We can kiss goodbye to Alonso.....

I realise that Arsenal are about to play in an hour but I'm gutted by the fact that Gareth Barry has decided to stay at Aston Villa until at least the end of the season.

This rules out any hope we had of signing Alonso from Liverpool who will remain at Anfield now.

I really thought that we would sign Alonso on dead-line day and that Liverpool would get Barry. Well, we can kiss goodbye to Alonso now.

The question is; Who are we going to sign in the middle of the park? Options are running out fast and so is precious time.

Keep it Goonerish...........

yep, its quickly looking like AW's last minute deal plot is falling apart. I really hope we are not looking at a struggle between now and january before the transfer window opens again. 4 days left AW, please surprise us with something special

Liverpool are about to sign that shite ex-City player Riera for about 10 mill for their midfield so the fact they're not going for Barry doesn't chnage anything in the Alonso situation. Unfortunately we still won't sign him because he's a well known, proven player...

He was never here to kiss goodbye.

Nobody coming period!

Why do Arsenal fans (or football fans in general) have such a low level of intelligence that they come to such conclusions as these?

We know nothing until it is reported as facts so shut your mouths and stop complaining until the window slams shut. Then you can have your say.

We were never going to sign Alonso. We were going to get Inler, until he turned us down!

Why is there a large set of Arsenal supporters (I'm assuming they are English) who want us to have our own Gerrard-Lampard scenario at the club?

We need a DM, not another playmaker.

I doubt we will see any new faces now I for one am dissapointed. We look weak in comparison with Man U and Chelsea. Wenger has teased us by hinting at signings with no end product I for one feel let down. Its ironic I have never really doubted Wenger and always felt that he knew something we did not, however I now believe he is almost revelling in the fact he can put a side together on a shoestring budget that he believes can compete but I really fear for us this year and Im not convinced tonight is the walkover we are being led to expect and I do not think we have any chance of challenging for the Prem or CL. I hope im wrong and Wenger proves me wrong but I fear that should results and performances not change soon fans will revolt, and that will be a sad day for The Arsenal.

I dont think we were ever going to sign Alonso. Not getting Inler is a blow though. Who knows what Wenger has up his sleeve. He pulled Eduardo out of the bag last season so may have someone in mind. Just think he would have signed a CM by now though.

please arsene sign nigel de jong. he is strong and unbelievable.

Heres a very good reason;

Cesc Fabregas believes signing Xabi Alonso will be perfect for Arsenal.

"I'd love it! For me he would be perfect."

"What can I say? He is my friend and apart from that he is a great professional, a great passer of the ball, he works hard defensively, he's scoring goals now, he's experienced and he is only 26."

Well, we know what Fabregas wants and Arsenal are certainly lacking that "bite" so perhaps Alonso is a better choice then Gokhan Inler.

Rob, we decided not to sign Inler (if we were even after him in the first place) one or two weeks ago (Steve Stammers - ATVO fans forum) so I don't understand how you can see losing out on Inler a "blow".

We sign Xabi Alonso for 15 mil and we are 100% fine going into the season. The only thing we would need (arguably) is a change of formation to have Alex Song (a real DM) in the team by having a middle three of Alonso - Song - Fabregas and then a warrior like center half. But where do you find those?

Anonymous said...

we're looking at 4th spot and the reason is the defence, toure and gallas just aren't doing it for us

Anonymous said...

Gutted.
With Alonso I thought we could do something this season. We will simply not be good enough now. I would take 4th now.

Lads, just because average Joe Blogs (you see what I did there? Wrighty7 the blogger...) says we are not signing a player because he assumes something does not mean that the club is doing it. We could be on the phone right now with Liverpool or another club for another player for all we know.

Wenger should have signed a DM two months ago, or at least a few weeks ago. He did nothing after all of our DMs left but sign a player who never even played in Bremen for three years, and he's injured. Now he's left with no options at all and we're stuck with poor Denilson who can't defend, can't pass and can't handle any sort of pressure in midfield.

Wenger is the one to blame.

Oh great! The only reason they play well for Spain is because they have Senna behind them. We need a Senna not Alonso.

And when we start signing every players' best mate, it's a bad sign. Let's sign Loovens as he's RvP's best mate. Even better, bring back Kanu as he's Adebayor's hero!

get alonso!
i´m very pissed off!
inler turned us down, we have no chance to sign barry...
and i´m angry with van persie, adebayor and bendtner...
they don´t find the goal!
arsene please alonso and angel de maria the star of the olympics!

Funny one anon 19:27!

Gilberto was similar to Senna. Perhaps we should have kept him then!

Why are we even in the position of having to sign someone at this stage of the game. Arsene knew that Diarra had left and that Hleib and Flamini were going. He also let Gilberto go.

What is wrong with this picture? We replaced Hleib with Nasri, where are the replacements for the others?

Even if we do get someone in now they will still need time to mesh with the team because they have not had a pre-season to acclimatize.

Is this signs of senility on Arsene's part, or just one more piece to some great master strategy and plan which we mere mortals are incapable of understanding.

If someone understands the logic in this, pleaaaassseeee respond :)

Anyway, forget that Cesc and Alonso are friends.

Surely Cesc knows what he's talking about more than anyone here.

After all he has played with Alonso and AGAINST Alonso.

So if Cesc says he'd be happy for Alonso to sign thats good enough for me.

Thanks Wrighty7. But no, Gilberto was well past it, even in his captaincy you could see he was far off the pace. We either need somebody to compliment Fabregas in a 433 with Song doing the hard work (Alonso could be that man) or we need a player who is the DM in a 442 (Alonso could do that job but not like Flamini, more like Carrick - Scholes) I personally think that Song could do a great job there.

Anonymous said...

Great point there Wrighty7. Alonso would be immense for the Gunners.

I'm happy he's staying at the mighty reds.

Anonymous said...

yep gilberto well past it. alonso class act but is that what we need really. quality centre back and quality defensive midfielder. why did eboue play DM when we could have played song there. AW is losing his marbles

I believe it is wise to reserve comments until 2 September. Then I will surely have a lot to say. The only reason I'm saying this is because Arsene Wenger himself admitted that we are one body short in midfield. So all I want to see is if this 'one body' will be there come Sep 2. Then, even Wenger will know he deserves any reaction he gets from fans.
I have nothing more to say than saying I hate August and the emotions that come with it. I can't wait for Sept really.

hi! there has been 2 names innow - michael johnson of man city, and jonathan de guzman of feyernood. does anyone have concrete news or tips that de guzman will be coming in? cause i do feel that he is a good player, after watching him play in games..

Anonymous said...

Alonso is ageing and that's ok for a $1.5Mio Silvestre deal, but not for $30Mio that Liverpool are asking for, never. The DM job is extremely physical and Alonso is past it.

Guzman or Johnson or we stay the way we are with Denilson/Diaby/Song

Denilson is a disgrace he is too slow and no urgency we cannot keep him

leon said...

i never thought that he would sign him not for 16 million he only going for bargins,i think the main reason for this is expecting diaby, risisky, fab, and his new signing aurmary back to fitness within a few weeks he is not going to break the bank,if he spots a bargin then he will go for it but with 4 midfieders plus nasri arsenal are that short

Its ok, you have Eboue !! When r u ever gonna learn that your youngsters are not as good as experienced players ! You literally have one good youngster, who is fantastic, but other than that they are average ! stop having Wengers mindset and trying to have beleif, u need Senior established players, otherwise u with win nothing ... again

Alonso and cesc would be a disaster - two playmakers in one team don't work.

Gooner twa*s

The problem you guys have with signing Alonso is the original deal. Liverpool agreed that if sold for less than 16 million Euro then his old club would get 6 million Euros but if he's sold for more than 16 million Euros they get 20%. Wenger offered £10 million which is about 12 million Euros, would you take that deal, basically 6 million Euros because of the sell on clause? I certainly wouldn't. Now Juventus supposedly offered offered £13 million in the summer (just short of 16 million Euros) and were told to up their offer. So having looked at it the possibility remains he's for sale but only at £15 million (18 million Euros) which Wenger doesn't pay for anyone nowadays, so the deal won't happen.

we dont need alonso

Haven't a clue now who Wenger is gonna bring in. But I do think De Guzman would be a great signing for us, a midfielder who scores regularly from midfield and one of the most promising midfielders in Europe and by signing him Wenger is giving a chance to Denilson or Diaby. It's likely though that he'll buy some Frenchy like this Matuldi fella or Toulalan. Whoever it is he'll still be a good player.

Wrighty7 said...

Toulalan? Good shout Marko.

That would be a quiet one. Perfect for Wenger

I wouldn't be surprised if Wenger threw another signing at us on the final day of the window ala the Diarra signing last summer. Don't be shocked if 2 players came before the window closes.
