Patrick Vieira, back to Arsenal?

Patrick Vieira, AKA Arsenal legend, has been told he has no part in Jose Mourinho's plans at Inter Milan. Mourinho is believed to have lined up Lampard OR Essian to replace Vieira at the club. (I hope Essian leaves the Chavs, he is immense.Lampard is over-rated)

We Gooners love Vieira to bits. When he left it felt like the end of the world, but luckily him leaving meant our little gem Cesc Fabregas could break through. But although Cesc is showing how good he is, we have missed Vieira's leadership quality's and his sheer physical presence.

I read that Pompey are set to make a £4 million bid for him. £4 million!!! And with no disrespect meant to Portmouth, I just could not see him wearing a Portsmouth shirt. This is Vieira we're talking about, not Diarra.

Vieira needs to be at the top level of football. He might not be the same player he was 2-3 years ago, but I'd still say that he could play for a top club, like Arsenal. Imagine the return of Vieira. As I say, he isn't the same force he was, but he is still top class.

With Flamini gone, why not bring back Vieira? Its a no lose situation. Arsenal get a top-class defensive midfield player to mind Cesc, and we Gooners get our big name signing. I know for a fact I would be happy with him coming back to end his career here.

Here's a thought. I wrote a piece about Dennis Bergkamp one day becoming manager of Arsenal. How about Vieira? Bring him back, play him for a couple of seasons and let him manage the club when Le Boss calls it a day.

His experience cannot be questioned and that's what our squad need right now. He has the big match temperament we need and he will inspire our squad, because he is a winner.

It may seem like a backward move but I see no reason why it couldn't work. I'd love it, and you, my fellow Gooners, know that you would love it too.

Altogether now.......Vieirrrrrrrrrrrrrrra........woooooooooooooaaaahhhhhh......Vieirrrrrrrrrrrrra

Keep it Goonerish................

When Vieira was still at Arsenal, they tried playing him and Cesc together and it didn't work out so well. Neither of them took the defensive role since both were used to having a defensive midfielder beside them that covered up behind them. Don't really think it would be any better this time around. :-/

On the other hand it would be nice to have him at the club so Cesc could rest a game here and there. Also, can you imagine Viera on the pitch again against Manure? :D lol You CAN'T say you wouldn't love to see that! :D hehe

I think that Vieira could take the defensive role now. With his experience he could play it with ease.

To be fair I'm not normally one for this sort of thing, but bringing Vieira back would really give the squad the morale boost they need. Were not lacking in talent, but the experience is needed and PV4 is that!!!!!

It would work as i do think Viera would be great as a DM, i dont see how it would be a problem as there is no way he could come back and try to dictate anything.

I disagree with you wanting essien to leave Chelsea. If you want to be the best you must beat the best! so may Drogba, Essien and Ronaldo all stay because that will make it very sweet when we take care of them.

a very tasty prospect, sadly i havent seen much of him since he left and the champions league performance didnt do him any favors,

its hard not to look with a sentimental eye and welcome him back to the fold.

still id rather we got him for 4 mill than pompey,

Good post, imagine Paddy back, playing at the ground he never got a chance to play regulary on.

Anonymous said...

If Vieira came back Gallas would give the armband straight back...he would certainly tidy everything up and there would be no silly tantrums like Birmingham!! I for one would love to see Pat come back....Bring back Vieira whooooooaaaa.. Bring back Vieira whooooooaaaa!!!

Anonymous said...

I loved Paddy but he is a shadow of the player he was when he was with us and he is injury prone. When added to his wage demands would it really be a risk worth taking?

Anonymous said...

80k per week = YES

Anonymous said...

Vieira is a shadow of his old self and won't be needed, he's in phisical decline & injury prone , AW could've bought him back 2 years ago when he went to Inter but decided against it and rightly so IMO, so no it won't happen but what a player he was for the Arsenal........ LEGEND

Anonymous said...

Surely AW should bring him back in a role like Makelele does for Chelski, playing sparingly combined with a coaching role!?!! Then join the backroom team when he retires in a couple of years....

Anonymous said...

Sorry, but thats a really stupid idea. We're a completely different team now and Fabregas is at the heart of it. Vieira had his time.

Anonymous said...

idiotic post, one step forward 2 steps back.

Anonymous said...

Evening Wrighty!

I wouldn't have him back, I couldn't stomach it... seeing him play like a shadow of his former self would be too upsetting!

Bring Gattuso back to Britain if we want some experience!

Good post as normal and top shout on Essien, what a player...

Anonymous said...

clueless post...evidenced by touting the legen that is DB10 as a future manager. ce it Who will manage the champion's league away games?

Anonymous said...

This is ridiculous, there are about 3 better options in our team at the moment let alone the entire transfer market. Bottom of the barrel stuff here.

I said this on another blog a few days ago and it's good to see that people share my thoughts, he never used to play the defensive role but he can now, because he's just a great all round midfielder. Vieira alongside Cesc, now thats what dreams are made of, an it would be a fucking nightmare for every1 else in the prem. We need a big, fuck off geezer at the heart of our midfield, someone that would make Fat Frank shit himself, ok, Keanes gone, but I'd still love to see him tearing through united, throwing Shrek and co. to the side, and as I remember saying before, he can show Abou Diaby what people whant when they call him the next Vieira, he can learn from the man himself. Anyone down at the Emirates fancy some of La Grande Saucisse?
hehe nice one, once again wrighty.

i can see the logic in this idea but i dont think it will ever happen (can you really see wenger paying over half a million pounds for a 32 yr old?) and more importantly i dont think it would as vieira doesnt have the legs for it any more. in the season before he was sold he couldnt keep pace with our football and i can only imagine him getting slower.

Anonymous said...

stupid muggy post - why not u say??? u think the arsenal board are gonna allow a 31 year old to come back being on 100k or so wages, wtf are u smoking fellah

Anonymous said...

Name me the three better options at Arsenal right now

Anonymous said...

Wrighty,

I think you need to do a post for people who are not aware that Europe is accessible by Train and car. A plane is not the only option.

3 better options at Arsenal right now... do me a favour.

Flamini isn't even a better option to Paddy according to the French coach!

Some people eh? Only happy when they are slagging someone down...

Anonymous said...

Don't be stupid. We have Diaby if only AW would play him in the Viera role. imagine how disruptive bringing back PV or TH14 would be. We saw there best and dont want to see them half the men they were

Anonymous said...

Nigel de Jong looks ace against Italy. He is a class player.

Wrighty7 said...

I know Pedro, write a post and you get abused!!

Its mental mate.

Anonymous said...

I know Wrighty... you just don't need it!

Anon... I said earlier I wouldn't want to see anything other than a 100% Vieira, but you have to say, Diaby isn't even a 40% Paddy at the moment.

He shows moments of Magic, but not enough takeover from Flamini.

He will have to make a massive jump next year to fill the current void. If he did make the jump... he'd be a better player than the Flamster, he has a lot more skill and a good eye for goal.

Great post as usual

Wrighty7 said...

I think Vieira could work with Cesc at Arsenal.

I understand your concern Pedro about him not being the same as you remember him.

chris said...

we need to cesc to start scoring goals like he did in the early part of the season, a PV4 player will allow him to go forward again, but does that mean we can look to bertie?

Wrighty7 said...

I dont think Vieira and Cesc would have worked 2-3 years ago. But I do now.

Vieira isn't as dynamic as he was, but I'm sure he could adapt his game to a more defensive frame of mind.

Anonymous said...

lets go for orlando engelaar..he impressed me very much tonight against quality midtfielders such as pirlo and gattuso...but he's 28 (soon 29) so i guess Wenger wont sign him..but he has the height (1.96) and the build for PL..and he should be avaliable for around £ 5-6-7 m as schalke are in for him

Wrighty7 said...

He did look good. And has a big physical frame

Anonymous said...

AW would never sign PV on such high wages. Vieria might even lower his wages so he can still play for a top team at 32.

I can see it work if PV stays defensive coz he wouldn be able to run up and down like before BUT his time is up i think for AFC n diaby is there to fill his boots.

AW said Diaby is his new vieria. Also it would be hard to see Vieria not the player he used to be. AW doesn't bring back players does he?

Wrighty7 said...

For me Diaby is no Vieira.

I think its unfair to even compare them.

Sure they look the same, but Vieira had EVERYTHING and more.

Diaby has great potential but needs to learn when to release the ball at the right time and how to tackle.

Question:

What trophies have arsenal won since pat left in 2005?

That's right, none.

Unknown said...

Viera would be a massive boost. Yes, he is notthe player he was, BUT, what about playing him as the big central defender. Thuram was converted to from central midfeild when he was at AC to defender at the later part of his career. I do not know how many of you remember Arsene's old comments on Viera,in that, he would make a great central defender at the late stage of his career. It would be a perfect position for him, haveing lost some of his speed and energy, he is big, strong and reads the game well. Viera..Oh Oh ....our new central defender.

MeteorMonster said...

How soon we forget that PV actually played DM until Gilberto assumed that role.

If he were to lower his salary demands he could make a valuable contribution not only on the field but in helping the young DM's, whether it be Diaby, Denilson, Song or Djourou, blossom and provide some well needed leadership.

He could work paired with Fab as long as we utilize Walcott,Vela or Nasri (hopefully he will sign soon)as an attacking option on the wing to provide the pace to restrict defenses playing us too high.

Anonymous said...

The fact still remains that we haven't won anything since Vieira left.

Anonymous said...

Vieira would be a short term fix, which is exactly what Arsenal need. We need to sign of couple of old players (Henry and Vieira) to bring back a trophy and get the rest of the squad into good habits.

When Vieira left i said we would need another big guy in the midfield (central, nowhere else) to provide protection for the centre backs because Cesc isnt that type of player, he goes in for the ball, but hes no Vieira. Interesting about him coming back as a CB. I'd be intrigued if wenger did do that, that should be our next signing, if not Vieira, (although I'd put him top of the list) then a player in that mould. Not a young one either, a proven central midfield general.
I don't understand people these days, all they wanna do is abuse.
Don't listen to 'em Wrighty,
Great blog, again.

Flamini was great last season for us - but people on here think Vieira is washed up etc etc zzzzzz

Funny how France have packed Flam off for the 2nd time now, there desperate for PV4 to boss the midfield with his experience!!

Good enough for France but not Arsenal??!!!

Anonymous said...

I wonder if those who want Paddy back actually saw him play in his final couple of seasons. He was virtually shot then and certainly is now. Paddy was arguably our best ever midfielder but he peaked in 2001. His energy levels have slumped and he is increasingly injury-prone. Paddy looked disinterested at time towards then end of his career and it was good business to sell him. In fact we tired to sell him the year before to Real for 22m but it fell through. To bring him back would be a huge mistake. In fact it would be madness as he would be a liability.

I usually like your posts Wrighty but this is sheer lunacy. Vieira back – NO WAY!!

is this really how low we have sunk? we have a key position to fill, and you are thinking of getting our ex captain back well past his prime? we should get someone as good as paddy was if we want to win anything, not how he is now. portsmouth maybe, Arsenal no, no matter how much we loved him we have to aim higher than that.

Depressing to even consider it.

1979gooner said...

no way in my opinion,

he's not the same player, on off injuries are a big problem, massive wages and he's in his thirties

Anonymous said...

Don't be so silly, too injury prone, over the hill, wages a problem, we look to the future not the past, how daft can fans get.
Wishful thinking me thinks

hahahaa! yeah why not? trying to hide the fact you cant afford anyone good so u run an article claiming all gooner fans would be happy if vieira was this summers big signing??? hahaha!! why not try tempt kenny sampson back??? hahahahaha!!! finally admitting yr 2nd rate!!!!!!

Rather than sign Viera, we should be looking at players like Orlando Engelaar, who are already a DM and showed that they can play at a high level (Holland V Italy) the other night, he's big and quick and very good on the ball.
This Gyuy looks much more like a Wenger signing and would truely improve the squad.
Most important he doesent play at a big Dutch club and wouldn't cost that much.

Anonymous said...

To you idioctic twats that are coating this post off Fuck Off.

Great call Wrighty it's an Idea that has pro's and Con's but we need desperatley a leader at the club someone who knows what it means to play for the Arsenal to teach the younger kids . If it was in a player/coach role providing the kids with the know how on how to hold on to a lead against united chelsea and liverpool. That man could well be Paddy .All the true gooners who saw him play at highbury know that he knew what the Arsenal was all about . Great post Great Idea I don't normally comment on these blogs but thought it needed to be said

Anonymous said...

in fact Vieira is good player we need him back in midfielder so that arsenal will stand on his foot it u know what mean.

Anonymous said...

they say u should never go back but we havnt 1 a trophy since he last kicked a ball for arsenal literally so it worth a shot would be delighted to have the legend back

Anonymous said...

"we need winners"
true and fair comment but we also saw the likes of pires, wiltord, henry, campbell, ljungberg etc. all follow him aswell which really left wholes in the side.
when we had gilberto before he was sacked as the captain and eventually left, we was all rosey at the top of the league, he was playing defensive and fabregas was going forward adn scored about 10-15 goals that season. then gallas was captain and we ended up finishing 3rd. Vieira is very much like gilberto so bringing him back would be a great option in my opinion.

Anonymous said...

i think wrighty7 is righty in this post ;)

arsenal are crying our for an experianced leader and for a player built like a brick sh*thouse to prevent teams like stoke kicking us off the field. with vieira we kill 2 birds with one stone. we might have to pay a little more in wages than some people at arsenal would like for a 33 year old. but most repports have said it would be a pay as you play deal so if hes injured it wouldnt rinse the wage bill. also we would get him for almost nothing from inter so what we save on transfer fee we can use to cover a slightly excessive wage packet. also its a 1 year contract. if hes out injured and doesnt life up to his former reputation then wenger can simpley let him go or offer a coaching role.

people who slate this idea simple of the basis that hes A) been at arsenal before, well yeh...but what does that matter? u think man u wudn't take ronaldo back given the chance? and B) hes too old, well true of a pace player. but pat is so much more than just a pace player. he could play dm or cb with ease and could just provide the missing piece of the puzzle we have all craved!

wooooooah vieeeeeeira! woooooooah!!!
