Time to scrap the one year deals methinks!

I've heard that life begins at thirty, or is that forty? In any case life at Arsenal certainly does not begin at thirty, far from it.

If you play for Arsenal and you are approaching the big 3-0, then you might as well pack your bags.

Over the years we've seen a steady amount of players leaving the club when reaching or nearing thirty due to the fact Arsene only offers one-year deals when renewing their contracts.

Is it time to change that policy?

Look at Hleb's situation. As you know, I feel that Hleb has taken a liberty at the way he is trying to engineer a move from Arsenal. But he is nearing the age of a footballer when that last long and well paid contract is on offer.

He won't get that at Arsenal. So you understand why, in a way, his reason for wanting to leave.

Most players (at that age with Bergkamp the exception) have left for the same reason. They don't have the security of a long term deal at Arsenal so they find it elsewhere.

I bang on about loyalty on my blog, but loyalty works both ways. If the club aren't willing to show their loyalty to these players by looking after them with longer contracts then the players won't return any loyalty.

Because of this policy players will always leave Arsenal when that final pay day comes. They know when they reach or near thirty, they have to accept these one-year deals or be shipped out.

Maybe it's time for a change. Maybe it's time to scrap the one year deals.

Keep it Goonerish............

you make it sound like they are on the breadline the dirty disloyal cunts. Hleb and Adecuntor can fuck off the moneygrabbing cunts. They make me sick when we are scraping the dough to go and see our beloved team populated by these no good cunts. Give me the likes of fab and clichy anyday.

Far from it mate. I just think that until we scrap the one year deals then we can say goodbye to anyone nearing thirty.

Read my previous posts about Hleb and Ade, I don't want them anymore either.

I was just using Hleb as an example

club should get rid for as much loot as poss and get c/f in who can't help but score 30 goals with cesc/rosicy/nasri creating tons of chances they should be proud to wear the red and white and become very rich at our expense

If they play up to standard they will be paid well within the one year contract system, no? The point is that I have always seen players that are good enough get offered the one year contract, time and time again. Arsenal are loyal to the players same way, even though it may not be what the player would prefer. Well how much per weak do these dudes get paid when they have these one year contracts, I bet you it still keeps them rich. I do agree that maybe players would feel a little better knowing they have a two year contract but definately now is not the time to change this as contracts dont seem to mean to much in todays world of football. I wish I could get one of these one year contracts, i wouldnt have to work for the rest of my life, most probably.

I agree with you Wrighty 100%

But contracts aren't worth the paper they are written on mate.

I recall him offering a longer deal to TH14 as he felt he was good for 32(?)but in the end received a better deal with Barca.

If the stats tell AW the player still has life, he'll extend it but when the stats show evident fading..........and I'll agree with him on that. I thought he should have got rid of some players earlier but maybe they were playing with injuries so not capable of 100% e.g. Henry. When the injuries persisted............

32 is the age at which one year contracts are offered not 30. Gilberto has a contract that would take him past his 32nd birthday if he were to complete the one year he has left on it. Pires left when his contract expired at the age of 32 and Henry signed a new 4 year contract at the age of 28 that would have taken him past his 32nd birthday. So don't make the common mistake of peddling the 30 year old myth.

I don't really care how old they are they can fuck off. I'll miss Gilberto though.

I understand what you're saying Wrighty and it's a shame Gilberto might be leaving cause he's a gent and a real professional, always gave 100%. But I'm not sure these one year deals for players in their 30s are really big stumbling blocks or big factors when trying to negotiate a deal with a player. I always thought it was based on the individual like Bergkamp cause he couldn't play 90 mins in every game in the late stage of his career or Pires or Ljungberg cause they weren't playing as well has they used to before they left. If Gilberto leaves it's not cause of the length of contract but cause he isn't guarenteed a place in the starting 11. Thats how i see it.

I think the one year contract is ok. If you are over 32, Arsenal will still offer you a contract, maybe not a regular starting position in the first team but you would still get paid. Because older player want to be regular starters they leave big clubs and go and play for smaller clubs, which give them what they want.

Wrightly do you think we need a new striker if Ade leaves, is Vela, Da Silva and Bentner not enough. don't you think Le Boss Should develop them, hey could you do a write-up about this or pose this question to other gooners.
Digg your blog, i think it makes other gooners aware of what you dont see, in general in Arsenal

Anon 06:45,

I think if we sell Ade we will miss him. He works extremley hard for the team and he gives that option of using the long ball due to his size and aerial ability.

Not to mention the amount of goals he has brought!

I think if we sell then we do need to replace him. We seem to suffer with injuries more than others and have a small squad as it is.

Got a feeling that Bendtner will have a big season this year.

Thanks for the complement.

I agree with you on this one as it is now i don't think we will ever have another LEGEND retire at arsenal for this reason.
