Stephen Appiah on a pay-as-you-play-deal?

Stephen Appiah is available on a free transfer and I would be quite happy for Le Boss to sign him to Arsenal. I suggest giving him a six month long pay-as-you-play deal. People have said that his knees are shot but didn't people also say that about Marc Overmars before he signed?

By giving him a deal like this deal we have nothing to lose. If he doesn't play then he doesn't get paid, simple. We then wont get stuck with an injured player eating up the wage bill.

In my eyes if Amaury Bischoff is worth a gamble then Appiah most certainly is too. He is a player who is different to anything we have at the moment in the squad and will add depth to a midfield light in numbers.

Who knows, he may prove a great signing and we could end up with a very good player in our hands who at the age of 28 is experienced as well as talented.

Appiah could be over his injury, signing for Arsenal would provide him with a new lease of life. He may then even regain his form of old.

He has been in Wenger's radar over the last few years so maybe a pay-as-you-play-deal until the summer could be on the cards?

I think he has been an impressive player in the times I've seen him play and if he is willing to come to Arsenal then I would welcome him to the club.

Keep it Goonerish................

Pointless signign really. We look as solid as ever in centrqal midfield. The last thing we need is another defensive midfielder who has hardly any creative influence on the pitch. Too many bore draws or 1-0 wins.

Anonymous said...

Solid as ever? Denilson is absolute shithouse, Diaby is diabolical, and Song is inconsistent.

Anonymous said...

why would he accept a pay as you play deal?

i think it would be wonderful if he did but he gets absolutely no cover...

Anonymous said...

First of all, there is no such thing as "too many ... 1-0 wins".

Secondly, I agree with Scottpuffin: Denilson, Diaby, and Song are not quite up to scratch.

Anonymous said...

scott, if you believe that you have no clue about football whatsoever. The reason why we have managed to survive this awful spell of form is the defence and Denilson/Song in central midfield.

Our creative play has been awful. Some of our attacking players are not good enough (Eboue, Diaby and Adebayor at this moment) so we cannot break teams down and have to battle for a draw/narrow win.

Denilson may not fit the stereotype that is easy for you to understand, but he has been our second best player this season (behind RvP, of course) in a pathetic midfield.

FredIsDead said...

Why not? If it can suit a Saha and a Fowler why should it not suit another player past his prime, but looking to level a few more studs before he hangs his boots up?
StepApp, get on board.

has anyone actually thought that he just isnt good enough even at his 'best'-which he presumably isnt and may never again be.
i ask you this.........he has been training with them for a month+, even as commercially stupid as spurs are, would they really of gone out and spent 15m+ on Palacios if Appiah was even half the player you guys are billing him to be.

Anonymous said...

JUST WHAT WE NEED.JUST AS GOOD AS ESSIEN, THINK HE WOULD BE GREAT,BUT SICK OF HEARING ABOUT IT.

Anonymous said...

And of course a 1-0 win is great. But not when you have to score the one good chance you create because we have failed to replace both Hleb (Nasri replaced Rosicky) and Fabregas (from within the squad)

Unknown said...

't see why he would refuse a pay-as-you-play deal. He's hardly been flooded with offers, although he's trained with a few teams. I'd give him a miss though, as there have been serious question marks concerning his fitness. The last thing we need is another midfielder on the treatment table more than the pitch!

Anonymous said...

Thats the point of a pay as you play deal Arthur! LOL

Anonymous said...

Sorry guys but are you all mad? Appiah's been out of contract since the Summer. No-one has signed him up. If we'd have wanted him we'd have signed him months ago. I also remember Wenger denying any interest back then. He will not be signing.

lads denilson and song are turd they are not arsenal players denilson makes one pass out of four song is just too god damn lazy we lose too many tackles in mid and our work rate off the ball is shite we got too many african based players with that african work ethic too god damn lazy off the ball we think cos we play good on the ball its gonna carry us through but we dont work hard enough off the ball !!!!! cmon wenger u must see that i think he is going senile !!!

I agree with Mikeq - if Appiah can do a job then why havent the spuds signed him? Didnt he train with West Ham earlier in the season too? He definatley trained in Italy for a while and none of these clubs are trying to get him signed... Not sure he is the answer. Actually not sure what the question is anymore... our problem now seems to be scoring goals not defending the centre of the park. Whatever you think of Denilson and Song they are doing a job. I see Song do some stupid things but I also see him put in some great tackles and he covers the park well. I still cant forget how f*ckin good he looked in the African Nations last year... In short, I think we are making steady progress. I know fans want a quick fix but We really arent that far away - start scoring goals again and the world will look much more rosey. Probably!

Repeat over and over again.

Denilson - highest number of tackles in the Arsenal squad, highest number of interceptions and a better pass/success rate in the Premier League (top three at least in terms of midfielders/attackers)

I think I must be watching totally different games to "anonymous", because I believe a world class defensive midfielder is EXACTLY what we need, not saying Appiah is world class.Yes maybe in the last few games, Dennilson and song may just about held it together, but for most of the season, we've been totally overrun in midfield and how we didn't concede against the scum is down to just being plain luck that their strikers are shit, because our midfiel was fucking hopeless !!

Anonymous said...

The same team that has failed to threaten with any sort of quality or persistance needs a defensive midfielder? I find that hard to believe.

We, as a set of fans, need to see players being replaced. If you are not replaced and things go worng, in any area of the field, you blame the supposed "gap" in the squad.

The reason we are overrun in midfield is that we have pathetic attacking players by Arsenal Football Club standards. We cannot keep the ball and when we do, we have to use the defensive mdifielder a lot more than we should have to. Look at Man Utd for example, not one "Defensive Midfielder" in their team but they keep the ball and dominate games. Then the whole midfield defend as a unit and contain the pressure.

Have you been reading Stan Collymore's column by any chance?

jasy said...

and the highest no. of missed passes you twerp and our problem also is we got too many players who pass safely too many times hence denilson lack of creativity and no shooting prowess and we aint got enough wingers with pace who can penetrate and get behind the def to mix it up why play denilson out wide sometimes when all he does is play safe we are too predictable thats why we struggle against sides who stick 5 in mid cos u aint gonna pass thr 5 mids we got too many passers we need more runners like the good old invincible days of pires , ljunberg , overmars players who run past defs allday weve only got one now thats walcott !!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Song and Denilson have been excellent for the most part. They both played against the Mancs, Chavs, Scousers and scum. We didnt lose any of these games and they were arguably in the top 4 players on the team in each game. It's just a case of consistency. The 'quality' is there...it just takes time. My advice would be to give it to them and believe i them.

Anonymous said...

Denilson, in a normal Arsenal team, would pass to Fabregas, Nasri and Arshavin when he wins the ball (68 times this season and countless interceptions may I just say) but now he has Diaby, Song, Eboue and Ramsey... GREAT PLAYERS!!!! Therefore Denilson has to try and do things that he cannot do like pass it long or try and create.

His performances in the Carling Cup have not helped him at all, people now think he is a creative AM and assume, without analysing/watching the game properly, that he is an AM and therefore cannot tackle.

Also, if you class Walcott as our only winger who can take players on you have got it wrong? How often did Walcott skin a full back and do anything of note. A hint of bias I guess?

Anonymous said...

Appiah would be a great signing and add some much needed grit in the midield! There isn't one player in our curent midfield (cesc aside) that you can see the opposition be fearful of playing against.Appiah would add that to the midfield..
He is in the mould of Essien although not quite the same level. And i'm sure most Arsenal fans would have been happy now had we signed him not Chelski!

Appiah trained with us earlier in the season, even though Wenger denied any interest. The fitness team supposidly advised Wenger against taking him as had no proven fitness in last 12 months.

So if for some reason they now deem him fit enough, I would welcome him in the side....

But seeing some of the demands he has made from his prospective new clubs I don't think he will be too interested in Pay as you Play..

Anonymous said...

"grit"!!!!!!! It has got to be the most overused word in the English Language when discussing Arsenal?

Closely followed by the term's "heart" and "steele" I suppose...

I dont think anyone on here will ever convince me on Denilson. I thought he was poor again v Spurs. But Song out of all of them is really growing on me. His performance was strong again and for me has produced the Arsenal performance of the season with his 2nd half effort against Chelsea earlier in the season. Diaby is frustrating (and a tad lazy) but hopefully he can come good.

As has been said earlier if Spurs didn't want Appiah then that says it all to me. I am not totally against it though, who is to say it wouldn't work.

Would love to see more local talent coming through though. Players who had a sense of the history which we seem to be losing more and more of each year.

JR

Anonymous said...

anon, the reason we are over run in midfield is we have no ball winner who is capable of breaking up play, and protecting the back 4, thus allowing our creative players to launch attacks! Even when Cesc was fit we were still struggling because he is having to do the job that last season matty flamini was doing,Gilberto before him and Viera before him !So obviously we are missing a player of that type, because the players that have come it are not up to the job.what hurts even more is that we actually had a player of that quality and we let him go, i.e Diarra !!

Anonymous said...

"I dont think anyone on here will ever convince me on Denilson"

This just proves my point about Arsenal fans. If they don't like you, they will not like you whatever you do. You have to be superbly outstanding every week for people to take notice.

Gallas is a prime example. Our best central defender for the last three years, but it is only since his outburst and stripping of the armband that anyone has taken notice of how truly World Class he is.

Hard to please is not the word because Song has been terrible in many matches but we accept one decent performance against Spurs as a sign of things to come. Selective pleasing is the right terminology I guess?

jasy said...

all the top teams , the central mid players have got everything can create, pass, tackle , shoot, skill , look at alonso, scholes , essien, ballack, mascherano, gerrard , carrick , lampard ,they got everything , denilson and song aint even got half that and never will the day they even get one shot on target is the day arsenal will start winning the league again but with them at the helm no chance and all we can look forward too is top 5 we need exp wenger is too obssessed with youngsters he puts youngsters futures instead of the clubs future he is exchanging profit for success bur right now the fans need success, not profit!!!

Anonymous said...

Flamini did not win as many tackles as Denilson has done so far this season. Accept change. If Wenger did not rate Denilson and thought there was a problem in that area he would have signed a player.

He quite clearly does not think Walcott is the wing wizard that some expected and Eboue is a pile of turd as a first choice player - so he signs Arshavin. A World Class attacking midfielder/winger.

Denilson has been outstanding. Accept it and move on.

Anonymous said...

Denilson is our best player? - must be denilson's girlfriend. Here's a clue - we really don't have a midfield, just some youngish, highly paid giggly morons. Wenger's right not to sign appiah, because we've no business in the top four, and appiah deserves to be in a top four team.

jasy said...

walcott is awesome with a great future before he got injured he was our best and most dangerous player hence theo theo theo just ask capello what he thinks and wenger rates him very highly before he got injured he was playng every game and what he did to liverpool and milan those mazy runs there is sooooo much too come

Anon,I couldn't give a flying what your little book of stats tells you about who's won the most tackles between denilson & flamini,I know what my eyes see, and denilson is no where near at the standard that we need! he only ever plays "safe " balls, he gives the ball away to often and he is not aggressive enough. The only stats that matter mate are premier league points and they are saying we are not good enough, now get over it !!!

jasy said...

omg well well ive been so many times ive lost count and oh by the way im off to the stadio olimpico against roma and when i was at the west ham game last week therewas so mant fans in the crowd dissin denilson it is why i am fueled with such hatred towards him

Anonymous said...

As the sole reason for our points tally - I would like to appologise to all Arsenal fans.

Whilst the creative ability of Emmanuel Eboue, Abou Diaby and Alex Song, the defensive prowess of Kolo Toure and the finishing ability of Emmanuel Adebayor is unquestioned, I, on the other hand, have been lazy and only made 68 tackles this season.

My fault only. Cheers.

Anonymous said...

"there was so many fans in the crowd dissin denilson it is why i am fueled with such hatred towards him"

Typical football fan in one line...

The majority of thick idiots do it so I will do it myself.

Anonymous said...

Denilson is just 1 of I believe 3/4 players currently mincing around a football pitch in an arsenal shirt that shouldn't be.Eboue ,bentner and greedy bayor are the others, you could put song and even diaby in that group, although I still believe (hope)that he will get back to the standard he was playing at before his injury. But for me the quicker our injured players come back the better, or we are defiantly looking at uefa cup football next season,(if we're lucky !!)

Rob C said...

If he is fit enough we could use him as our DM and let our remarkable offensive midfielders,AA,Cesc,Nasri,Rosicky,Denilson, and others do what the do best and get forward to score and create perhaps we will then get back to scoring 3 or 4 a game.Song would hopefully learn from him and improve his game as well. The only reservation about african's is their ability to tackle as they seem to get sent off regulary for poorly timed or dangerous tackles.

Anonymous said...

I am not an attacking midfielder - please accept that and understand.

Anonymous said...

what actually do you do then denilson, apart from just make up the numbers ?

Anonymous said...

Denilson? Lets see:
Lightweight, no strength, no pace, cant tackle, cant pass, plays sideways, doesnt shoot, makes alot of tackles - but doesnt win many, cant dribble, cant run past player, doesnt score that often, wouldnt get into MUFC, Liv, Chelsea, AV, Everton teams nor even Blackburn, Bolton, Tottenham.

SUMMARY: Utter shite. Championship player at best.

Cant believe Arsenal fans have been so reduced to accepting mediocrity that they think Denilson is Arsenal quality. Vieira, Ljunberg, Pires, Petite, Gilberto. That is the type qualify midfield player we should aspire too especially when AFC charge so much for a seat.
The reason why we are doing shite this season IS Denilson. Not Eboue, Song, Diaby, Adebayor BUT Denilson. Not only is his shite he destroys the balance of the team. Neither an attacking creative CM nor a defensive DM. Nor does he get on teh end of thinks a la Cahill or Lumpylard. His is a nothing player and waste of space. Song may be a shite defensive CM but everyone knows what his job is and it does not affect balance of team. That is why team has looked better balanced when Nasri has player in the middle 'accidently'.

By Hitman

Anonymous said...

Who's the idiot now then? Eboue is not shit? Sort it out mate.

Anonymous said...

i dont understand this, why would wenger even contemplate appiah? he obviously is not good enough thats why he has not been signed. I AM ABSOLUTELY GUTTED WE DID NOT GO BUY PALACIOUS SPECIALLY SEEING AS WENGER ALREADY KNEW HOW GOOD HE WAS, TO BE FAIR £15 MIL FOR HIM WAS CHEAP, I BET HE LEAVES SPURS IN THE SUMMER FOR EVEN MORE...GUARANTEED HE WILL BE WORLD CLASS, I CAN SEE HIM AS A TRUE VIERA TYPE OF PLAYER, GOOD AT TACKLING, BREAKING UP PLAY, GOING FORWARD...AS I SAY I AM GUTTED!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Just to clarify my point
Eboue, Song, Diaby are also shite and Ade is a lazy shite. BUT
Denilson is the biggest problem because not only is he less than shite he destroys the balance of the team. Teams do not fear a midfield containing Denilson because they know he will hearm them creatively and they can overrun him in mifield. Rember Fulham, Hull, Mancity, Stoke games? Waste of a player - just there to make up the numbers because Wenger did not do his job and buyer qulity midfielders in the summer.

I think some people seem to point too much to Denilson's stats when trying to illustrate how good he is.

Yes he's done the most number of passes- but were they the right passes, were they the safe option more often than not and subsequently slowed our tempo down? You can get stats to say whatever you want - John Terry's pass accuracy is better than Fabregas- doesn't make him a better passer just indicates that he attempts more simple passes

No one needed to mention Flamini's stats last season because everyone was in agreement that he was performing brilliantly on the pitch. The intensity and tempo he provided to our game is solely missed and I believe this is a contributing factor to our declining performances this season

Anonymous said...

If the spuds don't want him, why should we take him?

Anonymous said...

Okay, lets be rational here. Denilson IS a good prospect. He MAY become a good DM in 5-6yrs time. The trouble is he is not good enough to be in our 1st X1 now! Period. That role requires a leader of men, not a boy trying to find himself! Lets be honest tho, thats down to tactical selections by AW. As is the Eboue debarcle, Diaby LW nonsense, Nasri LW nonsense, Gallas as Capo etc...

Oh and just throw a couple pennies in...

Anonymous - Gallas = Poor. If you ever find time to watch the season review from last year, (check out AFTV on cable) u'll surprised as to how many times its HIS man that scores while he is barking out "orders" to others...

Jasy -I'm with u 100% on the wingers issue. We have a big pitch but no aggressive wingers!?!?! Shocking!

Anon 20:44 - CORRECT.

Our current midfield is a complete farce AND THERE IS SOOOOOOOOO MUCH MORE OF THE SAME TO COME.

We are not a top four team, we are a professional academy, proven ability like appiah deserves better. All the brainless twits who slate any player over 28 doesn't deserve to be a supporter or a championship team because frankly you're stupid.

Anonymous said...

Anon 23:54, that was not my point at all and I think your opinion is totally pointless and disregarded by the use of Caps Lock and silly points.

Why not sign Appiah, we have such good luck with African players.

Anonymous said...

There seems to be a notion by a lot of the bloggers, that are team is lazy, and one person put it down to the fact that the players have African ancestry. So that is what is about, as long as the Africans are winning, they are okay, but when they struggle, they are lazy?

This is what Patrick Viera said about Denilson

"He's a wonderful player. It's not going to be easy for him because Flamini was a good player," Inter Milan enforcer Vieira said.

"We need to give him more time to develop as a player but he can be one of the best players at the club. The more he plays the better he will be.

"He is young and has so many qualities and he's only in his first years of playing in the Premier League.

"He and (Cesc) Fabregas can play together, all the good players can play together."

I support the young men out there, fighting hard. It is not coming off right now, but not from lack of effort. Up the Gunners, and fuck you haters.

Anonymous said...

He's not had a club since the summer. Surely if he was fit/injury free a club would have took a gamble on him?

Although a fully fit Appiah would add a bit of bite to the midfield, I have no problem with Denilson but sometimes he looks a little lightweight and playing him and Cesc together seems to stop Fabregas from being his brilliant self.

Anonymous said...

Yes we may have players coming back,i.e Eduardo etc but unless our midfield can pick a forward pass we have only scraps to pick off. Only one goal in four games is awfull! Denilson can only pass sideways! Song is a poor excuse for Flamini. I can't wait until Fabregas, Wallcot and Rosicky(hopefully) are back boosting our attacking lines, then maybe we will see football worthy of the price we pay tickets for!

Anonymous said...

Appiah is owned by a third party and it's all very dodgy apparently which is why noone has been willing to give him a deal despite his being free for about 6 months

Anonymous said...

Diarra played really well last night for France against Argentina, making crunching tackles and breaking up attacks. Read Madrid has just leaked in 1 goal in 6 matches since signing him. He got the Man of the Match even though Argentina won 2-0. I wonder what would have been if he was still with us

Anonymous said...

We don't have a midfield, just a some kids with 'potential'. Let's all be excited and wait for five years to see what is really going to happen. Meanwhile we can pay the highest prices in the league. AFC fans are so totally daft that when robbed and kicked in the teeth they happily turn to their attacker to say 'thank you'. AND THERE IS SOOOOOOO MUCH MORE OF THE SAME TO COME.

Anonymous said...

I can see why some supporters encourage the signing of Appiah, however I would rather the club saved the money to buy someone in the summer window.

Would Appiah revolutionise the team?
No.

He'd take six odd months to get back into gear and then we'd have an extra squad player.

We're better off giving that time to Rambo and Wilshere who will surpass Appiah and are already fit, so what would be the point?

Appiah is not a big gun, never has been and never will be and has fitness issues. He would be great for Blackburn, we should be aiming for better players.

Nic Donati said...

IMO Song is good only problem is he is an out and out DM suited to a five man midfield. In a four man midfield he is too restrictive against most teams who just defend, perhaps against big four he would be useful but i think we have lacked creative spark cos We have missed all our creative players, what do u expecct when they are all injured. Everyone who get pissed off with Eboue well he is not first choice when everyone is fit and IMO is decent back up unfortunately he has played loads cos of consistent injuries but hopefully by the end of march everyone will be eback and it will be different. May be too late tho for this season but i am am so hopefull once we have a fully fit squad. Imagine a midfield 5 of Rosicky, Cesc, Arshavin & Nasri with Song as DM!!! that would be unbeatable!! only probelm is i dont think RVP can play lone forward and and he is one of our best players i just dont see how he fits in to this formation. I think Eduardo would be perfect in the formation that midfield 5 would create so many chances he would be scoring non-stop!!

Anonymous said...

I cant belive some of the absolute shite written by so called fans on here. The sheer amount of people jumping on the bandwaggon to slag off players is a disagrace to the club. people just simply forget the facts, ALL our best creative players have been out injured for long periods this year. Thats why we've been struggling for goals! Our midfield overrun? do me a favour, Denilson is one of our most consistent players and works his socks off. With everyone fit we'd be right up there, any other club would struggle as much with similar injuries. Just wait till evryone is fit then judge this squad

DENILSON IS FUCKIN 19 YOU SCUM THATS RIGHT 19! SHALL I SAY IT ONE MORE TIME NINETEEN.....! WHERE WERE GERRARD, SCHOLES, CARRICK, LAMPARD AT 19. I REMEMBER WATCHING CARRICK AND JOE COLE WHEN THEY WERE THAT AGE AND THEY WERE REALLY INCONSISTENT AND COULD NOT DOMINATE GAMES, DENILSON DOES NOT DOMINATE GAMES AT THE MOMENT BUT HE IS TECHNICALLY SUPERB AND IS IMPROVING ALL THE TIME!!

SO CALLED ARSENAL FANS? Y CANT U JUST BE A LITTLE PATIENT AND APPRECIATE THAT THESE PLAYERS ARE YOUNG AND NEED TIME 2 GROW AND IMPROVE.

I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND WENGER'S PHILOSPHY, HE WAS GETTIN FED UP EVERY YEAR OF HAVING 2 REBUILD HIS SIDES BECAUSE PLAYERS WANTED 2 LEAVE SO HE DECIDED 2 GROW A CULTURE IN THE CLUB AND YOUNG PLAYERS WHO COULD GROW 2GETHER AND PLAY 2GETHER FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME!

SO MY MESSAGE 2 ARSENAL FANS IS COME OFF OF CHAMPIONSHIP MANAGER, AND REALISE FOOTBALL IS A TEAM GAME!! INDIVIDUALS DONT MAKE GREAT SIDES!! TEAMS DO!!

Alright gunners, if we think Wenger is giving the kids the chance and time they need to progress, why not give Wilshire, Ramsey, Gibbs, Vela and Bentner those chances, instead giving it to Eboue, Diaby, Adebayor and Toure, i think there is some partiality going on here

I can't understand why Djourou will not partner Gallas since he is now miles better than Toure, i am really getting sick and tired of this shit excuses of Wenger.

Players out of Arsenal ( Eboue, Adebayor, Diaby, Toure) and give the kids some chance and you will be amazed by what you see.

Hi Wrighty

I think we have had Appiah on trial at Arsenal, and Wenger did not rate him.

I agree we look weak in this position with the players Wenger is trying out. Song is making some improvement - but he is no Vieira.

Wenger's view seems to be, lets hope we score more than the other team.

Anonymous said...

Anon 14:24, you are right about Hargreaves but he has not played for six months. As for Carrick - he is not a player who is there to win the ball back. He is England's most technically gifted central midfielder who can sit back.

The team just blows chunder because it's does. The players are too young and crap and wenger's lost his mind. Appiah, Palacios, Diarra are all excellent players, guess which ones wenger let go.
