"I really believe if you are a player who thinks only about money then you could end up at Manchester City."

Words of wisdom?

Nope.

These words were spoken by Gael Clichy when Emmanuel Adebayor left us for Manchester City in 2009.

"I really believe if you are a player who thinks only about money then you could end up at Manchester City."

"You have to think if you want to play for a big club and have your image or if you want to play for a good club and earn big money."

"When you ask someone to move for something like £300,000 a week it is just crazy."

In the next few days I fully expect to hear how 'excited' he is to be part of Manchester City's crusade. Like a knight.

I just hope Clichy doesn't bad-mouth us in the future. It would be surprising if he did, but it wouldn't shock me.

I guess it just shows that money is the be-all and end-all of most footballers these days.

Even someone like Gael Clichy, someone I thought was loyal.

Keep It Goonerish.....

Man City are much more likely to qualify/win the Champions League or the Premier League than they were when Clichy made that statement though. I mean money probably still is the main motivation, but now you might get a trophy or two to go with it.

Like anon says, he can justify the move as being about more than money now as they're in the CL and let's face, are more likely to win the league next season than we are.

Let's hope Wenger gets in a proper replacement. Historical precedence means I'm not filled with optimism however.

If we just go with the facts we have signed a young defender from Charlton and let our first choice left back go without having signed a replacement first.

Going with that this transfer window is going to be exactly the same as the others - All talk and no action.

We are becoming a joke of a club and Wenger has clearly lost the dressing room. Our decent players are calling time on him and we're still stuck with the shite. How long until Jack walks away? It's a train crash in slow motion. As I said above we are doing nothing different this window than we have in the previous 10.

Footballers are all badge-kissers, nobody should be under any illusions about that. What Wenger tried to do bonding young players was extremely naive and I would argue bloody stupid as he oversaw this with Monaco twenty years ago.

I can't see Wenger buying in defence, I can see him thinking that Djourou and Koscielny can deputise for each other, and Vermaelen can play on the left, so why buy for one player who has departed. I think any business that we do will be about one or two players not anything like what has been spread about. I fear for our club as we have been over taken and we are hoping that Financial Fair Play will give us some kind of edge but all that will mean is Man U/City, Ch£l$ki, Liverpool would have bought all those stars before we have even got started.

Unfair criticism.

When he made those comments, it looked like City had no direction and were just stockpilling players by throwing large sums of money at them.

Fast Forward to the present day and Clichy is leaving Arsenal's sinking ship to join a club in the ascendancy -a club whose immediate prospects look far, far better than those he is leaving behind.

Anonymous said...

Very unfair.City have improve beyond regognition while we are going backwards.City have more chance of winning trophies than us.There is not anyone alive who would not move to a job that paid you more money.

Anonymous said...

Lets face it when clichey made those comments 2 years ago he probably meant it,but 2 years is a long time in football,Man city talked a lot then and iritated a lot of people but last season finished above us and won a trophy, until we are prepared to spend and bring in some proper quality we will slip further behind,United and chelsea will of strengthened again because of spending as have liverpool,i believe our best eleven is a match for anyone but our overall squad compared to the teams that finished above us is weak, come on wenger your philosophy of bringing through players is consistantly failing, get the bloody cheque book out before we become nothing more of a feeder club for man city,i hate to admit it but as it stands they are a far more attractive club to join not just for money but for silverware

To be honnest, there are better lb available on the market then Clichy..Seen som horrable defending over the years. His positioning is shite so i say, god deal for Arsenal....

wrighty, after months of keeping my silence getting behind the boys hoping they finished 3rd, resisting to turn my back on them the last day of the season or even flinging my seat at wenger, all in anticipation of a great close season, well we finally have some transfer action from the professor Good bye clichy and i for one wont miss you,you remind me of a doll my sister got from santa, when you laid it down it closed its eyes and when you stood it up it opened them

That was lifetime ago we may not qualify for Europe , they one a trophy we didn't

We are so self righteous as it is all we have left bar desperate hope

has the world gone mad???
clichy is rubbish. good riddance in my opinion.
the same papers that tell us our defence is rubbish tell us we're in crisis when we sell one of them. and probably the one that makes the most mistakes.
anyone of these players that say they want to leave i say there is the door... don't let it hit you on the way out. we were successful before this bunch of babies and losers played for us and we can be succesful again if we ditch the selfish little prats and put some real men on the team that will fight for the cause.

Clichy put in a good shift for us, have you ever thought that the players might know somthing we dont yet seem to grasp....ARSENAL are more about Money than any other club 25m for ade 15 for kolo the list is endless but no reinvestment we gotta have at least 140m in the kitty. Good luck Gael only wished Arsenal had your ambition!!!

It is the first season ever under Wenger i feel we have no chance of winning a trophy,we are now the new spurs,it sends shivers down my spine. The day of cheap purchases are over, you cnat get henry for 9 mil,not Vieira for 3,Pires for 4 etc. What Man City,Man Utd etc are doing is making it impossible for a club like Arsenal to compete.I do wonder how clubs like those mentioned above can keep spending like ther was no tomorrow especially a club like man utd so heavily in debt but still taking their summer spending close to 100 mil,it is crazy or are we just to frugal for our own good ???

I think he was pushed more than he left tbh, he isn't seeking more money but a team where he can get a first-team spot and not get victimised by bombardiers all game, City offer him that and I think with Gibbs behind him he saw the writing on the wall.

Oi Oi Wrighty, how you dooin' mate?

We should have just straight swapped him for Bridge a better defender.
If Bridge cannot make the first team Clichman has just done a Hleb/Bentley/Flamini/Adebayor/Pennant/ and will catch splinters until the FIFA fair play rules come in and he will end up at Nice on a free.

Long time mate, I'm good. You?

IMO Gael could have gone on to become one of the best l/b's in the world.

Its a shame that he seems to have regressed over the last couple of years.

Not bad Wrighty.. had a tough year.
I share your opinions on Clichy to a degree and love his energy. but he ain't no Cole, he even scores less than the Winterburn.
He promised so much, but he should be suppling by now.

HE WANTS TO WIN TROPHY'S AND GOOD LUCK TO HIM. IF HE HAD STAYED AT ARSENAL HE WOULD WIN NOTHING, FAIR PLAY TO HIM AND HIS HONESTY. GO CLICHY AND WIN AS MANY TROPHY'S AS YOU CAN BECAUSE YOU WOULDN'T HAVE WON ANYTHING IF YOU HAD STAYED AT ARSENAL

You have to love players who say they want to leave to win silverware ... as if they have nothing to do with making that happen for Arsenal

So money is the in thing. If the gunners aint going to splash out opting for kids and cheap buys, you have been warned.
They could fight for a place in the europa cup. The ES was built to fund the gunners in the fight against MU and other top teams. Sad to say the owners have deviated opting for prudence and Wenger accusing other teams of financial doping to win trophies. Well he is entitled to his own opinion.
I forsee the gunners struggling in the coming years repeat years not one year. In time to come the ES will become a white elephant with faint memories of the invincibles.
Get real,Wenger, Stop your pretty soccer. Play to win . If ugly so be it. If not ,get out and let somebody who plays soccer to win.

Hi Wrighty,

I have been arguing with fellow Arsenal fans for the past 5 years about the poorest LB to ever have played for The Arsenal in my 45 years of supporting them.

What a touch to nick 7 million from Citeh for an average player with a year left on his contract.

This is no sour grapes as anyone who knows me will be able to tell you that I loathe the bloke.

We lost the League at Birmingam because of this fool and for all the changes to our ropey defence he was the survivor.

Almunia and Clichy were our weak link in that defence. Gibbs may not be ready as yet but I would rather play him than Clichy any day.

Arshavin gets a raw deal at the Arsenal because of that prick Clichy, he don't cover him I read.

Why should one of our most potent attacking players be covering the LB. You couldn't make it up.

I saw Bob McNab, Sammy Nelson, Kenny Sansom, Silvinhio, Ashley Cole and the great Nutty Nige playing LB then along comes Clichy.

He can't tackle he can't cross he can't shoot, he can't head the ball. Yes he is fast and has a good first touch, then he switches off and the ball gets taken from him.

Good riddance MR Clichy, you are a lucky man to be earning lots of dosh at your new Club, you will be even luckier if they keep you long enough to win a pot.

please leave GC alone, he's been at arsenal for a long time(loyal) and rather than criticize him should however acknowledge his contributions despite his demise ( 6 years without a trophy and well according to football ethics -poor pay). That said i think Wenger should wake up and smell the coffee, there is a revolution brewing at and if any case its time both the management and WG realized it before its too late,i don't remember such a time when we (arsenal) became perpetual looser and product of snubbing by players.am not a pessimist and as long as i love arsenal i concur that the entire management and team needs a new model approach based on competitive advantage ,success rather than stupid excuses. In essence spend the money and get quality players not expensive(what is the use of building a team then destroying the very team by selling the best players-that's the worst football philosophy-it makes business sense not football and definitively does not deserve a competing and reputable football team like arsenal .i rest my case.

HAHA GREAT WORK WRIGHTY, WOULD LOVE TO SEE THOSE COMMENTS IN THE NATIONAL PAPERS

Meh, he's made a step up now. City are more likely to win trophies in the coming years than Arsenal. Any fool can see that.

I honestly dont blame Clichy. He has been at the club for 8 seasons and won a league and fa cup medal only.

I am a graphic designer and my current company does not offer me opportunities to win major creative awards like Cannes and therefore the money that comes with being a award winner. And guess, what I am looking for another job as I type this.

So in essence I cant blame clichy for his move. goodluck to him, all the best and thanks for the years of committed service.

I thought Clichy was part of the 'deadwood' everybody wanted to get rid of, why is anyone getting in a tiz about it?

Oh, the Wenger haters are out in force today..... Ok, let's see. How disgusting to find so called Arsenal fans bigging up Man Citeh and how they're gonna win this, gonna win that. Nailed on to do better than the Arsenal and have a '..better chance than us of winning the league.'...... With a load of players that are past their level of when they were playing in a mediocre Arsenal side. Adebarndoor - remember the fears he was gonna do better with them when he signed, what happened? -, Kolo -nice guy, hardly the top centre half in the country at any given time, or close -, Old Patrick - bless, he was a legend, but that wasn't yesterday- and now Clichy who was a decent player for us, but his performance slipped dramatically last season with mistake after mistake and he has to take some of the collective blame for having won nothing. Will you all just **** off and support a side trying to blunder through on the basis of throwing money around, buying has-beens and maybe move up North whilst you're at it you disloyal pr*ckheads. Do it now - thern you'll get to whinge some more when Tevez ****s off.

Wrighty 7 you should take a list os the names of all the people saying how bad we are and how rubbish wenger is. Just to have it at hand for the end of the season. Fact is this man has secured the future of this club. We had to move to a bigger stadium and that came at a price. He had to rely on youth, but still managed to stay in champions league every year. Every year pundits say we're fucked and will loose chapions league, every year arsenal and wenger proves them all wrong. Our most expensive player we ever bought was about 16M rio ferdinand cost about 30.

MaBs said...

I didn't shed one single tear. Honestly, he hasn't been that good for us, has back problems and has cost us many points with his poor positioning. Put Vermaelen at leftback, buy a tall, commanding, centerback (defensive leader and shouter), pair him with with JD and bam!
