It doesn't make sense!......

Le Boss has stated that he bring in at least one player before the start of the season. With the centre of our midfield looking lightweight after the departures of Flamini and Gilberto this is probably the area Wenger will be looking to strengthen.

Gareth Barry and Yaya Toure are players that most Gooners will be happy to see arrive at the Emirates. Miguel Veloso is another name linked with Arsenal who would be welcome at the club. All three are real quality and would be ideal signings.

Flamini was an outstanding performer for Arsenal last season, Arsenal need to sign a player who can make the same impact. Flamini's performances of last season will be hard to match, but I would be confident that Barry, Toure or Veloso could perform to this standard.

One thing makes me wonder though. We are in this position (of needing to buy) because we refused to pay Flamini the money he wanted. I applaud the club for not being held to ransom by players but if we sign a player of this calibre then it will cost a lot of money.

Arsenal will have to spend a lot more money on a transfer fee for a replacement and then of course there's the wages. The wages will be high because of the standard of player involved. Of course I would welcome a new signing but wouldn't it have made more sense keeping Flamini from a financial view?

It doesn't bother me how much Arsenal spend on a replacement, it's not my money. The point I'm making is that Arsenal could potentially be spending a lot more money on a replacement for Flamini than had we actually kept him.

I won't be moaning if we sign a replacement, I'll be rejoicing. But for a club known for it's keen business sense, this just doesn't make sense!

Keep it Goonerish............

Good article but i don't agree with your financial analysis. Yes it might have been be cheaper to keep Flamini but had we paid him, say 90,000 a week, then everyone else would want a pay rise. It wouldn't be long before the wage bill would cripple us. It's dissapointing but i think Wenger was right to hold the line as he is doing with Adeybayor. Get a decent defensive mid fielder and dominant centre half and we have a real chance.

I think it's obscene that all we ever talk about is money. If Flamini wants to play UEFA cup football on more money than he was on at Arsenal, then he can p*ss off. Should the Club really be held to ransom by transient mercenary players - of course not. We took Campbell on a free for god's sake. You can be sure if Toure, Barry or Veloso come then they will not be paid Chelski or ManUSA style wages, but come for the football, thank heaven.

I agree Arthur that if we gave Flamini that amount of money it could cause unrest in the squad.

It's just been something on my mind and I was wondering what my fellow Gooners felt about it.

Unfortunately you are write, we or I mean Arsenal will spend at least 12 m extra, it dose not make sense

Defensive midfielders can be found for the right price. Who's to say that Flamini could have maintained his level once he got his big pay rise, aside from the very good point that Arthur makes about the true cost of paying him at that level, which would have pushed up all the salaries of the rest of the team.

Great article and certainly food for thought.

I agree with Arthur on not agreeing with your financial analysis although I understand the point you are making.

Good point made Wrighty7 but Flamini would not be worth that money he wanted.

Pay Flamini his wage + a signing on fee - as AC milan did - reports were 120,000. Say that's true and say Arsenal do that. Then you must pay Cesc 120,000 at least. If Gallas is captain then he must be paid at least 120,000. Maybe not - maybe Toure is the captain. Then he must be paid 120,000. But what about Adebayor - your top scorer? If Flamini's on that money then surely he must be paid something like that. And what of Van Persie? In fact if Arsenal sign a central midfielder for 15 mill for 3 to 5 years and pay him 30 thousand a week then and don't have to pay 4 players another 2-4 million a year then they've broken even on the deal in a year.

It's all about keeping the wage structure in tact.

If Yaya was for sale Wenger would have signed him already by now in swap deal with Hleb....

"It doesn't bother me how much Arsenal 2spend on a replacement, it's not my money..."

Technically speaking, everything you have ever spent on tickets, replica shirts, mugs, scarves,DVDs and all other merchanise means that it actually IS your money...

I don't think wenger's even considering buying another midfielder, he's happy with Diaby, Denilson, or Ramsey as Fab's partner, with Rosicky, Eboue, Nasri & Walcott for the flanks.

If Adebayor stays then no forward is needed so this means he must be looking at a defender.

Micah Richards anyopne?

Flamini isn't on £120,00 a week. He makes £65,000. I dont know where this huge amount came from. He got a £5m signing on fee. Arsenal could have easily paid all this to Flamini. The truth is we were to slow to make the offer and Flamini fucked off. Its Arsenal's own fault.
Good article by the way.

indeed flamini was an outstanding player for arsenal last season but i think it does make sense that wenger letting him to go because wenger needs someone that have difference style of play than flamini that could brings another new style of play rather than holding the midfield..who knows? im pretty sure that wenger have a list of players that he want to buy not as a replacement for flamini, but another level of defensive midfield that not only act as an anchor but a playmaker..any idea anyone regarding this type of player??

Completely missed the point.
The season before last Flamini wasn't worth the extra money. This season he played well, and was offered an improved contract because of it, which he refused. It's the same with Adebayor. He say's he should be on Thierry Henry's wages, but TH14 worked his way up to that level with consistent performances over 8 years. We may not be a poor club, but if we don't work it out sensibly we will end up as one. If you want some rich Russian to come in and use the club as a plaything then maybe we could, but I don't think most of us want that. Good riddance to Flamini, he'll probably never play as well again because he won't be at a club that allows him to. He's now got to spend all his time defending because he's playing in Serie A...

here we go again ,wrighty copying yet another article from another blog

whats the point?

What blogs that then muppet?

Anonymous said...

Flamini would not have stayed anyway. He was unhappy at not getting a contract and was always going to go to Milan once they got in touch.

Ignore that prick Wrighty.

Good article mate

yeh i noticed that too, hes always copying other peoples stuff

just try and keep it real wrighty, you could have potential

The thing is you are always going to come up against the problem of wages when trying to sign there players.

Wenger was quoted in the press today as saying he won't break the wage structure to keep Adebayor.

Although your lot have big appeal in some areas, players like Barry must think why would I join the Gooners for 20k less a week than I can get elsewhere?

Ha ha, I love it.

I'm always copying other blog stuff, I cant get enough of it.

Thanks for noticing.

Don't forget that Flamini was holding out for more money after one good season in his natural position, while able to go on a free that meant that any club signing him could afford more to match his wages out of what they didn't pay to buy him in. It makes more sense to pay big wages to a big established player you've purchased or who has done it for you over several seasons.

I'd be very happy to "swap" Flamini for Barry, for example.

Great article Wrighty. I think the Flamini issue really wasn't about the money, but the principle of not paying over the top wages. We could of afforded to pay Flamini what he wanted but it was against the wage structure.

Anonymous said...

i think the flamster deserved what he was asking for simply because
1:we got him for free and put him on relatively low wages making a double edged saving

2: we could have offered him a new contract last season on much less than we offered him this time round, and still sell him if he wasnt good enough.

3: and lastly and frankly speaking, he knows we didnt trust him enough, how many of us were clamouring for the return of berto even though the flamster was proving game in game out that he was better.

hes not a mercenary, he simply paid us in kind, lay of him( bloody hypocrates)

Anonymous 19:25, an ideal player that fits that description is Veloso as he is an excellent defensive midfielder with a high level of technique unlike Flamini (Flamoney) or maybe even Alonso although he has faded as a player and is not particularly strong defensively.

Anonymous said...

flamini was nowhere near the level that vieira was at as a defensive midfielder so he didn't deserve vieira wages. the club offered what wenger thought he was worth and nothing more. paying premium wages to a player doesn't make them a premium player. at least now wenger has the chance to get a better player. money is not an issue.

I hope the "certain" signing Wenger is talking of is Miguel Veloso. He is only 22 and the best in that age bracket. I'm suprised Mourinho hasn't signed him yet.... or maybe I'm talking too soon!
I repeat, get Veloso now.

Add Christian Zapata to that and we're balanced. Everyone will be happy to see Veloso and Zapata but I fear this may not happen. Why?

The season is about to start and I feel Wenger may be looking at players who have ready-made PL experience. Barry comes to mind here. Maybe he wants Niko Krancjar. Who knows? HE knows and we'll find out soon!

Mate i love your blog but this post is really really i mean REALLY S T U P I D!!!
read Simon's comment on 19.00h and you got the answer you deserve, the one we've all been thinkin reading this incredible pile of stupid bs. I mean, plz, endulge me, come back to our planet. it IS kinda nice you know.. it even has a team called The Arsenal, who has a f****in WAGE STRUCTURE!!! AND A 580 MILLION EUROS LOAN TO PAY BACK!!

Anonymous said...

flamini is getting 55k TAX free a month from milan.. assuming 50% tax for that kind of earnings, he's on a 110k a month if he stays at arsenal.

obviously arsenal cant afford to have a replacable player, albeit did exceedingly well last season to earn that much.

it makes business sense to let him go. the wage structure will crumble down with that kind of wages paid to him.

*sorry 55k a week, not a month XD
