Big name or big talent? Is Wenger right or wrong?

Le Boss has never been the type to sign big names. Never has been, never will be.

Our guvnor is one stubborn Frenchman and I cannot for the life of me, see him ever changing the way that he add's to the squad.

He doesn't sign ready made shiny diamonds, he takes the rough ones and makes the rough diamonds shine.

And that will never change.

No matter how much we cry out for a superstar, Wenger will not hear our pleas.

He has our clubs future at heart and I thank him for that.

BUT, when a player like David Villa states that he wants to join your club then that is the time to break the habit of a life time.

Wenger has stated that it's not about the name, it's the talent. Well, there aren't many more talented out there than David Villa.

He has both. The name and the talent.

What could be a better way to please us and Wenger?

We get a big name, Le Boss get's his talent.

It's not all about how much money we spend.

I don't want to become like the Chavs and spend a fortune on shit like Shevchenko.

No

All I want is players like Villa to be signed because they will make Arsenal a better side.

I admit a big signing for big money gets the pulse racing, and believe me when Villa said he wanted to join Arsenal my pulse was racing!

But it aint about that. The big money gets you excited, but doesn't guarantee success.

So I agree with Wenger that big money signings isn't always the way.

BUT, sometimes to sign talent, like Wenger says we need, you have to spend BIG money on BIG names to get BIG talent.

Keep it Goonerish...........

sign SAMIR NASRI n BEN ARFA!!!!!!!! only £12m a-piece.

Wenger needs to sign people like Villa. It will help boost morale and show the world Arsenal means business.

Wenger is wrong.
Its time to change. Look at the success of United and Chelsea every year. They spend untold money and are always winning things.
Us? Four years without a trophy, something has got to change. Maybe Wenger?

Samir Nasri is overrated, and won't make the impact we need..

Good post.
I think a big name is always what we want but will it win things?
I dont know.

Not always, Cesc, Sagna, Clichy and Ade - small money, big talents

Wenger inherited Bergkamp the biggest and most talented name the club has had since the war.. He was the catlyst for the other signings that came to the club. One big signing now and we get stability in the squad and something to tempt the others that we may be chasing.

Note the "SOMETIMES" mate, I never said all the time.

What a big signing like Villa?

I couldn't agree more wrighty. It gets the pulses racing. That one capture of Villa would silence everyone. The media, the fans. It's really a no-brainer. Imagine the excitement on the first day knowing we have Villa in our starting line-up? Guranteed to make that back in shirt sales. Ahh I can't do it to myself. Wenger will not do buy him, as much as we wish he would.

Imagine it Royston,

And welcoming our new signing to the Emirates David Villlllllllla..........

if the club spends millions and does win sumthing then spends years in midtable mediocrity wat does that help.we dnt wana b the next leeds utd !the club shud do wat is sensible keep on buying the rough diamonds then shine them out until we have millions to spend which shouldnt be more than five years away. The club is relatively doing well considering what they achieved this year with a young team.the team should clinch it next year.drogba is chelsea and if drog leaves chelsea wont b good.ronaldo will be tired from 2consecutive good seasons ,a world cup and Euro08 he'll have to b a super human to score more than 30goals next season

It would be one of the greater days at Arsenal FC. It would bring so much happiness and pride to the supporters and I believe there would be an electricity in the air that we could accomplish anything that year.

Get REAL! We are not going to sign Villa or any other striker. We have Ade, Bendtner, Eduardo, Walcott, RVP and Vela who can play in attack. That is 6 and is probably already verging on too many. Wenger would be putting another player in front of Theo and Vela who are both potentially world class players. We need a big CB, another midfielder and I think a world class keeper (but this will never happen). I'm not bothered about names I just want players like Sagna who will do the job and don't come with massive egos.

Anonymous said...

What so because a player has an ego that means he wont do a job?

Henry, Wrighty, Pires, Lehamann?

Shall I go on?..........

If we sign two more players that are like Sagna, but at CB and CM, i'll be ecstatic. He wasn't a young one not ready for prime time, he stepped in and was the best RB in the EPL. Keeping looking for your gems, Arsene.

If Wenger delivers three more Sagnas/Eduardos then I'll be a happy bunny.

it will never happen whinger never had a big name signing so he woulnt be able to handle him also he wud not be able to cope with a star studied bench like manu an chelsea, hes got no balls. enojy the unknown talant he buys.

two problems...

* is david villa really a talent that would make it in the EPL?

* wenger didn't say he wouldn;t sign big names, he just emphaised big talent; however, big talent and big name would be too expensive for wenger to afford

Wenger must know that sometimes big signings bring big talents. Big signings like Rio Ferdinand, Rooney (Arsenal killer), Essien (Arsenal killer), Drogba ( another Arsenal killer) are worth the money we spent

FOR the third richest club to sign big talents as opposed to big name is sending the wrong message.According to one article Arsenal were not willing to spend big in the 70s and 80s whereas Liverpool were willing to do so.I know clubs which spent big have won nothing with Newcastle under KK a good example in the 90s.
This unwillingness to spend on big names could be Arsenal are strapped for cash or Aw is unwilling to gamble on big names.
The problem is the big name is the finished article whereas the big talent has to prove himself and many big names have fallen by the wayside. Suffice to say there are too many to give a list.

With some alterations to Yaya's game he can replace Flamini, but why stop there? With talk of replacing at Arsenal I often wonder how Arsene could have fallen in love with Cesc. Now, while Cesc is a quality player, he never replaced Vieira. Vieira was not only a creator, but a ball-winner, enforcer, leader, bulwark, who could also score regularly. Cesc could never be expected to fill that role nearly as well, esp given his age and build. Yes, the young experiment has produced quality football, but there is no escaping the fact that once the pires, bergkamp, vieira seasoned warriors left the team, arsenal became second best. In the post-Vieira era Arsenal can no longer dominate, boss the pitch or hold up play. It's time Wenger admits as much and revamps the squad.

Yaya is just the beginning of what's needed to build a winner. Thankfully Wenger didn’t go for Luka, who is quality, but another three foot tall midfielder is not needed. (The secret’s out – teams know how to defend against Arsenal – insufficient wide-play. Eight defenders on the top of the box and Arsenal still try to dribble it in. You don’t see Manu doing that stupid stuff and they have not one intelligent player. Ferguson’s solution is simple- when they don’t play the ball wide to broaden the defense and create more openings not to mention more crosses, he takes the player out behind the shed til there’s blood in his stool.) (Wenger, in true development style, Eboue, Walcott, Rvp, Ben Alfalfa Jr. et all better be practicing their crosses all summer long).

Wenger, time to stop coddling the kids and give them some proper role models- Barry, Villa, Richards, etc. The current team is too young and short of real leadership on the field. Gallas you’re a man, check, but it can’t hurt to have an adult or two on the pitch.

Any self-respecting world class club with a player hinting unhappiness ala Hleb is immediately shown the door, albeit in the nicest most profitable way possible. This scenario also underscores the subtle but oh so real attraction of a winning side. Witness Gerrard. There is no manager more capable than Wenger of producing beautiful fluent football, but winning is important as well. Three trophyless seasons on the trot takes it's toll. Witness Barca - two empty seasons and off you go, now I favor stability a bit more than that but a certain amount of ruthlessness can sharpen and focus young minds.

Though improved, it's difficult to see the current squad as champions given what they are up against - deeper, more mature sides with proven winners as well as great young talent. Another five young gunners can go on loan again as we bring in experience. A page from Ferguson's book needs inserting: no one understands the requirements to be successful in the premier league better than alex. Power as well as speed, strength as well as skill, youth as well as age, size as well as squirts, add to that durability and depth, with utter devotion to the squad mentality and yet accommodating a quirk here and there. It is also the mark of a superior manager to admit mistakes and move to correct them(best privately and expeditiously).

No one aspect of Arsenal this season was really scintillating, are they worth keeping around for so long to only entertain but not win? ManU, Chelsea, Liverpool are not slowing down for anyone. Although I have to laugh at those silly Liverpool directors, turned down Dubai Int’l Cap for tweedle dolt and tweedle jackass.

Arsene, with all due prudence of course, bring in the power that brings credibility, respect within the club and without and wins. Arsene, build anew, not names but players(how old was Bergkamp when you bought him, Pires?). Also, a strict wage structure cannot exist in isolation, but it can certainly implode. What was Flamini paid 20k/wk? Those are 90’s prices. I can just see Flamini looking down at Eduardo’s erstwhile ankle and think “I’m bustin’ my ass and risking this kind of injury in this physical league for 20k/wk and my teammates are pulling in what?!” Arsene, you effectively asked Flamini to go. After dumping Kaka on his arse and chopping up Milan with razor precision, Flamini was a goner. This is the massive and little discussed downside of developing vs buying and paying fairly. The question remains, which is preferred developing or winning? Only 25 million for transfers, doesn’t make sense. If Kroenke and Usmanov are billionaire Arsenal supporters, time to prove it. No one is bigger than the club.

Wenger deserves what he has sown. He didn't sign Flam last summer and then let Diarrhea sign mid-year: idiot.

Happy that Flam will only play in the UEFA Cup next year, however! LOL.

Lorik Cana would be my choice over Appiah or Barry.

Would Wenger break the bank to sign Kaka if Helato left? Nah.

Nasri and B-A are o.k., but only Robinho is a sure goal-maker: only Ronaldo and Ribery are better.

Why the f**k loan out Traore and Song on loan, idiot? We need coverage.

Would like to see Thuram in the squad and back up for Richards (if Eriksson actually leaves).

I'm sick of seeing Drogba or other big striker score on us.

Most English players are rubbish and overvalued these days, excluding some of the youngsters Walcott, Lennon, Bale, Huddlestone.

My 2 pence.

Anonymous said...

Lol out of that list Walcott is good

Bale is welsh

and lennon and cuddlestone are poor

also, djorou can do the holding job in midfield - not as dynamic as flamini has a better reading of the game

as for wenger and the big signings, he had his fingers burnt with reyes didn't he

but you look at fergie and you have to admire him, backed up his squad this season with Nani, Hargreaves and Anderson and got rewarded with the PL and maybe the CL

a player like Villa can be the difference for a side

cuntchops

Most definately big talent...on the whole wenger is correct as you can see through his previous signings like sagna. Very unknown but a world class talent. I do think we should sign at least 1 high profile player to boost morale and create atmosphere.
