the record......our best players want to leave, why is that. This is not the Arse we know and love, something's going terribly wrong here. We need Captains on and off the field. And we need some guts around the place. We are seriously lacking in that dept. Whinger, if you can't see it now, then time for you to go.
