Cristiano Ronaldo would have been even BETTER had he joined Arsenal and not Manchester United

I always had Cristiano Ronaldo down as a show pony when he first joined Manchester United but he has improved so much.

He has developed into one of the best players in the world and a huge amount of credit must go to Alex Ferguson for the way Ronaldo has been nurtured into this fine player.

I read today that Ronaldo was an inch away from joining Arsenal. I will upset a lot of United fans by saying this (I don't care) but I think Ronaldo would have been an even BETTER player than he is now had he joined Arsenal and Manchester United.

I say this for one reason, Arsene Wenger.

There is no one better in world football at developing talent than our gaffer. The amount of young talent that Arsene Wenger has brought through is astounding.

Sometimes the youngsters leave Arsenal but look at the amount of other clubs who have benefited from players being developed by Wenger and Arsenal.

There are a number of players littered around who came through at Arsenal but didn't make the grade at the club. The standard of Arsenal's youngsters is amazing.

This isn't a pop at Ferguson (who I've mentioned has done a great job with Ronaldo) but imagine if Cristiano Ronaldo had that type of mentoring from Arsene Wenger.

He wouldn't just be European Footballer of the Year, he would be World Player of the Year too.

Ronaldo is a fantastic player who (frighteningly) will get even better. I don't doubt though that under Wenger's tutelage he would be even better than that.

Keep it Goonerish....................

ronaldo would of been a sensation for us,

and another thing, he wouldnt want to go to madrid either.

he'd of never dreamed of leaving us

how would he have coped with the rooney winking saga if he was at arsenal?

Anonymous said...

LOL Jonjon.

Pires, Henry, Vieira, Kanu, Campbell, Adebayor, Hleb, Flamini, Plenty of players wanted to leave you. Ronaldo would have been no different.

Infact, I think Wenger will have happily let Ronaldo go after the world cup incident in 2006, letting him go to Madrid and ruin his career. He would have had no clue how to handle it. When Ferguson wants to keep a player he does so at all costs. He fights tooth and nail to keep them. See Ronaldo last summer and in 2006. Wenger on the other hand lets players go when they want to such as Hleb and Flamini.

I HAVE TO TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH YOU ON THIS, AS MUCH AS I AM A ARSENAL FAN, BUT RONALDO WOULD NOT BE THE PLAYER HE IS IF HE WAS AT ARSENAL.

I SAY THIS SIMPLY BECAUSE AT UTD:

1- HE'S ALLOWED TO PLAY WHEREVER HE PLEASES IN ORDER TO WIN THE GAME FOR UTD.

2- HE'S ALLOWED TO SHOW BOAT (USE HIS SKILLS AND TRICKERY).

3- IF HE PLAYED AT ARSENAL, HE'S ATTITUDE WOULD STINK, AS HE WOULD THINK HE'S BETTER THAN ALL THE KIDS AT ARSENAL, CAUSING CONFLICTS IN THE DRESSING ROOM AND ON FIELD, WHEREAS AT UTD, HE HAS LEVEL HEADED, MATURE PEOPLE AROUND HIM.

LETS USE ROSICKY FOR A PRIME EXAMPLE, BEFORE WE SIGNED HIM, HE USED TO LOVE SHOOTING FROM DISTANCE FOR FUN, BUT SOON AS HE COMES TO ARSENAL, HE WASN'T THE SAME PLAYER WE SAW IN THE WORLD CUP!!

DONT BE FOOLED RONALDO WOULD PROBABLY HAVE BEEN A SUPERSTAR AT ARSENAL, BUT JUST FEEL HE WOULD BE RESTRICTED AS TO WHAT HE CAN DO.

I DON'T BELIVE WENGER LIKE TRICKERY AND SKILLFUL PLAYERS AT ARSENAL, AS HE BELIEVES IN TWO TOUCH FOOTBALL OTHERWISE, HE'S HAD BOUGHT A FEW SKILLFUL PLAYERS.

BUT BACK TO ONE POINT THAT ANGERS ME ABOUT MR WENGER IS HIS STINGYNESS, HE WAS TRYING TO PAY TRAMP CHANGE FOR RONALDO, WHEREAS UNITED PAID OUUTRIGHT THE MONEY SPORTING LISBON WANTED. TAKE NOTE MR WENGER, YOU HAVE TO SPEND MONEY TO MAKE MONEY

any1 disagree holla at me

I don't agree sadly. I think one of the reasons why Ronaldo is succesful there is because red nose gives him a free role while with us, Wenger would have stuck him on the wing all the time.

you should have held off on this post till after the World player of the Year award comes out. Once he wins that your argument will become even more naive.

mm lets see

Ronaldo surrounded by world class players at Man Utd

OR

Ronaldo surrounded by a bunch of kids who's title challenge fades by October

Its a no brainer

Wrighty7 said...

Yeah, a bunch of kids who still beat you the other week!

Anonymous said...

Naturally, you're completely right. Wenger has most certainly developed as many talents to as high a level as Ferguson, I mean, Fabregas and Walcott definitely rival Giggs, Beckham, Scholes, the Nevilles, Ronaldo, Rooney. Just because Wenger has more youngsters playing for him doesn't mean he's better with youngsters. The only reason is because his more experienced players have become disillusioned and have left- Henry, Vieira et al. United kept Giggs, Scholes, Neville etc, meaning Nani, Anderson, Rafael get less game time than your boys. They'll still turn out to be better players.

Anonymous said...

Wrighty, you deserved to beat us. You played well but as even your own fans say, what kind of team are you, that you can only turn it up for the big games? After beating us, you then go and lose to Villa at home.

Anonymous said...

Yeah...a bunch of kids who are battling with Villa for 4th place as opposed to realistically challenging for the title. Nobody can question Wenger's pedigree at bringing young talent through, but a personality like Ronaldo's needed taming, and Wenger would have failed miserably. And whoever the mug is who commented about Ronaldo never wanting to leave for Madrid...Patrick Vieira anyone? He was gagging to leave year after year. Your right, Ronaldo wouldn't have wanted to leave for Madrid last year...he would've already been long gone to Madrid a year previous. And before you mention Fabregas, I give him 2 more years at Arsenal...

Wengers hand were tied with flamini and hleb, he didnt have a choice.

all the other players left when wenger decided they could and after he got their best years out of them.

madrid was after vieira season after season and wenger kept hold of him until he was 30.

ronaldo will leave manutd next year.

manutd always lose their players in their prime, stam, beckham, van horseface, kanchelskis, all left when playing their best football.

so anon 18;53 your point holds no water.

Wrighty7 said...

Anon 19:10,

You are right mate. Thats a fair comment.

Anonymous said...

Useless conjecture and hypothesising. He'd be a very different sort of player. He's been the focal point, or the lens, if you prefer, of United's attacking play for the last two seasons, and has thrived under that system which simply would not exist at Arsenal, the players he plays with would be completely different etc. I certainly don't think he'd score 40+ goals from a midfield position if he was an Arsenal player, though.

Wrighty7 said...

Agree Jonjon,

Look at the players who have left Arsenal.

Not many better their careers after leaving the club.

This is not a pop at United. I just feel that Ronaldo would have developed even better at Arsenal under Wenger.

Anonymous said...

What a stupid article. Fergie has nurtured far more world class talent than Arsene Wenger. Ridiculous article, ridiculous author, rediculous site

Wrighty7 said...

AusGunner,

I'd argue that Arsenal create as many chances as United do.

Ronaldo could score plenty of goals for Arsenal.

Anonymous said...

Agree with that Wrighty.

mj has got a point, i mean can't really get better than best in the world...he wouldve wanted more money at arsenal or left for spain a lot earlier, like they all do at the emirates. thats just reality. I think overall we're better off without him.

Anonymous said...

What's Division 2 like?

Just wondering as I havne't seen Arsenal play in it in my lifetime.

Wrighty7 said...

You are not likely too anytime soon either mate!

Anonymous said...

re JonJon. He had a choice with both Flamini and Hleb. He could have told Hleb he wasn't for sale at any price and it was only a few extra K for Flamini's contract. Wenger got arrogant and thought you could cope without them and you are paying for it now

Anonymous said...

if Ronaldo did become the best player in the world also at Arsenal, he wouldn't be happy with the 35-80k you pay players and would soon want out.

Like someone said, after the world cup situation, I bet Wenger would have let Ronaldo go and not persuaded him to stay like Ferguson

Anonymous said...

nah im glad we didnt get ronaldo coz then id never have got the chance to see gael clichy have him like he is gonna at old trafford this season

Anonymous said...

and dont forget we nearly signed ronaldinho before even the brazil boss knew who he was as well,if it wasnt for them visa wankers

Anonymous said...

How long is the Glazier hedge funds going to subsidize, your pretty boys wages then?

Anonymous said...

yeh he would have been good for us,

the main reason hes so good isnt because of his dribbling or anything, cos messi is massively better than ronaldo in that department,
its his movement off the ball and excellent consistency of finishing
hes also an extremely powerful athlete, but im not sure they would have built him up like that at arsenal - i can imagine wenger being cautious about too much upper body work etc

Anonymous said...

ronaldo chose man utd because he didnt wanna be the only homo in the dressing room

Anonymous said...

Ronaldo wouldn't be the same player. Heck...Wenger would have folded earlier and would have forced to sell him to Madrid. He just doesn't have the balls to keep his top players like Fergie does unfortunately.

I would have loved Ronaldo here...just not meant to be though.

Anonymous said...

Nah anon 20;35

your facts are wrong

wenger didnt have a choice with hleb or flamini

hleb moved because of the webster clause, barca bought out hlebs contract, and flamini went because he wouldnt sign a new contract until the end of the year, which he then signed for milan. flamini wasnt even a first teamer before last year, no one knew he was going to perform like that, he was going to join birmingham at the start of the season, but decided to stay and run out his contract. he made his mind up before we offered a new contract.

I don't think Ronaldo is as good as people make him out be. I don't see him in the same league as Messi, Ronaldino, Kaka, Old Ronaldo, Fab or Henry. Only reason people think he is good is because of players around him, such as Roony, Tavaze... To me, the best players right now are Messi, David Villa, Febrigase. Best player for Man U are Moony, Tezmaina, all time best player in my time, Giggs. Did he not miss penalty in last years Champion League final against Chalsea.

WENGER IS GOOD AT SPOTTING TALENTS BUT FERGUSON IS BETTER AT NURTURING THEM. You can say a lot of players came to arsenal and succeed under wenger. However there are also players that went backwards since joining arsenal. I am sure walcott would have been a better player under ferguson. he's been here for 3 years now but he is still struggling to hold down a first team place. yes, he did play regularly before he got injured this season. but do you think he would have played that much if rosicky's fit? wenger has never been too much of a 'teacher-figure' like ferguson but he is more of a thinker and observer. i am not slatting le boss here, i am just trying to take of my arsenal tinted glasses and speak the truth.

Anonymous said...

He ain't good enough to wear "THE PINKIE HIGH HEELS".

Anonymous said...

oh, as much as i hate to say this, ronaldo is certainly one of the best players in the world at the moment. the amount of goals and assists last season coming from a winger speaks for itself. i know some people will kill me for saying this but i think he is better than kaka ever was. kaka is overrated because he is a milan player. also, i hate it when people say david villa is world class. he is good no doubt about that but he is hardly as good as torres or henry during his time at arsenal. messi and ronaldo are clearly two of the best players at the moment. i feel that messi can do a whole lot better if he is at arsenal. he can certainly challenge ronaldo for top honours. messi is a more complete player than ronaldo but ronaldo is at a club which brings out the best of a player while messi is at a club which kills a player.

Anonymous said...

Disagree with you one hundred percent and even if he played with the Invincibles would never have been allowed to score 42 goals. He may have been less selfish but that's it.
He gets so much freedom and license at United he wouldn't get at Arsenal plus the way they play with two in front of the back four, counter etc.
Need a bit more work on your tactical understanding mate but good try.

leon said...

its very difficult to say both fergison and wenger are exptional at sptting and neturing talent,i am an arsenal fan but i must disagree i think wenger could don any better

Anonymous said...

Look how many games Walcott has played in 3 years and compare that with how many games Ronaldo played in his first 3 years.

This idea that Wenger is the master of developing youth, better than Ferguson, is one I don't really understand. Granted, Wenger plays a lot of young players, but they don't win anything. His young team have never won anything. What have any of the players who he's brought through won?

Ferguson's young team won the Double in their first season.

Ronaldo is officially the best player in Europe, unofficially the best in the World... and to think that Wenger could have made him better than he is now is arrogant beyond belief. I won't feign surprise at that one though.

What sickens my so much is the ignorance of the united fans commenting here!! i mean your current crop of kids arent really unearthed gems like the arsenal ones are!! you paid top dollar for ALL of them cause they were known and famous!! arsene on the other hand finds who you have no idea about and turns them into world star players!! plus hleb left cause he pussied out after watching eduardos horror tackle so not much wenger can do there!! and flamini was an arse who wanted a helluva lot of dosh which we didnt wanna give!! plus vieira only left cause wenger allowed him to which 'hurt' him and we all agree that he was never the same player he was after he left....same with thierry who played all of his good football at arsenal...pires was past it before he left us and no1 can argue about freddy! MANURE on the other let the likes of becks, ruud and many others go at their peek!! and i read some idiot also say in the comments that the likes of nevlle giggs and scholes still being at united shows that he's good at keeping his experienced players....news flash...NOONE WOULD WANT THEM ANYWAY!!! they're SHITE!!Gooner4Life

Richardson's growth quickly cam to a hault

walcott is a monumental fuck-up by wenger
complete waste of time, hes only ever gonna be a decent player for us whereas we have players in the reserves who are gna be 10 times better
he says merida isnt physically ready for example, but was walcott physically ready when he came to the 1st team??

i do think ferguson would have made more of him tbh, he would have made him improve his body strength, but he still wouldnt be that good - he doesnt have the brain for it, hes only good in certain situations

Anonymous said...

and hes nothing like richardson

something like agbonlahor perhaps

Anonymous said...

No.Totally disagree with your post.Wenger's tactic is never about one man show. Its about team passing and movement. If ronaldo joined arsenal he wont be able to do his tricks and stuff on the pitch. He would just be about passing and passing. He wont be able to take a shot whenever he likes. But in manu, they let players to show off their skills and tricks whenever they can. They are more of a direct footballing team then we are.The players are trained in a way thats suitable for players like ronaldo and rooney. While ours are more on the overall technical stuff on the pitch.

I'm a neutral and I think it's very questionable to say that Ronaldo could play any better than he already does. I say this despite the respect I have for Wenger's ability to develop players. If we are to look at the present only - you have to say that Ronaldo made absolutely the correct choice in signing with United in that United more than Arsenal strive for trophies - and win them - year after year, while Arsenal and Wenger have chosen a more moderate and patient policy that in the short-term yields no trophies and only occassionally earns outbursts of praise from the purists for the quality of their football. I think it's less likely that Ronaldo would have become Best Player in the World if he had signed with Wenger.

The first thing Wenger would do to Ronaldo IF he come to Arsenal is to fix his cocky attitude.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my children.
I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said
"You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She
put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.

She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!
