Shay Given To Arsenal???

I may get this all wrong. Horribly wrong. More wrong than wrong itself but I'm hoping that the goalkeeping situation at Manchester City will benefit Arsenal.

Our former stopper Stuart Taylor has re-signed for Manchester City just 9 days after being released from them.

Of course at City Taylor is only a back-up keeper but the question is to whom?

Neither Joe Hart or Shay Given will be happy getting splinters in their arse by sitting on the bench.

So surely one of them has to leave and find pastures new?

Like most people I've suggester either Hart or Given would be great between the sticks for Arsenal. Fuck, even Krusty the clown would be better in goal for us than what we currently have.

Who is more likely to be available though?

I think Shay Given.

Joe Hart is ready to take the England number one shirt AND Manchester City's. He is the up and coming keeper whereas Given is coming to the twilight of his career (which is perfect for Arsenal).

It seems Arsene Wenger wants a keeper for the short-term, a couple of years or so, because he really rates that young Polish geezer we sent on loan to Brentford last season and won't want to block his progression to the first team.

Targeting Fulham's Mark Schwarzer indicates this.

I'd rather Given over Schwarzer any day. Or night. Or week. Or month. Or year.

Given would be ideal for Arsenal. A top-class keeper at the pinnacle of his career and I'm sure he would jump at the chance of joining us.

I've read somewhere before that he wanted to join us when leaving Newcastle United but Wenger squabbled over £3.40 or something.

I'm sure he would be cheaper than that now.

As I've said, I maybe wrong on this. I might have added 1 + 1 and got 3. Mathematics has never been my strong point but surely this could happen?!

Keep it Goonerish...........

Shay Given is a completely average goalkeeper. Im not posting just to wind anybody up, he just really is awful at everything other than shot-stopping, and area with really isn't any of our keeper's weakness in the first place.

Joe Hart would be ten times the signing.

You bloody wind-up!!!!

IF I WERE THE GAFFER....I WOULD CHOSE GIVEN OVER HART...I THINK "WRIGHTY IS RIGHT"..LOL.OUR YOUTH KEEPER....YEAH THE ONE WITH A FUNNY NAME,HE IS 20,HE NEEDS SOME TIME TO DEVELOP.AND WENGER WILL SLOWLY GOAD HIM INTO THE FIRST TEAM...JOE HART IS 23,AND LOOK AT HIM NOW,GIVEN IS 34,IN THE NEXT 4 YRS HE WILL DEPRECIATE IN VALUE,...SO GIVEN WOULD BE AN IDEAL SIGNING

Haha nah. he really is a completely average 'keeper. Lots of people agree with me, including Wenger and every other top manager who have made no effort to sign him over the past 10 years.

If Mancini picks Hart next season it just confirms my view.

Given over schwarzer?!

They're polar opposites, Given is a small, very agile keeper, who is a great shot stopper, but TERRIBLE at commanding his area, and dealing with crosses/set pieces/long balls.

Schwarzer is a big commanding keeper, one of the best around at commanding his area, and dealing with crosses/set pieces/long balls, but not an amazing shot stopper or spectacular keeper.

Which one of the two is more likely to prevent us conceding goals when we're shitting ourselves in the last ten minutes as the Stokes and Blackburns of the Prem are pumping ball after ball into the box?!

Which one of the two is more likely to help organise the defence, consisting of two relatively young and inexperienced players?!

Given would be an absolute disaster, but thankfully noone at the club would be so silly as to not realise that so it isn't even something worth worrying about!

To be honest mate I reckon Hart will be Man City's number next season.

Wenger "squabbled over paying three pounds forty for Given" ? I'm not surprised. That's a rip off.Best to negotiate. What about offering a Mars bar and a packet of crisps, Wenger? That's more your style.

wrighty,i like your blogs normally, but Given ? hes a nightmare other than shot stopping .Not for us I hope

Apparently according the player's agent the Portugal goalkeeper Eduardo has moved to Genoa rather than Arsenal because - would you believe it - Arsenal dragged their feet over negotiations !! Extraordinary - not like us !!. apparently he went for around £4m !!! I know he has had a good World Cup and that shouldn't be used as a sole benchmark but if we were in for him then surey the club must have rated him - and £4m FFS - Surely that is enough of a bargain. Our Pole ( the young one ) wont be ready for three seasons at least so WHY DO WE FUCK ABOUT WITH NEGOTIATIONS

Wrighty7 said...

Sorry George!

I guess its just different opinions.

I've always liked Given

George - the answer to why we bother with negotiations , is that we expect to get quality on the cheap. We( read ;Wenger ) won't pay the money necessary to secure the best talent. That's why we missed out on g.k. Eduardo, Chris Smalling - the young defender, and Xabi Alonso, just three recent examples.
If we have serious ambitions to win the league, this mentality MUST change.

We negotiate because we live in the real world. Some clubs don't. Some can afford not to: Man City, Chelsea and Real Madrid. Others do it but can't afford it: Portsmouth and, amazingly now Barcelona.

I for one am thankful that we don't pay over the odds in wages and transfer fees. And I'm grateful to Wenger for giving us Champions League football every single season (look how happy Spurs were at finally getting there for the first time in their history) and a new 60,000 seat stadium in his time at Arsenal. If you can't trust a man who has delivered these things and has had proven success in winning titles, then who the he'll can you trust?! He'll be the first to admit that he's made some mistakes (in recruiting players, tactics etc) but it boggles my mind that people can write things like "In Arsene we rust."

Slowly GOAD him into the first team - priceless - what with? A red-hot poker?
LMFAO

Jayjinho - I'm not saying Wenger hasn't done a lot for our club.Of course he has.Credit to him for that. However I'm referring to the RECENT past. Five years on. He has gone stale. His stubborn, arrogant attitude, refusal to spend big (even when necessary),poor tactical decisions, obsessive belief in youth,e.t.c. e.t.c.
Can't you see it's time he moved on and gave someone else a chance? Everything needs refreshing at some stage.Don't you think it's time to show some ambition for the future, instead of living on past glories ? We won't win anything while Wenger stays.

Given is injured and will miss the start of the season, so there's no chance that Wenger will go for him. Even if he wasn't injured, Wenger had the chance to sign him before City and he decided not to. I don't think Given is all that much better than Almunia. Did anyone see the flapping at crosses/corners Given did through most of last season?

Spectrum, I can see where your frustrations come from but I would argue that our patience will be rewarded. I believe we've had glimpses (13 minutes away from being European Cup winners against Barca with only 10 men in 2006 and close efforts in the Prem) to warrant persevering with Wenger. I also believe that the doubters should be somewhat optimistic by the acquisition by Wenger of players in their mid-20s. He's shown that he's willing to change and be fluid in his beliefs. Sol Campbell was a great example of that.

Assuming Wenger does go, who would you like to see in his place?

Some gooners depress me. Spectrum et al, when, oh when will you get that we've had no money for the last four years, and thats why transfers have been restricted to *just* Arsh at 17m and Nasri at 8m, and Vermaelen at 10m recently. Now we have money, now we'll spend.

You must be new here - I remember the 70's when we won nothing for eight years.

get a grip people

AKB? Not always,no, but FFS, he's the most sucessful manager we've EVER had....

Just another example of how some goons know nothing about football. Could not spot a proper keeper if he slapped you in the face. Given is quality has proved this in the PL and international level for the last 10 years. He is twice the keeper of any current English international, including Hart whos done fck all, no wonder your lumped with that clown Almunia Wenger knows nothing about goal keepers.

to the guy at 15:11.dont u understand a figure of speech....he will bring him in instead of the existing keepr,u know...play him for carling cup matches,fa cup rd3 matches, then if our keeper makes a small blunder he will swap him can't u undrstand this much....in connecion to the post this is why we should sign GIven!!To give the "pole in the goal" an opportunity to shine

Jayjinho - I would like to see Mourinho as our manager. He's a disciplinarian, shrewd in the transfer market, ( he would have been successful even without Abramovich's endless money supply ),a meticulous planner, knows his tactics, can motivate players and most importantly - has a proven track record AS A WINNER.
Sure he's got a massive ego.But I can tolerate that if he gets results, and he does - everywhere he's been.Unfortunately he isn't available - partly because he's only interested in big clubs with ambition. And that rules us out.

@ spectrum - if ur so impressed by other teams, y da hell do u support arsenal? Last thing we want r impatient n disloyal fans... As far as wenger is concerned he given us a season in which we have not been beaten n dat's just da cherry on the pie... I'd rather play champs league football every year n not win than go bankrupt in tryin to win just a couple of trophy's... How long will mourinho remain at arsenal too? 1 year, 2 years? Then after dat he'll find another club n leave us out in da cold? Puhleez! With fans like ya'll who needs enemies!

Given's an outstanding keeper, one of the best 5 in the Premiership. Anyone rating him as average is just looking for people to annoy. Hart would be a good signing, mainly because he's younger, but if Wenger has the chance to get Given he should.
He should really go for Tim Howard, but Everton will never give him up for the money Arsenal would pay.

wtf is wrong with y people

Shay GIven has been the best keeper in England for the last 3 years bar none.

he commands his area as good as anyone, is the best shot stopper in the game and sees danger beforeany other keeper would

Given to arsenal would be a dream but it aint gonna happen...... wil probaly end up with scwharzer or even worse joe hart or heavens forbid scott carson

It is a sponge-like matter that runs deep in these parts. The second issue, and perhaps more important fact that is always overlooked, is the information showing that unemployment figures in March and April were revised downward again for the 60th out of 61 times. in at the beginning of the upward trend. popular for precious stones, from bracelets to earrings, armbands on Jagged Alliance was another of the genre that appealed to me, especially with the team elements that are very important.
