"Its my dream to play for Arsenal"

I'll be straight. I'd like Andrei Arshavin to play for Arsenal because he is a quality player.

However, despite this quality, I would be very wary of him joining if he forced the move through by striking against his current club, Zenit St Petersburg.

I've read that he has threatened to go on strike if he doesn't get his move to Arsenal. I don't like this one bit.

I agree it puts us into a strong position to gain Arshavin's signature but put yourself into a Zenit supporters shoes. Would you like your best player forcing a move through?

We Gooners wouldn't like it if he played for Arsenal and forced his way out of the club because he wanted to play for someone like Barcelona would we?

I keep thinking that whilst him on strike benefits Arsenal in the present, how do we not know that he wouldn't do the same to us in the future?

If he did sign for Arsenal I'm sure he would only have a three year contract offered to him because of Wenger's over thirty policy. We could be in the shit!

I'll agree that Arshavin has been very loyal to Zenit over the years and maybe if he did join Arsenal he would stay until the end of his career but these little things worry me!

I can't wait to hear that it is his dream to play for Arsenal. I've heard him say it about Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, AC Milan, just about every top club in Europe!

Anyway, he is a good talent and one that Arsenal could do with. I just hope that if the transfer does go through, it is on good terms and benefits both Zenit and Arsenal.

Keep it Goonerish...........

Totally agree with you Wrighty.

In fact, I'm 100% sure he would do it to us when he reaches 30 and is offered a one year deal.

You've hit the nail on the head with this.

I said the same on another blog.

good article.

Sagna also threatened to strike when Auxerre wern't too keen on him leaving...

believe me, wenger will not go and spend £15 mill + and then go and only give him a 3 year contract, thats just psychotic, i promise you if he signs it will be on a long term contract

Anonymous said...

I for one hope he doesn't sign at all. He hasn't got the stamina for the Premier League, he's more of a luxury player. We need a ball winner in midfield and a genuinely quality centre back, not some overpriced and overrated Russian.

If we do sign a creative player I hope it's a winger, as Nasri looks more comfortable playing through the middle and could adequately cover Cesc. Signing Arshavin would be a mistake, I have one question for the people saying he is quality: Exactly how many times have you seen him play? Apart from a few games at Euro 2008 and maybe the Super Cup win over United? Ok, so that's two questions, but I hope you get my point!

Arshavin is not as great as people are making out, if we waste £15 million on him I will be gutted.

I read somwere else that according to a interview he did very recently that he had been promised by Zenit that if a bid of 15mil came in he would be allowed to leave. They have since reniged hence why arshavin is threatining to strike. Aresnal have suposedly bid 10mil upfront rising to 15mil depending on games played. Zenit want more of the money up front, and want 18mil altogether. Also Arshavins agent Dennis Latcher wants a large cut off the transfer fee

arshavins agent said before it was a 5 year contract

O.K i see where your coming from Wrighty, BUT, we are talking about a player who has played all his professional career at Zenit, now that does show a degree of loyalty. From the players position i think he realises that his club are unrealistic, their astronomical demands botched up his proposed move to the scum (he he) last window. Personally i think he is starting to worry that at the peak of his career he is being tied to Zenit purely for their own (unrealistic) financial gain. But at the same time i agree with your point, player power has gotten way out of hand the last 3-4 years, just on this occasion, i think his club aren't playing fair. Good article as usual tho mate. It's rare amongst the shovels a shite on here. Keep it up.

Anonymous said...

Didn't we sign Wiltord,Flamini and Ade when they were striking and/or in dispute with their clubs?

Anonymous said...

If he signs he'll be on a 4 or 5 year contract that will then be renogotiated after 2 or 3 years.

Arsene's policy is to offer 1 year EXTENSIONS to players whose contracts expire when they are in their 30s.

It's NOT that a player reaches 30 and gets a 1 year deal. RP7 and DB10 were at the end of deals and well into their 30's when the 1 year extensions were granted.

Anonymous said...

Dead right Wrighty,.. but hopefully we will have gotten the best out him by then, and to those who are commenting saying that he is not a quality player, then you are wrong.
Arsene only deals with quality, with a bare few exceptions and i think arshavin would be a good addition and good cover for Cesc. I just hope we sign him soon, all this transfer talk is unbearable!!! Later Gooners

What Arshevin actually said was "It's my dream to play for (insert a top club name here) as long as they pay me 100,000 quids per week"

Anonymous said...

Wrighty good point and justifiable concerns but can we afford to be cautious right now
I would rather see Le Boss invest in the club and buy a potential merc then let money just pile up or spent on more 'potential' .
We have played it safe and we have played it sound and its gotten us exactly where we are
time for AW to fix whats broken and signing arsh if not anything else is a strong signal of his intent for getting us back to really competing for silverware

I think you are right, Wrighty. I have been thinking...what if he turns out to be another Reyes? Things aren't exactly what they seem to be always. I my opinion, I will really be surprised if AW brings him on. In any case, if he comes on board, it might be a move to please the fans. I hope I am proved wrong eventually.

Good comments guys!

I'll be honest. Arsenal do need a creative player like Arshavin.

We lack creativity since the injuries to Cesc, Rosicky and Theo.

HOWEVER, I think a defensive midfielder should be the priority.

The defence have hardly any protection so its no wonder we have struggled defensively this season.

Maybe Wenger will surprise us all and sign both!

Anonymous said...

i just thought to share it with u guys i just heard again from some good sources again that rosicky aint injured he is banned 4a year for taking charley he is in a rehab in checz if is true wot a waste of talent.
in arsen we trust.

Wrighty7 said...

I'm sorry mate but I can't see Rosicky as a druggie!

I see that Bullard may be on his way to Bolton for 5m...

Why not buy Bullard (the new Ray Parlour)and Hangeland with the money we would spend on Arshavin? Both have been star performers this season and would give us some much needed height, premiership experience, consistency and champs league eligibility. Im sure Arshavin would be a decent signing, but Im concerned about his work ethic and the possibility it may take months to settle in.

Wrighty7 said...

I'm friends with someone who is good pals with Jimmy bullard.

I'd be very surprised if Bullard to Bolton.

His wife doesn't want to move up north again.

Anonymous said...

it aint nothing we aint seen before, wiltord went on strike to join us as well wrighty,we should add a no barcelona clause in his contract

Anonymous said...

Ive heard that rumour about Rosicky and drugs, but i heard that the f.a had given him a 1 year ban for testing posotive at his drug test, but they arent going to release his name due to what happened to Ferdinand when he got done, e.i death threats.

Anonymous said...

There is no honour in football really, what are you gonna do?

Not only that but we dont know the ins and outs of the situation, there could be a lot of things that have happened, who knows?

What can you do, they are Ok with selling him so I dont think we should woory about it, too much.

Anonymous said...

urban myth I reckon

Anonymous said...

to wrighty i couldn't belive it my self but i think this is true u know is come from george grahams son but i cant come to terms with it but i think is true rosicky has being band 4a year and he will be back in march...
we love u arsenal
be proud be arsenal

Buy Jimmy Bullard for 5.5 million pounds! He is versatile, he has a stomach for a fight, he knows what it means to grind out results in the EPL a cold day in February. He will give us some much needed backbone in our team - at a very affordable price. What's there to think about? Buy him!

Anonymous said...

about the rosicky drug thing.. it could be true because i remember reading quite a while ago that sum1 in the arsenal squad had failed a drugs test. it was at the time denilson dissapeard off the face of the earth and wasnt on any injury list so people thought it was him. but alas denilson turned out to be injured and we heard nothing else of the drug rumour..

maybe its true..

Arshavin would be much more likely to get a 5 year deal, people get the wrong end of the stick about Wenger and over-30s. He only refuses to give players who are already over 30 a deal longer than a year, whether that's a new deal or an extension. So Arshavin could be initially contracted until he was 32, then after that he would be offered one-year extensions every year. That's if he stuck around long enough of course ^^

Anonymous said...

Don't forget the Freddie Ljungberg never got blood poisoning from a tattoo rumour Wrighty.

Anonymous said...

also remember rosicky is a bit of a party animal.. do u remember when he and other members of the czech squad were caught in a hotel room with 3 prostitutes lol

Anonymous said...

Arsene Wenger knows best. I'd prefer health over any transfers. but if we did sign someone, Bullard would be my choice and I would use the money to keep the squad together. Nasri signing was pure genius.

Anonymous said...

Arhavin is quality, Wenger knows that much, why do think we're in for him again? We just don't pay 'russian' prices. Be patient.

Anonymous said...

The policy is over 32, not over 30. And it doesn't apply to the first contract signed at Arsenal. Proof is Campbell, Silvestre, Lehmann, Gallas....

Anonymous said...

To the doubters/haters - Arshavin has played his entire pre-professional and professional career at Zenit and achieved everything he can with that club. Did we slight henry when he left. Get a grip wrighty, this is tosh. So he wants a 'dream' move. Why don't you learn russian and better yet learn that the media twists these things to create controversy.

Anonymous said...

I think that Arshavin would be a very good signing. People were talking about Arteta and how he would be a very good buy due to how versitile he is, but if you dont remember so is Arshavin. He is proven at the very highest level, euro 2008, UEFA Cup, in which, just in case you forgot, was the undisputed man of the tornament in which he absolutely shredded Bayern into peices,(whith a defence consisting of Lahm, Lucio, Demachellis, Sangol and Oddo), quite impressive?

Anonymous said...

Very good article and i agree that Arsenal do need a player like Arshavin (if we can get him for £12 million or less) but we need to think about our back bone. I dont know if any of you have seen him but i think the Miles Addison (CDM) from Derby would be a great signing. He is just like a young English Vieira. I also think that Bullard would be an amazing signing. He has good skill, good team spirit and can also knock in a few free kicks. We could probably sign all 3 of these players for £22 million ( if we have that much dosh) what do you think?

Anonymous said...

Wiltord anybody??

Oh, and he wouldn't do the same, because a) He's not getting any younger, and b) "In fact, I'm 100% sure he would do it to us when he reaches 30 and is offered a one year deal", he doesn't have to go on strike to turn down a one year extension on his contract, TopGun. But if you're 100% certain then.. Haha.

Yeah yeah, only a Youtube collection...I would love him in our shirt. Plays like Hleb.

Anonymous said...

To be honest I'd take 3 years of quality for the money... If he wants to go to Barcelona or wherever after that time then so be it - we need quality now while the kids grow up

Anonymous said...

There is no pleasing some people.

Anonymous said...

Guys - I wrote in here before that Arshavin is a DONE DEAL. It is! The only delay is NOT the fee or the players wages (which had been agreed BEFORE Xmas), but the add-ons. Zenit want a bumper payback if Arsenal win trophies and a massive 40% sell-on fee whcih Arsenal will not agree to. This will be thrashed out this weekend and Arshavin will be on your back page in an Arsenal shirt by Tuesday. He's a quality player and a nice kid. Will add some real thrust to the attack. His shirt Number will be 19 - he wanted 10 but has accepted 19 as it's 1+9

Anonymous said...

How will he get the 19 shirt you dick, that is Wilshire's shirt. Some people write on these sites as if they know everything, but really know nothing

Many ppl here hav their doubts about arshain. I think it is normal for them to think so, because they have only seen arshavin play in the euro and the zenit-manutd matchup. But arshavin is named among the top 10 players in the 'FIFA world player of the year rankings'. We, the normal football fans, did not see every match arshavin played for zenit the last year BUT the ppl from UEFA did!! Do u think they rated him in the top 10 just by watching him in the 2 euro matches?!?! think about it guys...

And wrighty might be right about arshavin being disloyal to zenit fans but what if arshavin is really an arsenal fan? After all he did say clearly it was his dream to play for arsenal. Plus everyone(other than some of the arsenal fans) have got a negative idea about arshavin's personality after he threatened zenit to leave by taking extreme measures. Do u think he will ever dare to threaten us the same way after he has already done it with zenit? C'mon he has to keep hold of his pride and prestige. He wont do it with arsenal. no way..

Anonymous said...

This Arshavin story is getting wackyer and wackyer. Now its reported that the bloke is going to pay “£3m towards his own transfer fee to insure he move to the Emirates”.

adebayor went on strike at monaco. if it means we have to pay less for someone who wants to play for us then so be it!

have to disagree. the most important thing is...IS HE THE ONE? personally i think he is overrated, but if he cud get us out of this mess, then what happens 3 years from now is irrelevant. the most important is now, to save the season. sure, he might do that to us, but if its loyalty that were looking for, me might just as well resign pascal cygan!!he wouldnt do that to us, but will we be getting anywhere? if u catch my drift. plus, in 3 years, jack will be more than ready, so that makes the argument even more irrelevant.

jeez..some people just can't be happy..everyone was crying on about how we need to add quality..when we are on the brink of signing..a player above 27 years of age..on the top ten in the world(cesc is 15)..for 15mil(less than half of what man u payed for berba)..we're still crying..we've conceded 4 goals in the last 6 bpl matches..our defence is working(hope i don't jinx it)..sure we need a viera but they don't grow on trees..arshavin more than anything is a winner and experienced..he'll definitely add something to the squad and can play in many positions for a team that always has a key player missing..some how i think he and rvp will be good together..plus he'll be able to play in the extreme cold thats always been hard for us..so stop crying..and say hello to our new no. 23..
