Good luck Liverpool. (not that you need it)

Let me start by saying good luck to Liverpool for the rest of the tournament.

This Champions League tie has produced two games of pulsating football that has really boiled down to the luckier of the teams progressing through to play Chelsea in the semi-finals.

Please dont anyone think this is sour grapes but in reality the tie has been decided by two penalty decisions. Arsenal didn't get their's, Liverpool did.

I'm gutted right now, but I'm more gutted for Theo Walcot. The run that he produced to set up the second Arsenal goal deserved more than a defeat. That run was career defining and we should be talking about that being his glory moment. The moment Theo arrived. He has really been the shining light in Arsenal's recent demise.

I'll write a bigger article about tonight's events tomorrow. I'm too disappointed to write a more detailed right now.

So Liverpool, I hope you win it now. You don't need luck, you have that in abundance (please dont take that as being bitter!) Tonights game will be the best in the Champions League this year and congratulations for winning and well done. I'm gutted but proud of my club.

Keep it Goonerish......

You sound very bitter. But truth be told Arsenal played very well and no Liverpool fan would have begrudged them the victory.

But...

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Liverpool won baby, yeah!

cheers mate. Totally agree with your comments. Its easy to say now but when the draw was made i said i hoped whoever won out of us would go on to win it.

I understand ur frustration Wrighty7. It came down to the penalty decisions and thats the way football go's. We could easily be in the position Liverpool find themselves in. Good luck Liverpool.

Im a Liverpool fan and I genuinely feel sorry for Arsenal. You dont deserve this but thats football.

What a match. I am a Liverpool fan, and completely agree, the outcome of this one really did come down to lucky breaks. For the first half an hour Arsenal were devastating. To be honest I thought we going to get battered at one point. We stuck it out though, and with Torres up front there's always the chance of a goal out of nothing.
Credit to Walcott also he was terrifying every time he got to run at our defenders.
All in all a great advert for English football.

The penalty given to Liverpool tonight was the correct dicison, I'm just gutted we didn't get our's in the first leg.

Liverpool fan here..

There was nothing in it..perhaps the crowd was the deciding factor.

Fair play to Arsenal who played, as always, magic football.

Anonymous said...

as a liverpool fan I agree with your sentiments. was really worried the way you started and you fully deserved the lead. We finally got control of the game and were looking good but for a moment of brilliance from Walcott. we got the penalty which I believe was a correct decision and you were unlucky to get one at the Emirates. Its good to see an article without any whinging which is credit to you and a good reflection of Arsenal fans. Thank god there is no Mourinho to persify bitterness every year (or ManU fans ....yet)

Anonymous said...

it was men versus boys out there tonight.. no question..

to say that Liverpool were unlucky is really insulting to them.. they owned the second half.. Walcott's goal, brilliant as it was, was a bolt from the blue.. (yes i'm crediting Walcott with that goal before anyone corrects me..)

had Arsenal got the peno last week then that would have made the score 5-4 to Liverpool on aggregate so that's not an arguement..

Arsenal, and Senderos in particular, were punished clinically for poor defending..

better team went through overall in my opinion..

Let me start by saying that I think Wenger has been the best manager in the EPL for the last 15 years and that he is without doubt the best manager the Club has ever had!

But this man is no longer taking us forward, he threw away the Carling Cup in the Second leg, one game away from a final, he threw away the FA Cup at Anfield, he conceded the league on Saturday by playing several reserve players. He consistently plays players out of position and he has brought in players who are not good enough, all this despite us paying the highest season ticket prices in Europe and the Club announcing record profits. He keeps buying 15 and 16 year olds and I am sick of it, it's time for the Club to act.

Saying we have had a better season than was anticipated is short sighted, we should be challenging for the EPL every year and we have not got near it for 3 years. We have sold players to Valencia (Edu), Inter Milan (Vieira), Barcelona (Henry) and replaced them with cheap also rans.

Not to mention the indiscipline our players show - Gallas, Eboue, Adebayor, Bendtner.

HE MUST CHANGE HIS POLICY IN THE SUMMER AND BUY READY MADE PLAYERS OR FACE THE CONSEQUENCES!!!!

Peter Frojdfeldt- Gave a penalty for a pull on babels shirt by fabregas outside the box/ a nudge by toure though contact was essentially zero.
Pieter Vink- Failed to give a stonewall penalty for us when Kuyt pulled down Hleb in the box;
Mark Clattenburg- Assistant should take blame for offside decisions which allowed drogbas second goal against arsenal
Mark Halsey-Again linesman must take blame as Tuncay was allowed to play on though offside, providing goal for Aliadiere
Mike Dean- ‘penalty’ given against clichy for tackle in 90th min, though he clearly won the ball and played none of the man

northbank said...

Wasn't luck we wern't good enough at the back. toure and phil were shit. we couldn't deal with the long ball yet again.

Ade was also poor offside 8 times in the first 10 mins,
and his first touch was crap.

anon 22:35 you are a cock! Real fans don't have second teams you prick.

great referee until the 86th min. But as always the scousers are the lucky s#@% of b&%#@.. just like at emirates. but hey, we've got senderos, not to mention eboue-that w....r. tragic outcome

Anonymous said...

2 or 3 seasons ago arse vs spurs.....arse win 3-1...second goal was clearly off side an third goal was a penalty that arse players dived......so dont give us this shit now about oh the refree

BitimarDerbatov, the agg score would have been 5-4 but i should imagine that the fifth goal wouldn't have happened as Arsenal wouldn't have had to commit so many players forward. It was a one against one, would that have happened if the agg was 4-4 in the last minute? Doubt it knob jockey.

Anonymous said...

credit to both teams for a top tie. no-one can live with arsenal when they are in top gear but (certainly at the moment) that is only in short spells. We were on top for last hour with exception of adebayor chance and goal. liverpool had far more in the tank than arsenal and rafas rotation looks like it may take us to another final. good luck against mancs at weekend. Oy Spuds one trophy doesn't cover up the fact that you will finish mid-table in the season you was supposed to over take Arsenal in the league. Yes you have won a trophy, well fucking done! And yes, Arsenal won't win anything this season but in all honesty who's position would u rather been? You are a long way away from even challenging for a top 4 place that u covet so much. We have only minor detail to becoming a major force!

Wrighty7 said...

I must add that the Liverpool fans are a credit to their club and I appreciate that none are gloating. Top stuff.

Congratulations on your pretty triangles in midfield - I really enjoyed tham! You might want to reflect on how unfair it is that teams should actually want to win trophies. (If you look it up on Google you might find what a trophy actually is what is it now 24 years since you one?)

The usual sad, complaining, bitter nonsense from a team who don't have the mentality to win trophies anymore. Enjoy your moral vistory.....I'll have to endure our actual victory...

Well I normally don't come on these sites and comment but I have to say all of the ranting is wrong. Even though we lost we tried our guts out. And the match was overall a fantastic cup tie a great advert for The EPL I just hope the Pool do in the chavs again. I do agree with some of the crits in terms of quality rather than effort and commitment which I cant fault. Senderos just isn't good enough, Eboue is an absolute disaster always screws up a good move at the finish and there are a couple of guys who although when on song are great but always seem to be injured ( RVP and T R ) . We hugely miss Sagna who in my mind has been a revelation this season( and I wouldn't put him in the sick note category). And we unfortunately lost Eduardo just when he was coming good. The fantastic news is that Theo is really growing with every appearance and will be a superstar and should start every time in front of Eboue. We now need a couple of good buys in the summer, a world class centre back and a world class striker( in the Torres mold). I have high hopes we will keep the Flamster and look forward to Carlos and Fran joining in for next season. So please Mr Wenger ( who I still think is the best thing to happen to the club in my 50 years of support) sell the lame ducks and spend some really big cash on some world beaters to compliment what is in no doubt a potentially great team

Wrighty7 said...

So it was only the media that said Spur's would finish 4th? Don't make me laugh! Why is it I have three £50 pound bets with three mates (SPUDS!) about Spur's finishing in the top four? Why is it my barber bet me a free haircut if Spur's dont come 4th or I pay double if they do? Face it, Spur's have embarrassed u Spuds with their poor league position and hide behind ur one trophy in 9 years! How many league titles u won?

Anonymous said...

The main reason why Arsenal lost this tie is Senderos. take him out and put Toure back in his position. Is Senderos Cygan in disguise

Anonymous said...

yes we had a chance after fin 4th for 2 season...an this season is a joke an we can admit it hopfully nex seasn can be diff ....the prob...is that aser fin 4th for 2 season i wouldnt call thet successful for a top club an 4 years with a trophy only half way bud.....ye dont exactly challegaed on all 4 frounts hvave ye ....NO.......at least we have won something more then ye can say...ye ad yer time..move over scum

i dont understand the spuds...I ahve yet to see a gooner gloating on spuds sites about their loss in any european cups..maybe because dont give a crap...point is spuds have nothing better to do but watch the gooners on the glorious CL nights...because their team can never reach there ...wow I think the spuds have nothing better to do but amire arsenal and hoping and praying their lose ...somehow its more entertaining than see thir pathetic spurs team win....face it spuds and show some class...

Can't even keep hold of your best players, what does that say about you as a club?!

So fuck off you annoying prick. :)

Anonymous said...

Rather Sad that spurs have to live vicariously through the failings of their rivals...perhaps if they could experience the champions league themselves it would allow them to feel that their own existance had soem vague relevance. Arsenal were the better team, but liverpool where more disciplined and clinical. HAve to say torres has surpassed expectation. However with Rafa as manager, liverpool will never win the league.

hats of to gooners 2nite!

a brilliant game to watch.

Well i must say it's temping to ask 'now you believe in the myth...?':)

That's what an intimidating stadium (or KOP to be precise) can influenced any man on the pitch. make it to our favour or against our opponents.

It's hard to argue either the 'men in black' also influenced... but 0.05% intimidated soul can something swayed his decision in our favour (...and with that statement, Chelski fans will defo remind us of the 'ghost goal of 2005') :P

well good luck lad meeting MU... obviously i'm rooting for u guys!

p/s - between Spuds & Gooners... Men in Red all the time :P

Agree Hleb should have been awarded the penalty in the first leg and thought Babel's was a penalty also. Sure things would have been different if you guys came to Anfield with a 2-1 score...but really who knows? The reality is as good/talented you guys are in footballing terms, our boys have the character/heart/spirit and ultimately that is what wins tournaments like these. Be sure, Chelsea will have a horrid time trying to get through to the Final, but Grant knows that preety football doesn't get you there and so we will encounter a more resilient and disciplined outfit. I am confident we will get through purely because Gerrard, Torres have more to offer now given they were kept reasonably quiet tonight......good luck in the EPL, will be supporting hard for you guys to win it and hopefully you do the job at Old Trafford...Arsenal do play football like the Liverpool of the 70's and 80's and for this reason admire you greatly...your missing ingredient is character/spirit which you must have in abundance in Europe...Liverpool have proven it many times over...

Anonymous said...

It seems like we lack spirit and character...maybe so but we can play you off the field any day...at least we play football...

Anonymous said...

The scoreline was 4-2 (5-3 agg) and I think Liverpool are playing off a finals spot...so play off any team you like off the field but the reality is you guys did not have the metal to hold on to a 2-2 scoreline (equates to a win) and it took Liverpool 30 seconds to take the lead back...my view is that it shows character and spirit...Need one be reminded of Istanbul or the fact we were on our way out at the group stage with two consecutive defeats...I can go on!

As for the influence of the Kop in games like these, Arsenal players may not have been intimidated by them but I will guarantee you every Liverpool player wearing the red shirt on that ground was drawn to that goal in the last 6-7 minutes, the Kop is like a magnetic field...

Anonymous said...

... as i said, be it positive (ala magnet) to us or negative... in effect to our opponents :+

Anonymous said...

ohh... and someone mentioned Rafa made a pack with Champions League Devil (. .')

Hope next year is gonna be a different one...

And for all u Spuds out there FUCK OFF!

I was under the impression that in order to play good football you must also know how to DEFEND and not just attack 90 minutes and Arsenal just CANT defend.

4 games played against Liverpool this season , for all that so called superior football of Arsenals they failed to win ANY of those 4 games. So much for superior football.
*waits for all the arsenal "yea buts" to come*

Anonymous said...

Crem..

when Spurs won the Carling Cup we were told in no uncertain terms by gooners everywhere to come back at the end of the season when Arsenal are sitting pretty on top of the table and with the Champions League in the bag and then we'll compare trophy hauls...

so here we are.. anyone want a recount??

Wrighty i also agree with you that Liverpool fans are excellent.. the best in the world in my opinion..

for example when Barnsley beat them in the cup they stayed behing to applaud Barnsley off the field..

IT WAS A PENALTY? how is that. How can a clear cut penalty be so debatable? i am so confused by penalty decisisons as a i have seen players nearly decapitated and not get one but Toure brushed behind Babel and it is one? Wrighty7 ur humility is cool but how can u agree to it being the right call? if that was a penalty then Arsenal should have gotten two for the foul on hleb!

This is a bit hard to deal with as an Arsenal fan! Very unfair.

Then u have silly people saying Arsene has done all he can for Arsenal when u can clearly see that if the refs were on point recent matches would not have gone the way they have.

I hate our defence though!

We Will get there soon but will have to win by at leat two goals to make sure the refs cannot take it away!

God Bless!
