I have no hesitation in saying this

Thomas Vermaelen could be the biggest signing we have made in a long time. There I've said it and I aint taking it back!

Arsenal have been crying out for a dominant defender since the Stone Age. Well, it seems that long ago since Tony Adams, Sol Campbell, Martin Keown and co were the defensive lynch pins of the side.

It maybe early days but I'm very impressive by our new Belgian signing and I reckon he has the potential to be as much of a defensive rock as any of the players I have mentioned.

Not only has he impressed me but he has settled into the defence like he has been at the club for years. Not many take to the EPL straight away and Vermaelen has taken to it like I took to Budweiser.

William Gallas was in inspired form last season but even he has raised the bar this campaign. He loves to play alongside a partner who attacks the ball. Vermaelen attacks the ball better than Charles Bronson attacks screws in the nick.

Gallas is playing with a smile on his face and I think Thomas Vermaelen can take some responsibility for this. This is only a good thing for Arsenal and the pair are hitting it off quicker than Usain Bolt.

The signs are that this is as good as a defensive partnership I've seen at Arsenal for many a year and I think that the signing of Thomas Vermaelen could well prove to be the most important purchase Wenger has made in years.

No pressure Thomas!

Keep it Goonerish..........

Great post wrighty!!!

Everyone saying we need to sign vidic, essien, aguero, ribery are just dumb. spending 200 million signing all those super names GUARANTEES NOTHING.

we could end up trophyless, in administration, flak from everyone possible for spending and spending and not getting the results.

I much prefer, and RESPECT the Arsenal approach. we live within our means, we respect the budget, we respect the club and its finances, current and Future, and we either sink or fly by OUR values.

If wenger can make this team into a title winning side, the sky's the limit with this team.

I think we all agree. He's loking immense, Heart of steel he has. Not afraid of the ball or a nice strong tackle, Let just hope the Refs allow our defeder to make as many strong tackles as say Vidic does, Im almost certain though, he wont be. Up the gunners.

took the words right out of my mouth! probably the one in every 10 years kind of guy!!

I love vermaelen.what a signing he's proving 2 b.kept rooney out so well, did shrek even hav a shot at us?

I agree with you Wrighty. I still feel we sould have bought a DCM, but anyway there is nothing we can do about it now. I will say this though. If a certain Mr Rosicky get's injured playing for his country then piss him off then. He is walking a very tight rope by doing this and if an injury ensues I have no patience for him anymore.

I have to agree with you about rosicky.

Arsenal have been forking out the dosh for his medical bills for what, allmost 2 yrs now. What have his NT done, other than twice now play him ahead of arsenal, only to re-ignite his injury?

Bang on Wrighty. I've a feeling the reason we didn't go for another centre back (not only cause we couldn't get rid of Senderos) is because Gallas and Vermaelen have been superb together and whoever would of come in would be behind them. I think that with him in there and the way we're pressurizing teams higher up the pitch we look much better defensively than we have for a number of years. His reading of the game is brilliant and can't wait to see him up against someone like Torres or Drogba.

remember his lung busting sprint from 1 end of the pitch to another and then superb last ditch tackle to save arsenal goal? it was superb, the determination he put in is better than anyone i've seen. now all his critics just have to eat the words back.

ased that Rosicky is playing for the Czech Rep. He is clearly not up to match fitness and a couple of games, where he is not at his best, are better given to internationals than to Arsenal. He needs to test his fitness and if he does break down, its better that it doesn't cost us.

ITS GONE!!!!

I wrote in yesterday too. Got a similar response to everyone else. I responded to that saying I wouldnt be using them anymore and I hoped they would be sued. I think we have beaten them - but i can tell you now that I will be looking elsewhere from now on anyway.

I guess we can put those "arsene can't build a defense" protests to rest.

Sagna, Gallas, Vermaelen, and Clichy? That's a pretty good back four.

Can't stand Bud myself!

I agree with your sentiments but likening the lad to a weak as piss, watery foriegn beer is outrageous.

Stella Artois would be a far better comparison.

Tell us something new. We already know this. That's the defense sorted then huh.

But we will win nothing this season and come 4th again, guaranteed, until Mr Wenger finally clues up that our midfield is way to delicate and fragile and young. He needed to buy a hard defensive midfield and get over his love affair with Denilson, Song, etc but again he's failed to plug the gap with 30 mill in his pocket. A bunch of babies in midfield will win squat again and Fabregas and Arshavin will be off this summer to get the salaries they deserve elsewhere.

Inexcusable imo.

spot on wrighty! fingers crossed no injuries..

Wrighty, great as usual. But, you really overplayed the similies!!!

Total commitment to every challange or header. He's marshalling our team after a handful of games. Pure captain material.

Summed it up for me at Everton on the opening day, just before Fabregas scored the fourth. As soon as the Everton attack was cleared Vermaelen looked along the line and shouted at his defence to push out. That kind of little gesture, taking responsibility, is exactly what we need.

And a (KKKAAAA CHING!)
And take your money

I agree 100% Wrighty 7. You are spot on, once again.

Vermaelen does look very solid but i am a bit worried about the timing of his jump. If he can improve on that, he will be one of the best defender on earth for sure.

Vermarlen is our answer to Vidic.
To our critics, both within the club and outside, I ask them to consider this. Three of our back four are in the French first team. If, they played for England the critics will be over the moon on Arsenal's prospects to win everything. Such is the intelligence and exertise of English commentators.

yeh good post wrighty.

That back four is a very solid unit now, so why not improve our defence even further with a new keeper damn it! Almunia is second rate..apart from his performance at old trafford in the champs league, he just doesn't have the ability to be the top top goalkeeper we need

Totally agree Wrighty and once again Gallas been playing with much confident at the back.
Also Capello been saying good about our youth academy and he said that every club should do the same as Arsenal. Not the way how Chelsea do business to get the young talent.

Good post - I totally agree with you! Looks like we will have to offer him a new contract very soon, as it is likely that some sugar daddy-team without any culture might come knocking with cash flowing out of their pockets real soon (not Chelsea, though, hahaha)

i believe fabregas will leave arsenal but not now. wenger is set to begin negotiations with him to renew his contract and i think he will accept it especially if by december they will have mounted a serious challenge 4 the title. vermaelen is out of this world and he is just 23! am VERY optimistic about this season and we have showed class tact and steel. the games against celtic showed we can play a rough and fast paced game. the one against manure capped it all that despite some few points to improve on, we have come of change. manure may have stolen the three points thru cahoots with dean but will they also steal arsenals fine form this season? lets wait and see!

But the team should and may be needed another solid CB for Willy who not play 38 matches (he 's so easy to injured)
